HC directs Tangedco to pay relief for electrocution deaths of man, son

Madurai: Madras high court has directed Tangedco authorities to pay a compensation of Rs10 lakh to a woman whose husband and son died after coming into contact with a live electric wire during Cyclone Gaja in Kodaikanal, Dindigul district. The court was hearing the petition filed by Subulakshmi, a resident of Pethuparai village in Kodaikanal. The petitioner stated that her husband, Ravi, and her son, Raja Pandi, were agricultural labourers. On Dec 2, 2018, in the morning, when Pandi was drying his wet cloth on a clothesline in front of the house, a live electric wire came in contact with the clothesline. Pandi was electrocuted. When Ravi went to save Pandi, he also suffered electrocution and died. The petitioner stated that due to Cyclone Gaja, there was no electricity supply for over 10 days. Without checking whether the lines were safe and proper, Tangedco authorities restored the connection, which resulted in the death of her husband and son. Earlier, she filed a petition in 2019 seeking compensation. The state govt released an ex gratia of Rs2 lakh in 2021. Recording the same, the court closed the case. Stating that the incident happened due to the negligence of Tangedco, the petitioner filed the present petition in 2022. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like IITD Online Programme in AI IITD TAILP Apply Now Undo Justice V Lakshminarayanan observed that Tangedco has evolved a scheme for payment of compensation to the survivors of electrocution victims. Madras HC slams Tangedco for delay in acting against graft-accused staff

MADURAI: The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court has directed the Tangedco chief engineer (personnel) to take timely disciplinary action against employees who are facing corruption charges, by using attested photo copies of supporting documents needed for the process. Justice B Pugalendhi gave the direction recently after finding that there is huge delay in launching the disciplinary proceedings as Tangedco keeps waiting for the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) officials to share the materials collected by them. The judge directed the chief engineer to issue a circular in this regard. The judge passed the order while dismissing the petition filed by an accounts supervisor in Tangedco who was suspended for demanding Rs 5,000 bribe from a line inspector for dropping disciplinary action in 2011. The petitioner had challenged his charge memo on the ground that it was issued after a delay of 10 years. While explaining the delay, the chief engineer informed the court that they were unable to proceed since the supporting documents required for the proceedings were with the DVAC, which retained the documents for criminal prosecution. The officer also informed the court that out of 231 Tangedco employees who were facing graft charges, disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against only 101 employees, owing to the above reason. Calling it a 'lame excuse', the judge opined that this directly helped the accused officials. He further pointed out that the government had issued a G.O. in 2004 that when the original records are with courts, there is no bar to use attested photocopies of documents for disciplinary proceedings to take a final decision without awaiting the outcome of criminal cases. Further, the judge directed the trial court to conclude the proceedings preferably within six months.

Mangroves strike roots in B Canal

Chennai: A once-polluted stretch of the Buckingham Canal at Kazhipattur has now turned into a thriving mangrove forest under the Green Tamil Nadu Mission. Spanning nearly 250m, the state forest department planted 12,500 mangrove saplings from five different species last year. These saplings have now matured into a lush green cover. Environment department secretary Supriya Sahu said that to support the saplings and improve water flow, they used the 'fishbone' technique — creating seven main structures with 87 channels and 80 distribution canals. "The sewage outflow was plugged years ago, and volunteers were roped in to monitor the growth of saplings. They, along with officials, took care of the saplings and recorded their growth," she said. She added that the mangroves will act as a buffer in the coastal areas, particularly near the Muttukkadu region, and prevent flooding during the rising of sea levels. The initiative was led by Chennai forest officer V A Saravanan and his team. Officials said the mangroves also help capture carbon, support biodiversity, and prevent land degradation. Some types of mangroves planted include avicennia marina, which is the most abundant species, followed by rhizophora apiculata, rhizophora mucronata, bruguiera cylindrica, and aegiceras corniculatum. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like What Is The Dental Implant In 2025 (Check) Dental Implant | Search Ads Search Now Undo Sahu said they mapped the state's coastal mangrove cover through the National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management. "We have identified potential areas where fresh planting is required, including Cuddalore and Ennore," she said, adding that at Ennore 1.6 lakh mangrove saplings will be planted along the Kosasthalaiyar Estuary and surrounding areas. She added that a mangrove protection community will be created to monitor this. The city saw among the lowest plantation efforts — just 18 hectares over the past 10 years. Fishermen from Ennore said mangrove success in the estuary will only be possible if the release of coolant water from thermal plants is stopped. "The Ennore estuary is polluted with chemicals released by industries while the Tangedco plant is releasing its coolant water. The water cannot sustain any form of life. TNPCB must rein in all the industries," said M Raja, a fishermen community leader from Kattukuppam.

Fertilisers are sufficiently stocked in Sivaganga; farmers need not be apprehensive, say officials

There was sufficient stock of urea and other fertilisers in the district and there was no need for any apprehension, farmers' were informed here on Thursday. Sivaganga District Collector Asha Ajith presided over the farmers' grievance meeting. When farmers' raised a query that there was not sufficient fertiliser, especially, urea and potash in select blocks, Joint Registrar (Cooperatives) Rajendra Prasad said that there was enough stock in hand. There was no need to panic. The district had at least 100 metric tons of urea. He said that all the outlets selling fertilisers have been instructed to display the stock position, price and other information in the boards. He also assured to take swift action against erring outlets and informed the farmers about the measures taken by the district administration. Some of the farmers' wanted the agriculture department officials to remove the thorny bushes (karuvelam trees) which posed a big challenge to the growth of various crops, the Collector explained the steps taken block wise across the district. A farmer Manalmedu Raja said that the officials should have a monitoring mechanism in Poovanthi, where a large number of North Indians and other people worked in the granite polishing units. Though the government was sympathetic with farmers' who lost their crops to destruction by the wild animals, the Tangedco officials refused permission to install solar fences, the members complained with the Collector. As a result, the issue remained unsolved and farmers' were at the receiving end all through the year, they said and urged the officials to permit them to put up solar fence.

1,055 users fined Rs 3 crore for misusing domestic power connection in Dindigul

DINDIGUL: A sum of Rs 3.49 crore has been collected as fine from 1,055 consumers in Dindigul in the past two years for diverting domestic power connections to commercial purposes (February 2022- March 2025), Tangedco stated in a reply to TNIE's RTI query filed last month. A top official from TANGEDCO (Dindigul) said,"The misuse of power connections is defined as Misuse of power tariff. This is an offence and causes huge financial loss to TANGEDCO. Most of these connections are detected by assessors during bimonthly visits and field officers during their inspections. After high consumption within a short duration triggered suspicion, a vigilance team held inspection and found misuse of power connections for commercial purposes. The charges have been recovered from consumers as fine." CITU-TANGEDCO Employees union (Dindigul) honorary president M Umapathy said,"Misuse of tariff is rampant in Sirumalai, Athoor, and Batlagundu, where houses have been converted into homestays and hotels. In Dindigul city, many were used for cooking activities under Food Business Operators (FBO). In Kodaikanal, most houses have been converted into resorts and hotels. After inspections, these fines were levied. Besides, load consumption can be easily detected in digital meters. The fines are levied based on the six-month power consumption and other factors."
