Food hub planned near Palanganatham bridge, to house street vendors
Madurai: In an effort to streamline traffic along the busy Bypass Road and provide an organised space for street vendors, Madurai corporation is planning to set up a dedicated food hub in the space near Palanganatham bridge. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The civic body has sought approval from Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB) to utilise a vacant plot near the bridge on rent for the purpose. The initiative comes in the wake of a recent eviction drive by state highways department and the corporation, which cleared around 200 street food vendors operating along the stretch between Palanganatham and Arapalayam, citing obstruction to vehicular movement. The vendors appealed for an alternative space to continue their businesses, at the corporation council meeting in June. A senior corporation official confirmed that a formal request was sent to TNHB. "We identified vacant land near the bridge and proposed its use to establish a food hub. If approved, this site will be developed on the lines of the food street near Kathipara Junction in Chennai," he said. The official added that work on another food street proposed near Mattuthavani bus stand is also expected to begin shortly, as announced in the 2025–26 corporation budget. The city's existing food street near Vandiyur Teppakulam, developed on land belonging to Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR & CE) department, has gained popularity in recent years and draws large crowds, especially during weekends and festivals. Officials believe that the upcoming projects will add to the city's recreational infrastructure and enhance its reputation as a culinary destination. Ward 62 councillor K Jeyachandran, however, voiced concerns over the relocation plan. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "Before the eviction, street food vendors were doing well along Bypass Road. Instead of shifting them far from their customer base, the corporation should consider allowing them to operate on service roads along the bypass. The civic body can regulate operations and collect rent," he said. Local food entrepreneurs and bloggers welcomed the move but stressed the need for proper planning and maintenance. "Madurai has long deserved a dedicated food hub. If implemented properly, it could be as impactful as Indore's Chappan Dukan, which has become a landmark for street food lovers," said Athideera Pandian, founder of 'Foodies Day Out', who organises culinary walks for tourists. He added that hygiene standards and 24x7 operation, as seen in Indore, could be replicated in Madurai, which already enjoys a vibrant night economy. Food blogger S Balaji suggested that the area around Vandiyur Teppakulam temple tank could also be developed further, as many vendors already operate there.

Land ‘non-residential'; patta denied for TNHB residents for 30 years in TN
THOOTHUKUDI: The residents of the Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB) settlement, located along the Ettayapuram Road, have been living without pattas for over three decades, encountering challenges in execution of sale deeds, settlement documents, obtaining mortgages, and the like. The 29.48-acre land parcel, acquired by the TNHB in 1987 from the Sankaraperi panchayat, still has not been reclassified for residential use. According to sources, the land acquired to develop a residential township was divided into 1,055 plots in 1992, and disbursed to the public for different economic categories through a lot system. However, the residents were not provided patta, and the land is still classified as "government land" on the state website. The land had been used as a dumpyard by the Thoothukudi municipality before it was acquired by the TNHB, and it was not reclassified after for processing patta, said an official. Speaking to TNIE, Thoothukudi corporation ward 3 councillor R Rengasamy, who is also a member of the TNHB People's Welfare Association, claimed they have petitioned the higher officials of TNHB, revenue, and corporation, all of whom had given contradictory statements and avoided accountability. Democratic Youth Front of India (DYFI) district town secretary M S Muthu said the district administration must take steps to issue patta for the 1,055 residents by reclassifying the land parcel. A senior official from the TNHB (Tirunelveli division) said that steps are being taken to reclassify the land as per the request of the residents. These plots were developed, based on a government order, under the Tamil Nadu Urban Development Programme (TNUDP), which has been terminated. "We are collecting land records of the housing board to obtain patta for the TNHB residential area," he said.

TNHB must bear additional 5% GST cost, can't ask flat buyers to foot bill, rules Madras HC
CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has ruled that the Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB) is not entitled to collect additional GST from flat purchasers after collecting the full flat cost, which is inclusive of the GST amount, as per the advertisements released during the time of entering into the agreement. The ruling was given by Justice D Bharatha Chakravarthy while allowing a batch of petitions challenging the notices issued to purchasers by the TNHB in 2024, forcing them to pay an additional GST of 5% of the total sale price of the flats. He ordered the board to execute the sale deed in favour of the petitioners who have paid the full cost calculated as per the advertisement rate and refund the additional 5% to those who have already paid that within eight weeks. The purchasers who moved the court are those who bought 102 High Income Group (HIG) flats in Nandanam division of TNHB and 72 such flats in Anna Nagar division. They contended that in 2021, the rate was fixed at Rs 9,892 per square foot inclusive of GST in Nandanam and Rs 10,500 per square foot in Anna Nagar as per the advertisements and display boards in the site, but they were later forced to pay the additional GST before executing the sale deed. TNHB's counsel submitted that the cost per square foot included the 12% GST when contracts for construction were awarded and therefore, the advertisement reflected it.
