Dorian Thompson-Robinson aiming far beyond the Eagles practice squad
We all thought we had it figured out, but this is one of the reasons why we love the Philadelphia Eagles and team sports. The unpredictable nature of both is why we keep tuning in. Some things we know. Jerry Jones will self-sabotage. The New York Giants are a mess. The Cleveland Browns can't do anything with any competency. But that brings us back to the Birds. What an offseason, huh? The quarterback position was the lone area where we thought we had an understanding. The plan seemed crystal clear, or so we thought. This is Jalen Hurts' team, and Tanner McKee is his backup. That part we got right, but we've been thrown a curveball while studying the back-half of the depth chart. Dorian Thompson-Robinson is already looking past the Eagles' practice squad for a spot on the 53-man roster. Dorian Thompson-Robinson was traded to the Eagles from the Browns on March 12, 2025. Cleveland landed Kenny Pickett. Philadelphia also earned a 2025 fifth-round draft pick in the 2025 NFL Draft out of the deal. Then came the NFL Draft. The Eagles drafted another quarterback, Kyle McCord. It was at that point that we thought Thompson-Robinson's fate was sealed. He seemed destined for, at best, a practice squad role, but as the great Lee Corso would say, 'Not so fast, friends.' It's Thompson-Robinson, who has taken control of the race. He has taken third-team snaps in practice. He enjoyed a more impressive showing during the first preseason game. He seems to be running away with the job of emergency quarterback. Kyle McCord seems headed in the other direction. Thompson-Robinson spoke with the Philadelphia media members after the 11th practice of camp, one that precedes the open session at Lincoln Financial Field. 'I feel like I'm settling in well, scheme, teammates, coaches, being around the building, getting to know the city, I feel like I've adjusted well. The Eagles are such a great organization. It's a lot easier, instead of going the opposite way (to a losing team). I feel like everyone has uplifted me, and helped me along, tried to get me up to speed as fast as possible.' Yeah, that doesn't sound like a guy who intends on going anywhere and doing so quietly. Frankly, there are seemingly only two ways that McCord can make up ground. Thompson-Robinson can implode while McCord seemingly does an immediate about-face, or Philadelphia can be stubborn and hold onto McCord simply because they used draft capital to acquire him. Studs and duds from the Eagles' 34-27 win over the Bengals in the preseason opener
The Eagles returned to Lincoln Financial Field on Thursday night. They faced a quality opponent out of the gate, with the Bengals' explosive offense playing the first series in a quest to reduce a slow start to the regular season. The results were offensive fireworks, and Tanner McKee once again put the NFL world on notice about his diverse skill set. Philadelphia will have a day off on Friday, before a light Saturday session, an open stadium practice for the fans on Sunday, and two days of joint practice with Cleveland next week. With the dust settled, we're looking at the studs and duds from an impressive preseason opener. Stud-QB Tanner McKee Going back to Week 18 of last season, McKee has been on a blistering pace. On Thursday night, the Eagles' backup quarterback got the start and finished 20-for-25 for 252 yards with two touchdowns and a passer rating of 135.5. Dud-CB Kelee Ringo The Eagles rested Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean, leaving all the action for Kelee Ringo and Adoree' Jackson. Ringo allowed a 36-yard catch-and-run touchdown to Ja'Marr Chase, and whiffed on the tackle, adding further scrutiny to a tough night. Stud- WR Johnny Wilson The big wide receiver had a quiet training camp, but proved to be a matchup nightmare on Thursday night. A tweener who is part wide out, part tight end, Wilson had three catches for 73 yards (24.3 avg) and made two spectacular catches on 50/50 balls against smaller defenders. Dud-WR Elijah Cooks You can't make the club on the injured list, and the training camp standout suffered an injury on a kick return and was carted off with a significant injury. Stud-OL Tyler Steen The former Alabama left tackle looks to finally solidify himself in his third attempt at winning the starting right guard job, and Steen was blowing holes open early on in the win over Cincinnati. Steen delivered a crushing block to Bengals defender Logan Wilson on a 38-yard run by Will Shipley. Stud-AJ Dillon Philadelphia has a solid trio of running backs, and Dillon showed that he still has it, gaining 27 yards on five carries. He also caught three passes for 27 yards. Dud-OL Kenyon Green Acquired in the trade for C.J. Gardner-Johnson, the former first-round pick got third-team snaps, was called for an obvious holding penalty, and exited the game after getting injured in the fourth quarter after a Kyle McCord interception. Dud-QB Kyle McCord In a battle with Dorian Thompson-Robinson for the third quarterback spot, McCord completed 1 of 5 passes for 8 yards and threw an interception. Stud- Tariq Castro-Fields The former Penn State cornerback had three pass breakups in the fourth quarter and is a player to watch. 5 standouts from the Eagles' 34-27 win over the Bengals in the preseason opener
With the dust settled, we're looking at five standouts from the Philadelphia Eagles' 34-27 win over the Cincinnati Bengals in the preseason opener. WR Darius Cooper: An undrafted free agent wide receiver out of FCS, Tarleton State, Cooper has been a training camp standout and dominated the Bengals with six catches on seven targets for 82 yards and a touchdown. DT Ty Robinson Philadelphia traded Thomas Booker to Las Vegas for cornerback Jakorian Bennett, and Robinson was a significant reason why Howie Roseman was comfortable moving on from the veteran. The rookie out of Nebraska is powerful and has a high motor that should rub off on his teammates. Robinson got his first NFL sack in the second quarter. WR Ainias Smith A player we had squarely on the roster bubble showed his explosive traits on Thursday night. Smith caught a touchdown pass and also added a 46-yard punt return on the night. LB Patrick Johnson Back where it all started, Johnson had a sack nullified, but made the most of his snaps and even recorded an interception. RB ShunDerrick Powell The rookie plays with burst and excellent footwork, carving out six carries for 32 yards (5.3 avg) and one touchdown. What is the 'Tush Push Play'? All on the 'nearly banned' NFL tactic Eagles used to beat Bengals
The Philadelphia Eagles won 34-27 in Thursday's (August 7) game against the Cincinnati Bengals using a technique all too familiar to the team. The 'tush push' was used by the Eagles soon into play, starting and has a controversial history attached to it. Tanner McKee, backup QB in the regular season, pushed in for the score on a fourth-and-goal from the Bengals' 1-yard line late in the first quarter. The Philadelphia Eagles defense huddles during the second half against the Cincinnati Bengals(Getty Images via AFP) What is the tush push play? As per Jeff Kerr of CBS Sports, 'The 'Tush Push' has been the signature play of the Eagles' run over the last three seasons, which has resulted in a Super Bowl victory, two Super Bowl appearances, and 39 regular-season wins.' Further explaining the play strategy, he writes, 'In the 'Tush Push,' the quarterback is pushed forward through the defensive line by players behind him. The running back and the tight end are lined up behind the quarterback and push the quarterback through the defensive line. The play is used in short-yardage and goal-line situations and has a very high success rate.' Attempts to ban Given the rough nature and lack of player ability involved in the move, several league owners, in particular the Green Bay Packers, have actively tried to get the move banned. According to AP News, a proposal to ban the move failed by two votes in a recent May poll. The meeting was held in Minnesota and garnered a 22-10 vote in favor of banning the move. League laws, however, require a three-fourths majority to change game rules. The Packers had originally brought forward the proposal in the offseason and were subsequently supported by health and safety committees for both the players and the owners and the league's competition committee. Such a ban had existed two decades ago but was lifted due to inefficiency in consistent implementation. Despite all attempts, the tush push play remains legal in the NFL as of now.
