Everton handed injury boost as David Moyes shares update before crucial summer

The operation on Everton defender James Tarkowski's hamstring is believed to have gone well. The centre-back, whose season ended when he pulled up at Goodison Park against Manchester City, underwent surgery on the injury around the start of the month. The early indications are that the procedure went well, boosting hopes the centre back will be able to complete a positive recovery over the summer. Tarkowski limped off in the second half of the home defeat to City on April 19. The game was goalless at the time and Pep Guardiola's side took advantage of the loss of the talismanic 32-year-old to grab three points with two late goals. Moyes said the following week that the former Burnley player's rehabilitation could impact his pre-season - a major blow given the manager's desire to rebuild his squad this summer around the defensive axis of Tarkowski, Jarrad Branthwaite and goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. Asked about Tarkowski's situation, Moyes said: 'The word was it [the surgery] was really good, they went quite quickly. They stitched it together, I'm getting told, so they seem to think it went well, the operation."

Everton condemn online threats aimed at James Tarkowski

Everton have condemned the online abuse James Tarkowski has faced following Wednesday's Merseyside Derby defeat to Liverpool. Tarkowski was fortunate to escape a red card following an 11th-minute challenge on Alexis Mac Allister. The centre-back won the ball but followed through in a reckless manner, catching Mac Allister high on the leg. Advertisement He received a yellow card for the tackle, but the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) later admitted the decision was a mistake. PGMOL deemed Tarkowski's challenge met the threshold for serious foul play. Everton have now released a statement to say the club are 'aware of threats made towards James Tarkowski, and his family on social media' in the aftermath of the game. The Toffees are engaging with police ahead of a potential investigation and have 'strongly' condemned the abuse aimed at the 32-year-old. 'Everton Football Club is aware of threats made towards James Tarkowski, and his family on social media. Such behaviour is completely unacceptable and has no place in football or society,' a club statement read. Advertisement 'The Club is liaising with James and his wife Samantha, and stands ready to engage with the social media companies and assist the police with any potential investigation. 'Everton strongly condemns any form of online or offline intimidation, threats or abuse directed at players, staff, or their families.' Everton's James Tarkowski set to undergo surgery on season-ending hamstring injury

Everton defender James Tarkowski is set to miss the rest of the season with a hamstring injury that will require surgery, David Moyes has confirmed. Tarkowski was forced off in the 52nd minute of last weekend's 2-0 home defeat by Manchester City. The centre-back went down, appeared to clutch his right leg, and immediately signalled to the Everton bench that he would not be able to continue. Advertisement Before Everton's trip to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea on Saturday, Moyes confirmed that the 32-year-old would miss the remainder of the season and praised the defender's performances this campaign 'Tarky is out (of the Chelsea game),' Moyes said. 'He is going to be out for the rest of the season. It is a huge blow for us because he has been such a big part of what we have done (this season) and why we have done so well in this period. 'We have Michael Keane available and will look at our options until the end of the season.' Keane replaced Tarkowski against City, having previously spent the last 11 Premier League games as an unused substitute. Both of City's goals came after Tarkowski's withdrawal, with Nico O'Reilly scoring in the 84th minute and Mateo Kovacic in the 92nd. Tarkowski had started all 33 of Everton's league games this season, opening the campaign by partnering Keane and later Jarrad Branthwaite. The Englishman has been the club's de facto on-field captain this term, with Seamus Coleman restricted to only three starts in all competitions. Following Saturday's trip to Chelsea, Everton play Ipswich Town, Fulham, Southampton and Newcastle United to finish the season. Moyes' side are 13th in the league on 38 points. Tarkowski's injury is undoubtedly a blow to both player and club. Everton will lose a key figure for the final five games of the season, while he will be deprived of the opportunity of leading the team out in their final games at Goodison. Having been on a run of 111 straight starts, the central defender will also fall short of Wayne Bridge's Premier League record (113) for an outfielder. For someone as proud of his fitness record as Tarkowski, that will be tough to take. Given his importance in recent years, Everton will hope he is back fit for as much of pre-season as possible, especially with the squad likely to experience a wide-scale overhaul this summer. In the short term, there is a major void to fill. Advertisement Tarkowski's injury does, at least, present an opportunity for others in the squad to impress Moyes. Keane filled the role off the bench in Saturday's 2-0 home defeat to Manchester City, but it is possible the nature of Everton's performance in that final half hour, where they conceded twice in quick succession, will prompt a rethink from Moyes. The Scot did say post-match that he had picked Keane as it represented just one tweak to an otherwise settled defence and would, in theory, lead to less upheaval. With a week of training for Moyes to hone his plans for Chelsea, Jake O'Brien should also come into contention to play alongside Jarrad Branthwaite, but that would mean shifting the Irishman inside and bringing in one of club captain Coleman, Ashley Young or Nathan Patterson at right-back. Using O'Brien in the centre would at least allow the Everton manager to learn more about his squad, especially with Keane's deal expiring at the end of the season and the £17million ($22.6m) signing from Lyon having spent most of his time so far slightly out of position on the right. It feels like time to give him a run in his favoured position and see what he can do there against top Premier League opposition. Everton will almost certainly miss Tarkowski, their defensive leader, while he is out. But Moyes will hope others step forward and seize their chance to impress.

Tarkowski to undergo surgery on hamstring injury

James Tarkowski will not play for Everton again this season after sustaining a hamstring injury that requires surgery. David Moyes said the 32-year-old's recovery could also impact the Toffees' pre-season preparations for the 2025-2026 campaign. Tarkowski hobbled off injured during the 2-0 home defeat by Manchester City last weekend. The 32-year-old has not missed a league game since joining Everton in July said losing the centre-back for the remaining five Premier League matches was a "big blow". "Tarky plays such a huge part in how we've done so well in this period," said the Everton boss on Friday. The Toffees are 13th in the table and face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. Tarkowski has been a key player during his time at Everton, and he scored a memorable last-gasp equaliser against Liverpool at Goodison Park in February. His injury means he falls two games short of equalling Wayne Bridge's Premier League record of 113 consecutive starts for an outfield player.

Howard Webb clarifies two Liverpool vs Everton controversies including VAR 'error'

Liverpool saw off Everton in April's Merseyside derby but Howard Webb admits the referees and VAR made an error by not showing a red card - but backed their other major call The Merseyside derby at the start of April ended with Liverpool landing a narrow 1-0 win over Everton - owing to Diogo Jota 's match winner. The contest wasn't without refereeing controversy though as PGMOL chief Howard Webb confessed VAR made a serious blunder. Liverpool's win allowed them to remain in control of the Premier League title race and atoned for the points they let slip at Goodison Park weeks before as the Toffees scored in the eighth minute of added time at Goodison Park to rescue a point. ‌ There would be no repeat but the visitors felt aggrieved by the manner of Jota's winning strike. The Portuguese star was sent though after he received a backheel from Luis Diaz before dodging tackles and slotting home. Replays showed Diaz had been standing in an offside position earlier in the build-up, but he was judged not to have been interfering with play and the goal was allowed to stand. The linesman never put his flag up and the offside check was only precautionary with nothing needing to be flagged. Webb backed his officials on this occasion as he said on Match Officials Mic'd Up: "This all comes down to the point that just being in an offside position, which Luis Diaz is, is not in itself sufficient to be penalised. "It's all about what you do whilst in that position and you have to do one of the things here [listed in the video], to be penalised for offside interfering with an opponent. We don't see Luis Diaz do any of these things whilst in the offside position, he just stands there. "Now you can feel a little bit sorry for Tarkowski here because he stretches out to stop the ball going through to Luis Diaz, but that ship sails some time ago, whereby if you're just in that offside position and don't do anything behind a defender you won't be penalised." ‌ Liverpool though will feel as though they should've been playing against ten men long before that. Their players were up in arms as James Tarkowski slid through to challenge Alexis Mac Allister. The defender won the ball, but then caught the Argentine high. Originally a yellow card was given before VAR reviewed the challenge and concluded that Tarkowski had won the ball first and that the subsequent contact was unavoidable. Webb though insists they put too much onus on whether he won the ball with the tackle being branded reckless. He admitted: "This is a red-card challenge. It's an error by the officials not to send Tarkowski off. From the outset with this show, we've committed to showing good examples of VAR use and also where we don't use it in the right way, and this was one of those examples. ‌ "The referee recognises on the field that Tarkowski plays the ball and feels that the way he does so is reckless. The VAR then checks that on-field decision of a yellow card and puts too much focus on the fact that Tarkowski plays the ball. "But Tarkowski makes a choice to play the ball in that way. Players have to consider their opponent's safety, even when playing the ball. Tarkowski lunges into the challenge using excessive force and endangers Mac Allister's safety. It should have been a red card."
