GST dept crackdown on tax evasion in CG: Traders protest ‘undue actions' with ‘bandh'
1 2 3 Raipur: The State GST department in Ambikapur has taken action against businesses suspected of large-scale tax evasion. However, traders have alleged that the GST department is harassing small business owners and engaging in illegal recovery by issuing inflated tax demands. On bigger businesses, investigations were recently carried out at the premises of M/s Bansal Trading Corporation and M/s Laxmi Traders. M/s Bansal Trading Corporation was given a risk score of 10 on the GST portal, indicating a high likelihood of tax evasion. During the inspection, officials found no business-related ledgers or accounting software, such as Tally, at the premises, further reinforcing suspicions. From 2017-18 to 2024-25, the firm reported a turnover of over Rs 158 crore but paid zero cash tax. Scrutiny of e-way bills for 2023-24 revealed purchases worth Rs 29.50 crore but reported supplies of only Rs 50 lakh. Officials suspect the firm sold goods directly to consumers while generating fake invoices for other businesses to enable fraudulent input tax credit (ITC) claims. This practice is believed to have caused significant revenue losses to both the Centre and the state. During the probe, the proprietor of Bansal Trading Corporation admitted to irregularities and voluntarily offered to pay Rs 40 lakh in taxes. However, GST officials have demanded the submission of ledgers and supporting documents, which the business has yet to provide. In a separate investigation, the department inspected M/s Laxmi Traders on May 30 and 31, 2025. The firm had a total turnover of over Rs 96 crore from 2017-18 to 2024-25, with negligible cash tax payments. For 2023-24, it reported purchases worth Rs 11 crore but only Rs 7 crore in supplies. The proprietor acknowledged discrepancies and voluntarily paid Rs 17.55 lakh in taxes. This was the first action taken by the GST department against the firm. Meanwhile, traders' associations across Ambikapur observed a complete shutdown on Sunday to protest against the action of the GST department. The call for a 'bandh' by the traders' body saw widespread compliance, with most shops remaining shut and business activities halted. Protesting 'undue' actions, traders held a rally through the city. During the rally, they chanted slogans against the GST officials. They clarified that while they do not object to departmental action, it must be fair and proper. The association highlighted cases where traders with an annual turnover of less than Rs 50 lakh have been issued tax demands of up to Rs 1 crore. They urged the govt to address the situation with sensitivity instead of strictness. The Ambikapur traders' association submitted a memorandum to the tehsildar, addressed to the CM.

Derry and Galway share spoils in Celtic Park thriller
Conor Doherty's last minute point means Derry and Galway lived to fight another day after a thrilling 2-20 to 4-14 All Ireland Series Group 4 encounter at a rainswept Celtic Park. Matthew Tierney's 69th minute goal - Galway's fourth of an absorbing game - looked to have completed a magnificent comeback from Padraic Joyce's team who trailed by six points in the opening half and seven after the break. The draw leaves both counties on one point ahead of the a final round of fixtures that see Derry meet Dublin and Galway take on All Ireland champions Armagh, both on neutral territory. From the team named midweek, Tally made two changes Dan Higgins and Niall Loughlin brought in to replace Anton Tohill and Ruairi Forbes, while Padraic Joyce brought Damien Comer back for a place on the bench and started with Sam O'Neill in place of Cein Darcy, a changed that was reversed within 18 minutes of throw-in as Derry forged into a six point lead. And with so much on the line, it was proper championship fare with big hits on and off the ball five players saw yellow before the break. Backed by the breeze, Derry recovered from O'Neill's early score to lead through a superb Brenda Rogers two pointer four minutes in only for Paul Conroy to cancelled the lead out within seconds. Shane McGuigan and Conor Glass handed Derry a two point lead before two goals in 60 seconds lit the touch paper of a half that was always simmering close to boiling point. First an O'Neill shot came off the Derry post for Roberty Finnerty to punch the rebound home via the inside of the Celtic Park upright but any Galway euphoria the visitors felt was short lived. From the resultant restart, a superb surging run from Diarmuid Baker punch a hole straight through the Tribesmen's defence and drew the Galway cover. Baker fed the ball left to Loughlin who managed to move it on just in time for Glass to punch to the net for 1-04 to 1-02 with 13 minutes on the clock. That goal was the cue for Derry best passage of the half as Paul Cassidy tagged on a lovely two pointer before McGuigan did likewise from a free to move the Oak Leafers six clear. With Darcy now on, Galway stemmed the ide through a Finnerty score but it was Walsh's goal, after turning away brilliantly form Eoin McEvoy, that brought the Tribe right back into the game, Walsh showing al his class with classy low finish into the far corner. Further points from Finnerty and Matthew Thompson tied up proceedings but a late Derry rally, with points from McGuigan (f), Ciaran McFaul and Loughlin, handed Tally men a slender two point half-time advantage at 1-11 to 2-06. A point apiece from Conroy and Niall Toner on the restart maintained Derry's two point lead but it could have been even better when Rogers' hand pass put Paul Cassidy through the middle. Cassidy shot was true and destined for the top corner but Connor Gleeson's save was even better, diving full stretch to turn the ball away for a '45 which Conor Glass sent between the posts for 1-14 to 2-07. Another Glass point had Derry's lead out to five but better was to follow in the 49th as McGuigan sent substitute Lachlan Murray away on a great run along the left, Murray getting his head up just in time to pick out Niall Loughlin who punched the pass into the back of the Galway net for 2-15 to 2-07. Galway response was the introduce Damien Comer and Peter Cooke for Conroy and McDaid with Cooke grabbing the Tribesmen's first score for 11 minutes within seconds of his arrival with an excellent two point effort. That score was the catalyst for three further Galway scores from Sean Kelly, Walsh and Finnerty which brought Galway back within five. A Lachlan Murray score halted the Galway drive but only but only temporarily as as a controversial sideline call sent Galway down the right with the being squared for Tierney to blast to the net for 2-18 to 3-12. Cue chaos as Galway threw the kitchen sink at Derry who were hanging on and still in front with one minute left when disaster struck. Kieran Molloy's shot was meant for a point but it dropped short and Derry panicked, Matthew Tierney the beneficiary of the breaking ball for a fourth Galway goal that put them one up and looked to have won it. However Derry secured possession on their final kickout and worked a score, Conor Doherty firing over an equaliser as both teams lived to fight another day. Derry: Ben McKinless, Diarmuid Baker, Eoin McEvoy, Patrick McGurk, Conor Doherty (0-01), Padraig McGrogan, Dan Higgins, Conor Glass (1-03, 1 '45), Brendan Rogers (0-03, 1tp), Ethan Doherty, Paul Cassidy (0-03, 1tp), Ciaran McFaul (0-01), Shane McGuigan (0-04, 1tpf, 1f), Niall Loughlin (1-02), Niall Toner (0-01, 1f). There are robots working in SuperValu (and they're coming to a supermarket near you)
Tally the robot in Supervalu in Rathborne, Dublin 15. ROBOT WORKERS ARE gliding around the aisles of two branches of SuperValu, and will soon be arriving in more stores. The Irish supermarket chain's Tally robots are able to check shelves are full and that prices are correct, and can even order additional stock if a product has run out. Staff in the Swords Pavilions and Rathborne, Dublin 15 branches of SuperValu, where the robots are being trialled, are worried. Mandate trade union and its shop stewards have raised workers' concerns about the longer term implications of the robots with the company. The Journal / YouTube How do the robots work? SuperValu told The Journal the robots travel around the store three times a day to identify what's missing from the shelves. They do this using cameras and by performing AI analysis of images. Any images of people in the background are automatically blurred out for GDPR reasons. If a product is in the back storeroom, Tally alerts human workers that it's time to re-stock. If a product is out of stock, the robot orders more. Customers at Rathborne SuperValu seemed to be already well used to shopping alongside a robot when The Journal visited in recent days. Shoppers paid little attention to Tally's blinking lights as it silently glided down the bread aisle. Certainly no-one in the supermarket, except The Journal's reporter, was following the robot around, agog, taking photos and videos. Luckily, the robot is very nimble when it comes to gliding around any obstacles in its way, such as gawping journalists. SuperValu confirmed that robots are 'programmed to navigate around obstacles and stop immediately if there is a person in close proximity'. The devices have been fitted with heavy bases so they won't tip over. Advertisement Tally is watching you (so it doesn't bang into you). Valerie Flynn / The Journal Valerie Flynn / The Journal / The Journal Worker concerns Keith Pollard of Mandate said the trade union has received assurances from SuperValu that the robots are not a replacement for workers. The company's promises included that there will not be a reduction in headcount or working hours at the two stores where the Tally system is being trialled. 'Not surprisingly – despite the company's strong assurances – our members in both stores were obviously worried about the introduction of Tally and its longer-term implications,' Pollard said. 'We're determined to protect the terms and conditions of our members in SuperValu so we'll be keenly observing the outcome of the Tally trial and where it goes to next,' he added. Barry Minnock, who is in charge of data, AI and emerging technology at Musgrave, SuperValu's parent company, said workers' roles 'are not and will not be impacted'. 'The reason we are investing in Tally is to further enhance on-shelf availability and service to our customers, complementing the fantastic work of our staff,' Minnock said. Recent decades have seen a trend towards supermarkets reducing the number of staff needed, including through the introduction self-service checkouts and with the replacement of fish and butchers' counters with pre-packaged products. Fashion and homeware retailers have recently followed suit with the introduction of self-service tills. The introduction of coin slots in trolleys – nudging customers to return their own trolley – reduced the need for supermarket car park trolley collectors, while it is many years since any Irish supermarkets paid staff to pack customers' bags at the tills. It's been reported in the UK that electronic shelf labels could be one of the next innovations to reduce supermarket staff costs. British supermarket chain Morrisons is also trialling Tally, the first UK supermarket to do so, trade magazine The Grocer reported last month. Time magazine named Tally 3.0, from Californian company Simbe Robotics, one of the top 200 innovations of 2023. Further roll-out Minnock said the trial which got underway in two SuperValu stores in October has been 'very successful' at keeping shelves stocked. The trial is now in its second phase, which has more fully integrated the robots into other systems and processes within the supermarkets. 'Subject to trial results, we will roll out to further SuperValu stores,' Minnock said. However, the robots are not suitable for stores with tight aisles, Minnock added. That may mean robots are unlikely to be coming to Centra – also owned by Musgrave – any time soon. Readers like you are keeping these stories free for everyone...
