How director Tarun Mansukhani predicted Priyanka's global success with 'Desi Girl'
Director Tarun Mansukhani still vividly remembers the moment Priyanka Chopra became the Desi Girl, not just on screen but in pop culture history. In an exclusive conversation with India Today, the 'Dostana' director opened up about the origin of the song, his deep bond with Priyanka, and how he foresaw her global success long before the world to India Today exclusively, Tarun opened up about how the iconic track 'Desi Girl' became hers. 'When I was making 'Dostana', we were looking for a song. And eventually, I got this song - Desi Girl. I remember, at that time, there were only CDs. We were shooting some other scenes first, and I had just gotten the song. I told her to come sit in the car so she could hear it on proper speakers.'advertisementContinuing further, he said, 'I made her sit in the car, I put the CD on, and - I think she'll be able to tell you this as well - before I played the song, I said to her: 'No matter how big you become, no matter where you go in life, they will always refer to you as this.' And I played the song.' Tarun recalled the gut feeling he had: 'I knew from that moment - that this girl was going to be beyond global. Because when I heard the song, I thought, 'Oh my God, this girl... it is just her.'' View this post on Instagram A post shared by India Today (@indiatoday)The director spoke about her extraordinary journey with genuine admiration. 'Of course, we always imagine the best for our friends, right? We want them to be the richest, happiest people in the world. But she has surpassed all of that, beyond anything we could've imagined. She has achieved so much more than we even hoped for her,' he then said, 'When it comes to Priyanka, I have a completely different relationship. We got to know each other during 'Dostana', and that friendship developed from there. The bond I share with her goes very deep - for me, it feels karmic.' Describing their bond, he explained, 'We're not on the phone every day. We talk very rarely - it's mostly just chats or Instagram shares. But the connection we have is something that feels meant to be. I can call her up at any point in time and tell her my worst things or my best things without feeling judged - and I know it works the other way around too.'What makes their friendship rare in the film industry is its lack of any agenda: 'We've never had a friendship that was about work. It was never, 'Oh, we need to be friends because then we can work together.' She might think I'm a good director. I think she's the most fabulous actor. But that has never even for a moment entered our friendship. And that's what makes it so pure. I truly love the relationship and friendship I share with her.'As our conversation with the director continued, we explored his future projects and dream locations. It was here that Tarun revealed a deeply personal connection to a place he'd never visited - asked Tarun if he would be open to shooting in Kashmir, given the current scenario, he said, "I would love to. I would go there at the drop of a hat. Whatever pointers aside, for whatever reasons of security and all of that... It's ours. It's home."Mansukhani expressed a desire to explore Kashmir not just as a filmmaker. He admitted that, despite his busy schedule, he has long desired to experience the breathtaking beauty. "I've unfortunately never been there," he revealed."So, I want to and hope - after this film, when I get a break - I want to go. I really want to go. I want to travel for a while - just get to see my own country a lot more,' he said, reflecting a sense of national Bobby Deol too took his next project to Kashmir. He will be shooting his next big show in Kashmir, as per reports. He will be the first Bollywood star to lead a full-scale shoot in the region following the tragic incident in Pahalgam earlier this year.

‘Male Mira Kapoor': Housefull 5 director draws flak for comparing babies to dogs in Deepika Padukone-Vanga row
Ever since news broke that Deepika Padukone turned down Sandeep Reddy Vanga's Prabhas-starrer Spirit, there has been a lot of conversation around the film industry being conducive to new working mothers, pay parity and more. Housefull 5 director Tarun Mansukhani thought he was speaking in support of Deepika's desire for an 8-hour work day when he said he'd also like to get home at a reasonable time to look after his dog. But the internet is miffed at him for comparing looking after a dog to a baby. (Also Read: Was Deepika Padukone ousted for demanding 10% profit share, ₹25 cr for Sandeep Reddy Vanga's Spirit? New claims emerge) Last month, a Pinkvilla report claimed that Deepika turned down Spirit over disagreements about pay scale, Telugu dialogues, and bold scenes. But the one that caught everyone's attention was that the actor wanted to work a strict 8-hour schedule, because she had daughter Dua, who is less than a year old, to look after. While initially there were reports of her 'unprofessionalism', the Hindi film industry soon rallied in support of her with Ajay Devgn and Mani Ratnam supporting her desire for reasonable work hours. When Housefull 5 director Tarun was asked about it in an interview with India Today, he was supportive of Deepika and said that there were always ways to work around tight working hours. He also stated that whatever demands the actor has need to be mentioned in a contract beforehand, instead of being brought up last minute. He also said, 'I want to go home and spend time with my dog. So I get the vibe and totally get the feeling. But just put it in the contract from the beginning, then everyone's prepared,' drawing flak for it. The internet was not happy about Tarun comparing looking after a dog to a baby. One Redditor seemed stunned with the comparison, commenting, 'Is he comparing spending time with his dog with Deepika's newborn baby?' Another wrote, 'Male Mira Kapoor. Babies are puppies.' One person pointed out, 'Men: oh taking care of a kid is just like a pet be away from them even if you're missing them, don't worry about breastfeeding or any of your own maternal instincts. Also men: women should be at home and take care of their kids and clean the house what's wrong with these career-oriented women.' A miffed Redditor even called Tarun a 'manchild' writing, 'He's trying to become another manchild.. answer is very kidish.' Another thought the director's statement wasn't supportive at all and was instead a dig at Deepika, 'This guy comparing dogs with babies clearly doesn't understand the difference between want and need … obviously a dig at her.' A Redditor even wondered when new mothers will be shown grace, writing, 'She's a god damn mother, can we please cancel these unaware idiotic statement passing directors who wont show any grace towards a woman to recover post birth? JEEZ. THIS IS 21ST CENTURY FFS.' On Saturday, it was announced that Deepika will soon star in Atlee's film with Allu Arjun. The makers shared an announcement video that saw her pulling off stunts in a controlled environment.

Housefull 5 Director 'Understands' Deepika Padukone's 8-Hr Shift Ask: 'Want To Spend Time With My Dog'
Last Updated: Tarun opined that an 8-hour shift ask is justified, but should be voiced before the shoot commences. Housefull 5 director Tarun Mansukhani has addressed Deepika Padukone 's reported demand for an 8-hour shift since becoming a mother. In a recent chat with India Today, Tarun opined that an 8-hour shift ask is justified, but should be voiced before the shoot commences. He said that it must be included in the contract. Tarun mentioned that he would also like to be home and spend time with his dog. Tarun Mansukhani said, 'I want to go home and spend time with my dog, and I understand the feeling. But you have to put it in the contract so that everyone is prepared." He said that once the film goes on floors, there are a lot of other factors involved, like actors' schedules, location permissions and money. Addressing Deepika Padukone's reported 8-hour work request, he said, 'No problem. Eight hours? I'll need that many extra days, and then we'll go ahead, but you need to tell me in advance. You can't come to me at 11 am and tell me you need to leave at 5. There are other actors involved; the location for the day might not be available again, or the budget might not allow it." Deepika Padukone, Sandeep Reddy Vanga Row For the unversed, Deepika Padukone was reportedly removed from Sandeep Reddy Vanga's Spirit as the director couldn't match her demands. As per reports, these demands included an 8-hour work day, which amounts to 6-hour shoot time, and a remuneration upwards of Rs 20 crore. Several acclaimed celebs like Ajay Devgn and Mani Ratnam have spoken in favour of Deepika's reported demand for an 8-hour shift. Housefull 5 Review Meanwhile, Tarun Mansukhani's Housefull 5 has finally been released in theatres. News18 Showsha gave the film 2.5/5 stars. Our review read, 'The movie is set on a luxurious cruise ship, and a chain of mishaps and murder make up the plot of the film, which feels stretched and dull. Besides a weak script, the film is filled with mediocre jokes and situational comedy that doesn't hit the right chord." 'However, it does offer a few laughs here and there. Throughout the film, Akshay Kumar, Abhishek Bachchan and Riteish Deshmukh are trying their best to make their chemistry and comic sense to make you laugh. But, the dull script and somewhat lame jokes don't live up to their efforts. While the three male actors are running around in their own rut, the three lead women of the film are having a joy ride of their own," the review also mentioned. Housefull 5 Director Recalls Shah Rukh Khan's Advice: '99 Per Cent Of Your Job Is...'
Last Updated: Tarun Mansukhani recalled Shah Rukh Khan's behaviour on sets. Director Tarun Mansukhani is gearing up for the release of his upcoming film, Housefull 5. The film features 19 celebrated actors coming together for a comedy-thriller. However, one actor whose advice Tarun follows as a rule of thumb is Shah Rukh Khan. In a recent chat with Galatta India, Tarun recalled Shah Rukh's golden advice. Tarun said, 'I remember just before starting Dostana, he told me, 'What you think is direction, like, putting the camera here, or setting the shot, is just 1% of filmmaking, 99% of your job is managing people.'" Tarun has worked with Shah Rukh Khan as an assistant and associate director on films such as Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001), Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003), and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006). 'I've seen him picking up chairs and helping wrap up shoots quickly when rain was approaching. He'd become like an assistant director just to get things done efficiently. He is so much a part of the crew that you will never feel that he is Shah Rukh Khan. He is always cracking jokes, and most importantly, he constantly teaches you," Tarun said. Meanwhile, as for Housefull 5, the film will reportedly be the most expensive comedy film of Indian cinema. With 19 A-list celebrities, a whopping budget and the tag of a successful franchise, all eyes are on Housefull 5 to 'revive' Indian cinema. As per Pinkvilla's sources, 'From a star-cast of 19 acclaimed actors to the logistical challenges of shooting at real locations with a massive ensemble, Housefull 5 was among the most difficult films to set up for Sajid Nadiadwala. He has made a lavish 'Killer Comedy' for the audience, without compromising on the costs." The report mentions that Housefull 5 is being made on a budget of Rs 225 crore (Excluding PnA). If the report is to be believed, Housefull 5 is the most expensive comedy film in Indian cinema, surpassing the budgets of films like Housefull 4 and Golmaal Again. Directed by Tarun Mansukhani, Housefull 5 features a star-studded cast including Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh, Abhishek Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Fardeen Khan, Shreyas Talpade, Nana Patekar, Jackie Shroff, Dino Morea, Jacqueline Fernandez, Nargis Fakhri, Chitrangada Singh, Sonam Bajwa, Soundarya Sharma, Chunky Pandey and Johnny Lever among others.
