Jayson Tatum reportedly recruiting 7x All-NBA player to Boston Celtics

After tearing his Achilles tendon in the Boston Celtics' Eastern Conference Semifinals playoff matchup against the New York Knicks, chances are Jayson Tatum will miss all of the upcoming season. Yet, that's reportedly not stopping the Celtics' franchise cornerstone from trying to get his team more help. According to the Boston Globe's Gary Washburn, Tatum has been busy trying to recruit former Milwaukee Bucks point guard Damian Lillard to join the Celtics this offseason. It's an interesting connection, considering the two previously shared the floor for Team USA, but are now bonded by the star duo's ongoing recovery from a torn Achilles tendon. 'According to NBA sources, Tatum has been active in recruiting Lillard to Boston, and the market for the point guard is limited because his injury will prevent him from likely playing most of next season. Lillard sustained his injury on April 27, 15 days prior to Tatum's injury.' Boston Globe on Damian Lillard/Jayson Tatum While Lillard likely won't be playing during the upcoming regular season either, he's expected to prioritize the opportunity to land with another contending team after falling short of his goals with Milwaukee. Advertisement Being that Boston has a pair of All-NBA talents in Tatum and Jaylen Brown, the Celtics would appear to be as good a fit as any other opportunity for Lillard. Plus, without an established star point guard in Boston, Lillard should have a starting role waiting for him, as soon as he can prove to be healthy again. Celtics' Jayson Tatum reportedly recruiting 9-Time All-Star to Boston

Damian Lillard continues to be linked with the Boston Celtics. The 9-time All-Star is currently a free agent, having seen his contract get waived and stretched by the Milwaukee Bucks. Lillard, who is currently recovering from an Achilles tendon tear, is likely to have multiple suitors around the NBA, as teams look to secure his services despite him likely being out for the season. According to Gary Washburn of The Boston Globe, Jayson Tatum is playing a significant role in recruiting Lillard to the TD Garden. Tatum is also out due to an Achilles tear, but it would appear that he's already planning for his return to the rotation, either toward the end of the 25-26 season or at the start of the 26-27 campaign. 'Damian Lillard remains a free agent but is considering his options, and the Celtics are indeed one of them,' Washburn wrote. 'According to NBA sources, Tatum has been active in recruiting Lillard to Boston, and the market for the point guard is limited because his injury will prevent him from likely playing most of next season. Lillard sustained his injury on April 27, 15 days prior to Tatum's injury.' Lillard, 34, spent two seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks, but was unable to taste the success he craves. During his tenure with the franchise, he averaged 24.6 points, 7 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game, shooting 43.4% from the field and 36.4% from deep. Despite his undoubted talent, Lillard would need to adjust his play style in order to fit with the Celtics. He wouldn't be able to dominate touches and usage rate, as he would likely be the third option behind Tatum and Jaylen Brown. As such, it would be interesting to see whether he could sacrifice some of his own offense if it meant contending for a championship. Celtics fans will undoubtedly be hoping they can find out the answer to that question. Watch the "Taylor Talks Celtics" podcast on: YouTube: Website:

Celtics named frontrunners to land three-time All-Star

This offseason has not been that best so far for the Boston Celtics by their standards. They have not made a giant splash yet in free agency and the team is still dealing with the injury of Jayson Tatum, who ruptured his achilles in the second round of the NBA Playoffs against the New York Knicks. However, according to Heavy Sports, there is one star that Boston can land this offseason: Bradley Beal. Beal is expecting a buyout with the Phoenix Suns, which will make him a free agent. As a three-time All-Star, there will be no shortage of interest in Beal. Advertisement The LA Clippers have been mentioned as an early favorite to get Beal. Other teams that have been rumored to be in the mix are the Miami Heat, Milwaukee Bucks and Golden State Warriors. But the Celtics cannot be forgotten about in this case. Tatum and Beal go way back with both kids being from St. .Louis attending the same high school. In the past, Beal teaming up with Tatum in Boston has been talked about, but it never panned out. This time around, it could happen. Boston's situation offers something that few teams around the league do: stability and structure. Not to mention, Boston is in need of a star guard like Beal. Without Tatum for what will likely be the majority, if not, more of the 2025-2026 season, the Celtics are going to need someone that can somewhat replicate the production of Tatum. Bradley Beal may end up being the guy that steps in for Tatum's absence.

Celtics Reveal Huge Update on Jayson Tatum's Recovery

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Boston Celtics are still licking their wounds following the heartbreaking end to the 2024-25 NBA season. Losing to the New York Knicks in the second round of the NBA Playoffs was bad enough. Add in the fact that Jayson Tatum tore his Achilles in that series made it much worse. Following the Achilles tear, Tatum is expected to miss most if not all of the 2025-26 season. He was not the only star to tear his Achilles in the playoffs, with both Damian Lillard and Tyrese Haliburton also suffering the same fates. Tatum has been working hard in his rehab process already. He's bound and determined to get back on the court as soon as possible and pick up where he left off. Brad Stevens, the Celtics' president of basketball operations, spoke out recently with an update about both Tatum and Jaylen Brown. Of course, Brown underwent knee surgery after the season ended to repair a partially torn meniscus in his right knee. "Jayson is working every single day. He has literally been here every day, except he took a few days break, but when he takes a few days break, (trainer) Nick (Sang) goes with him. So he's still working every single day," Stevens said. "It's been unique to be here in June, and the early part of July, and both Jayson and Jaylen are here. We've played, obviously, late (in the playoffs) and this is usually the time where guys get away. But coming off of each of them having surgery, they've both been here. Jaylen was in this morning, he did a shooting workout, looks good. Jayson was in — moving pretty fast on that boot today. All indications are they are both progressing at incredible rates, which is great. But we're not going to put any pressure on Jayson to get back any time soon. We have no reason to believe that Jaylen won't be all clear and ready to go fairly shortly." Simply hearing that he is progressing quickly in his recovery is great news. Holding him out for the 2025-26 season would not be a bad strategy. Along those lines, the Indiana Pacers recently put an end to the speculation about Haliburton potentially making a comeback next season. Haliburton's injury did happen well after Tatum's though. Hopefully, there are no setbacks on Tatum's road to recovery. This is great news, but there is still a lot of work to do to get back on the court. Kevin Durant offers up advice for Jayson Tatum after Achilles injury

Jayson Tatum in the pool rehabbing his Achilles🔥 (via — Overtime (@overtime) Durant — who played alongside Tatum during Team USA's gold-medal triumphs during the 2020 and 2024 Summer Olympics — said the Celtics forward has been one of several players who have reached out to him for advice during this rehab process. Advertisement 'Of course, JT and [Damian Lillard] hit me up, I feel like I'm the Achilles guy,' Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up Durant suffered a torn Achilles tendon during Game 5 of the 2019 NBA Finals, forcing him to miss the entire 2019-20 season before he played in 35 games during the 2020-21 campaign. Despite missing nearly 18 months of action, Durant seemingly hasn't missed a beat since coming back from a career-shifting injury. Since the 2021-22 season, Durant has averaged 36.7 minutes, 28.0 points, and 6.6 rebounds per game. Advertisement Considering that Durant made a full recovery from his own catastrophic injury, both James and Nash asked the 36-year-old forward how he adjusted his game after spending more than a year rehabbing away from the court. 'Those guys are cut from a cloth that they're rare individuals,' Durant said of Tatum and Lillard. 'This is just a little stoppage in their journey that they're just going to have to sit down and lock in on. I think it'll be easy for them to lock in once they truly grasp that 'I'm gonna be out for a year.' 'Initially that takes a few weeks for you to truly understand. This is probably the first time in their whole lives they gotta sit down and not play. They physically can't play. That's probably the first time they've had to go through that.' A natural scorer like Durant was able to not miss a step since returning from injury. But, the current Rockets forward acknowledged that players currently rehabbing Achilles tears like Tatum, Lillard, and Tyrese Haliburton will need to change their approach on the court to account for such an extended layoff. 'Your game and your body is going for sure change,' Durant said. 'When you tear your Achilles, your calf muscle goes to nothing. You sit around for three months and you can't move your calf. If you look at mine now, my right is smaller than my left. But that's just from not using it for those four or five months. Completely shut down. So that's most of the work is getting that calf back. You have to get it bigger and stronger.' Beyond just building strength back up, Durant said that step-back shooters like Tatum and Lillard might need to change their shot selection, especially early on in their return to game action. Advertisement 'I think that's going to be the adjustment for them,' Durant said of Tatum and Lillard. 'Those deep threes that both of those guys shoot, they shoot a lot of tough step-back threes. I was shooting those before I got injured, and I fine-tuned my game to take some of that stuff out, the sidestep. 'Not because it's a bad shot, it's because I didn't truly have enough power in my right leg yet in order for me to do those moves. So it's going to be that type of adjustment for guys coming back from Achilles, just building that power up.' Despite the hurdles facing Tatum over the next year, Durant expressed confidence that Tatum will regain his form as one of the top players in the NBA. 'Once you get confidence, because I threw myself back out there too. As soon as I could hoop, I was playing,' Durant said. 'Once they throw themselves out there, those guys are going to be alright.'
