Kuskop to build more Tamu Desa premises in Sabah, Sarawak

Published on: Monday, June 02, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 02, 2025 Text Size: KOTA BELUD: The Entrepreneur and Cooperative Development Ministry (Kuskop) will build more Tamu Desa (rural market) premises in Sabah and Sarawak this year under a RM20 million allocation to empower rural traders and boost infrastructure. Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick ( pic ) said the allocation includes an additional RM10 million announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the Madani Rakyat programme in Tawau last month. He said the government successfully built or upgraded 98 Tamu Desa premises across the two states last year and hopes to match or exceed that number this year with the new funding. Ewon noted that 14 of the completed Tamu Desa facilities were in Kota Belud and highlighted their impact on small-scale traders, especially women, by providing comfortable trading spaces that double as venues for community activities. As of May this year, requests to build or upgrade such premises in Sabah alone total RM40 million, and Ewon said the initiative will continue into the 13th Malaysia Plan as part of the government's commitment to rural development and inclusive growth. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Sabah, Sarawak to have more Tamu Desa

Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (KUSKOP) Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick said his ninistry plans to build more Tamu Desa premises in Sabah and Sarawak this year, as part of efforts to improve facilities for rural market stalls and to empower Tamu entrepreneurs. Ewon said that the MADANI Government, through his ministry, has allocated RM20 million to implement the Tamu Desa Premises Development Project this year. He added that this includes an additional RM10 million allocation announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the MADANI Rakyat Programme (PMR) in Tawau last month. 'Last year, we successfully built and upgraded 98 Tamu Desa premises throughout Sabah and Sarawak. This year, with an allocation of RM20 million, I hope we can construct the same number or even more,' he said to reporters after officiating the Kaamatan Festival at Kampung Pinasang Tamu Darat and launching the Tamu Desa premises at Tamu Darat, here Monday. The Tamu Desa premises in the village, which cost RM250,000, began construction at the end of last year and will be completed this year. For the first time, the government, through KUSKOP, introduced the Tamu Desa Premises Development Project in 2024, with an allocation of RM20 million in the 2024 Budget to implement Tamu Desa premises across Sabah and Sarawak. Ewon said that out of the 98 Tamu Desa premises completed throughout Sabah and Sarawak last year, 14 were built in the Kota Belud area. 'I was informed by village leaders that these premises have brought great benefits to the local community, especially to mothers and small entrepreneurs who trade weekly. 'It not only provides a more comfortable space for trading but can also be used for various community activities on other days,' he said. He added that the requirements for developing Tamu Desa premises vary depending on the location and the scope of work determined by the District Office, whether it involves new construction or upgrading. 'The cost of upgrades ranges from RM100,000 to as much as RM300,000. Therefore, the ministry will allocate funds based on the value and needs submitted by each respective district office,' he said. Ewon mentioned that as of May 2025, applications for new construction and upgrades of Tamu Desa premises in Sabah alone have reached RM40 million, including pending applications carried over from last year that have yet to be implemented. 'This total does not yet include applications from Sarawak. Although our budget is limited, what is important is the continuity of what we have implemented last year. 'What we started last year will be continued and expanded this year. I am confident this programme will become one of the ministry's key contributions to the 13th Malaysia Plan (2026–2030),' he said. Ewon added that the Tamu Desa initiative is part of the government's commitment to paying special attention to rural needs in Sabah and Sarawak, in line with the country's inclusive development agenda and the Look East Policy.

PMR 2025 boosts local entrepreneurs, strengthens Sabah's Eeconomy – Hajiji

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor receives a mock cheque for the completed Tamu Desa premises project in Sabah from Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick, witnessed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Anwar Ibrahim during the closing ceremony of the Madani Rakyat 2025 Sabah Programme at the Tawau Municipal Council Square on Sunday. TAWAU (May 11): Efforts to bring the Madani government's development programmes, such as the Program Madani Rakyat (PMR), to the district level provide valuable opportunities for local entrepreneurs to access information on government-led entrepreneurship initiatives, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor. He noted that such initiatives indirectly help promote local products to a wider audience, which in turn stimulates economic growth and the development of the domestic tourism sector. 'This effort also serves as a way to connect more closely with the people, ensuring that the promotion of Madani government programmes is not limited to specific areas only,' he said during the Program Madani Rakyat (PMR) 2025: Sabah held at the Tawau Municipal Council Square on Sunday. 'This is proof that the Madani government never neglects its responsibilities to the people, no matter where they are,' Hajiji added. The closing ceremony was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Anwar Ibrahim. Hajiji expressed hope that the Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (KUSKOP) would continue to support and strengthen entrepreneurial development, particularly in Sabah. 'Entrepreneurship initiatives designed specifically for Sabah such as the Tamu Desa Premises Project, digitisation efforts through TEKUN TikTok Shop, financing up to RM800 million, and the establishment of the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) Hub by SME Corporation Malaysia have had a positive impact on over 50,000 micro, small and medium entrepreneurs in the state,' he said. He also highlighted that the ehsan@KUSKOP initiative has the potential to eradicate hardcore poverty through a targeted intervention approach involving mentorship, training, capital and comprehensive monitoring. 'The approach introduced by KUSKOP has added strategic value to the local entrepreneurship landscape. Therefore, I hope the ehsan@KUSKOP programme can be further expanded to other districts and rural areas across Sabah,' said the Chief Minister. He also called for greater accessibility to banking services, particularly from agencies under KUSKOP. 'I hope institutions like Bank Rakyat will consider opening more branches or, at the very least, installing Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) in rural areas to serve the public, especially local entrepreneurs,' he added. Hajiji noted that at the state level, several programmes have been introduced to support youth entrepreneurship, including the Youth Entrepreneurs Excellence Scheme (SYABAS) under the Sabah Ministry of Youth and Sports. 'Under the Ministry of Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship, there are also several programmes focused on youth entrepreneurship development, such as the Graduate Entrepreneur Scheme Workshop (BUSS) and the Technical Entrepreneur Scheme Workshop (BEST), which target university graduates and vocational or skills institute graduates, respectively. 'The State Government, through Yayasan Usaha Maju (YUM), an agency established in 1995, continues to support small business owners by offering micro-loans to target groups, including women entrepreneurs, who need capital to grow their businesses,' he said. Hajiji emphasised that the progress of the entrepreneurial sector is closely tied to the overall performance of the state and national economy. 'Since the end of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2021, Sabah's economy, which had previously slumped, has shown positive development, with the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) rising from RM82.1 billion in 2022 to RM83.2 billion in 2023. 'It is projected that Sabah's GDP for 2024 will reach RM84.9 billion. This clearly reflects the capability and commitment of the State Government not only in revitalising the economy but also in elevating Sabah's economic performance to its highest level,' he said. He added that the government remains committed to accelerating efforts to eradicate hardcore poverty in Sabah, where significant reductions in poverty and hardcore poverty rates have already been achieved. 'This success is the result of close cooperation between the Federal Government and the State Government, through the implementation of several initiatives such as Rumah Mesra SMJ, Sentuhan Kasih Rakyat Sabah, and the State Government's policy of prioritising the employment of heads of households who are classified as poor or hardcore poor by state government agencies and selected government-linked companies,' he said. In this regard, the Chief Minister stated that the strong relationship already established between the State Government and the Federal Government will continue to be strengthened. 'We are optimistic that the cooperation and close ties between both governments, state and federal, are the key to our shared success in achieving the goals of a Madani society: one that is progressive, knowledgeable, has integrity, and lives in prosperity and harmony,' he said.

Tamu Desa strategic for local entrepreneurs amid Sogip boom

Published on: Tuesday, April 22, 2025 Published on: Tue, Apr 22, 2025 Text Size: Ewon officiating the Tamu Desa Kampung Pelakat. Yusof is third from right. SIPITANG: Sindumin Assemblyman Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob has reaffirmed his commitment to grassroots economic development through the establishment of the Tamu Desa Kampung Pelakat, which he initiated as a strategic platform for local entrepreneurs to tap into rising market demand in Sipitang. 'This is more than just a weekly market—it's a game-changer for Sipitang,' said Dr Yusof during the launch and Hari Raya celebration. 'With the Sipitang Oil and Gas Industrial Park bringing in six major factories this year, the influx of 10,000 workers and their families—estimated at 25,000 people—will create unprecedented demand for local goods and services.' Yusof, who is also Chairman of Qhazanah Sabah Berhad, highlighted that existing employers in Sogip, including Petrochemical Fertiliser and upcoming players like ZLNG, Petroventure, Gibson, and Esteel—with a total projected investment exceeding RM30 billion—represent a significant opportunity for local economic spill over. 'We are already seeing a rise in the sale of home-grown products like seafood crackers, chips, and fruits. This is the right time for our entrepreneurs to scale up,' he said. Tamu Desa Kampung Pelakat adds to a growing network of community markets in the district, following those in Pekan Sipitang (Thursday), Mesapol (Friday), and Sindumin (Saturday), reinforcing Yusof's broader vision of creating inclusive economic corridors across rural Sabah. Looking ahead, he has proposed the opening of another Tamu Desa at Kampung Mendulong, a strategic junction between Jalan Tenom and Meligan/Mendulong, to expand access for more rural entrepreneurs. Launched by Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick, the Tamu Desa Kampung Pelakat is poised to serve as a vital entrepreneurship hub, offering local farmers and fishermen a dedicated space to market their agricultural and marine products every Sunday. Ewon announced that savings from the Tamu Desa 2024 initiative would be used to upgrade existing village markets, aligning with suggestions made by local leaders like Yusof. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
