Torrey Craig is open to returning to Boston Celtics if opportunity is there
Torrey Craig is open to returning to Boston Celtics if opportunity is there After coming over after being waived during the season by the Chicago Bulls, veteran forward Torrey Craig is looking to return to the Boston Celtics for the 2025-26 season. Appearing in just nine games for the Chicago Bulls this past season, Craig was signed by Boston in February and while he didn't offer up a ton of production, he was a quality three-and-d contributor off the bench for head coach Joe Mazzulla. Facing potential changes coming to the roster in wake of the Jayson Tatum's torn Achilles injury, the 34-year old Craig has expressed interest in returning to Boston for next season. Shortly after they were eliminated by the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference Semifinals, Craig spoke with and said he'd like to be back if the interest is mutual, and feels that the team can still contend even with the Tatum injury. "I love everything about Boston,' Craig said. 'If it was available, then I would see myself coming back. Just being around the guys that previously won the championship – just seeing how they operate, how together they were, just being a part of the Celtic culture. That was a cool experience for me." (H/T Although he only averaged just over 2 points and 2 rebounds per game in 17 games played with Boston, Craig is a respected veteran presence on the team and would bring more bench stability next season. If the Celtics have to change up their starting lineup in a major way, keeping as much of the bench together as possible could be another key to staying a contender. Would the Boston Celtics consider trading Jaylen Brown?
In an offseason that is expected to have plenty of chaos around the NBA, the Boston Celtics will be faced with several decisions to make, and one hypothetical includes trading away superstar Jaylen Brown. Facing the likelihood that they will be without Jayson Tatum for most of, if not all, of the 2025-26 season, the Celtics could look to trade one of their most valuable assets to rebuild the roster as they await the return of Tatum. Trading Jaylen Brown feels as if it would be the most extreme decision the Celtics' front office could make this offseason, and would signal a change in direction for the franchise. While it all feels unlikely to happen, the question is not only would the Celtics consider it, but what a possible return would look like for the team. Watch the video above to see the 'WEEI Afternoons' radio crew discuss the idea of the Celtics potentially trading Jaylen Brown. The easiest argument against it would be that with Tatum out for a long time, it provides an opportunity for Brown to takeover as the face of the franchise, and in turn the front office will have to put together a supporting cast around him to keep them as a contender in the Eastern conference. The Boston Celtics labeled as a logical landing spot for Giannis Antetokounmpo via trade.
The Boston Celtics labeled as a logical landing spot for Giannis Antetokounmpo via trade. Since Jayson Tatum suffered his Achilles tendon injury, the rumor mill has primarily focused on players who could be leaving the Boston Celtics via trade. Jrue Holiday, Kristaps Porzingis and even Jaylen Brown have all been discussed as potential trade chips for Brad Stevens. However, through all of the talk, very little has been said regarding who the Celtics could target this summer. After all, trades usually see players swapping teams. Therefore, any moves Boston chooses to make, will have an impact of Joe Mazzulla's roster. In a May 29 episode of ESPN's "Get Up", Brian Windhorst cited the Celtics as a team that could make sense in a trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo. Windhorst's reasoning is that Boston is one of the few teams that could put together a competitive trade package while remaining a competitive roster after the deal had been completed. "I think you have to look at the teams that could make a trade for Giannis that the Bucks would accept and on the other side of the trade would have a contending team," Windhorst said. "So Boston would be on that list. Boston may be the only one." Any move for Giannis would likely entail Boston trading away Brown. His contract would be the most logical in terms of salary matching. Furthermore, he would ensure the Milwaukee Bucks have a high-level forward to continue building around. So, while it's highly unlikely the Celtics get involved in any Giannis sweepstakes, it's good to know they would be among the front-runners due to the strength in depth of the current roster. In truth, though, Stevens is likely going to make a series of smaller moves to help position the franchise for when Tatum returns to the rotation ahead of the 2026-27 season. "Got to learn to walk again": NBA legend shares stark reality on Jayson Tatum recovery Jayson Tatum is facing a long road back to the NBA. The All-NBA forward suffered an Achilles tendon injury during the Boston Celtics' second round loss to the New York Knicks. Tatum has already undergone surgery to repair the tear, but could be facing 12 months on the sidelines as he recovers and rehabilitates his injury. Due to Tatum's injury, the Celtics are expected to make some changes to the current roster. After all, there's no point having such a high payroll if the team isn't expected to compete for the next year or two. When speaking to Kyle Odegard of Esports Insider, former NBA star Dominique Wilkins noted that Tatum should embrace water therapy as part of his rehab program. Wilkins has previously suffered the same injury and immediately found himself back in the MVP conversation once he was cleared to play. 'If he does a lot of water therapy and a lot of individual workouts to get his range of motion back – he's got to learn how to walk again – the mobility and the stretching will help him get back quicker, as well as getting the calf stronger," Wilkins said. "Because when you tear that Achilles tendon, you lose some muscle mass in that leg. You've got to try to stay ahead of the game.' Tatum is young enough to make a full recovery. Players like Wilkins and Kevin Durant have provided the blueprint on how to approach recovery from an Achilles tear. If Tatum can remain focused, stay professional and embrace the journey back to the court, then there's no reason why he can't re-establish himself as a top-tier player in the NBA. Unfortunately for Boston, Tatum's journey is going to take a while. As such, some difficult stretches are ahead in terms of on-court production.
