Collin Morikawa turning attention to 'biggest honor' of representing USA at Ryder Cup after overseas struggles

Collin Morikawa would like to forget about his trip overseas. The two-time major champion, who won the 2021 Open Championship at Royal St. Georges in England, missed the cut at both the Scottish Open and this year's final major at Royal Portrush. In a normal golf season, players can fine-tune their game for the end of the regular season to gear up for the FexEx Cup Playoffs - but this year, there's arguably an even bigger opportunity at hand. The Ryder Cup returns to the United States this year, with the 2025 edition heading to Bethpage Black in Farmingale, New York. Morikawa has played for Team USA on four occasions - two Ryder Cups and two Presidents Cups. He also participated in the 2020 and 2024 Olympics. Morikawa, 28, believes it is the "biggest honor." "Any time you have the red, white, and blue on, it's like nothing else," Morikawa told Fox News Digital in a recent interview. "We play such an individual sport – even though we have a team behind us, we're the ones that get all the credit when we play. But when you play for the red, white and blue, when you represent your country, whether it's the Presidents Cup, Olympics, Ryder Cup, it's the big one. It's not just playing for your team, it's not just playing for the stakes, you're playing for the entire country. And when you have people in all walks of life come together at this one tournament rooting for your team, it's truly the biggest honor. "That's all you can ask for, and when you have that weight you're holding for that week, and you're representing that, you'll never lose that. It's something you'll carry for the rest of your life, but in that moment, you want to do everything you can to bring the best golf and human you are." Morikawa has only three finishes in the top-20 or better since the RBC Heritage three months ago. However, he's been at the pinnacle of the sport before, and knows what it takes for a quick turnaround. "It's so interesting. Sometimes, you feel like you're so far away from great golf, but you're actually a lot closer than you are. It's a degree here and there, a bounce here and there, a break in the first or second round that just kind of changes the entire week," Morikawa said. "We play four days, it's a lot of golf, it's a lot of time overspent that you have to just dwell on, but it's just one little thing, and you never know what that's going to be. "That's why we wake up every day, keep working to try to get better. You have to accept it, and it's just part of what we do. Yes, the past month hasn't been what I wanted, but doesn't mean that tomorrow can't be great, doesn't mean the playoffs won't be amazing, you just have to keep working and essentially not give up." Morikawa currently ranks eighth among American-born golfers in FedEx Cup points following his trip to the United Kingdom - the top-six automatically qualify for the 12-man team. His recent struggles, especially overseas, have none him no favors, and he knows it. However, with the never-give-up mentality he expressed, he feels he may be just fine (surely, his veteran presence gives him some bonus points). "It's a little bit of work to get to that automatic six," Morikawa said, "but I'm very hopeful about it."

Arnold Palmer Cup heading to Tralee in Ireland for 2026 competition

The Arnold Palmer Cup is heading to Ireland in 2026. The 30th Palmer Cup will take place July 3-5, 2026, at Ireland's Tralee Golf Club. Founded in 1997, the Ryder Cup-style competition features U.S. men's and women's collegiate golfers playing side-by-side against a team of their International counterparts in a series that Team USA leads all-time 15-13-1. 'We look forward to welcoming the world's best collegiate golfers to Tralee Golf Club to play boldly and honor the legacy of Arnold Palmer,' Amy Palmer Saunders, board chair of the Arnold & Winnie Palmer Foundation, said in a release. 'In addition to introducing the next generation of young golf talent, this tournament celebrates camaraderie, honor and integrity – the qualities of good character that make a true champion.' Tralee is one of Ireland's premier championship links courses. Designed by legendary golfer Arnold Palmer, the course offers an unparalleled playing experience that blends natural beauty with a world-class challenge. As the first European course designed by Arnold Palmer, Tralee holds a special place in Palmer's legacy. Palmer famously remarked, 'I may have designed the first nine, but surely God designed the back nine." A statue of Palmer by noted sculptor Zenos Frudakis stands near the first tee, honoring Palmer's vision and contributions to the game. A twin statue stands in front of Arnold Palmer Regional Airport in Palmer's hometown of Latrobe, Pennsylvania.

World Aquatics Championships 2025: Team USA's rally comes up just short against Spain in water polo bronze medal match

The U.S. Women's National Team fell just short against Spain, 13-12, in the bronze medal match at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore on Wednesday. Emma Lineback starred for the U.S. with five goals, while Amanda Longan made eight saves. It was Team USA's first fourth-place finish at the World Championships since 2001. En route to the bronze medal match, Team USA beat China, Netherlands, Argentina and Japan. "It was a great comeback," Lineback said after the match. "I think the effort that this team has shown throughout the tournament has been super consistent. We can never question each other's effort and the energy and attitude that we're bringing. The result obviously wasn't what we wanted, we wanted to be on that podium, but still super proud of the group." After a mostly even start to the game, Spain began to pull away for a 7-4 lead at the half. But three third-quarter goals from Emily Ausmus kept Team USA in it, and then Lineback added a few of her own late in the comeback attempt that ultimately fell short. Team USA went 9-for-17 on power plays and 0-for-1 on penalties; Spain went 4-for-10 on power plays and 2-for-2 on penalties.

US Olympic and Paralympic Committee bans trans athletes ahead of LA Games

The US Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) announced it has banned transgender athletes from competing in women's sports on Tuesday, July 22. The news, which is the latest result of the Trump administration's attacks on trans athletes, comes as Los Angeles is gearing up to host the 2028 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games. The USOPC–the governing body that oversees US participation in any Olympic or Paralympic event, as well as athlete well-being–sent a letter to Team USA community members stating that its rules surrounding transgender athletes had changed. According to the organisation's website, the USOPC issued the current version of its Athlete Safety Policy, which includes a new section under 'jurisdiction' entitled 'additional requirements', on June 18. Although the new amendment never explicitly references trans athletes, it states that the USOPC will work with stakeholders such as the International Olympic Committee 'to ensure that women have a fair and safe competition environment consistent with Executive Order 14201.' Named 'Keeping Men out of Women's Sports' by the Trump administration, Executive Order 14201 was signed by the US president on February 5. The policy attempts to ban trans women from all levels of national athletics by cutting federal funds from educational institutions that allow athletes to compete according to their gender identity. While the executive order states that the Trump administration will convene with representatives from major athletic institutions and governing bodies to promote the current US government's stance on trans athletes, the policy has no legally binding effect on organisations like the USOPC. 'As a federally chartered organization, we have an obligation to comply with federal expectations,' the letter announcing the USOPC's rule change said, as reported by The New York Times. View this post on Instagram A post shared by LA28 Olympic & Paralympic Games (@la28) Unlike most global national Olympic and Paralympic committees, the USOPC does not receive federal funding. Instead, the organisation receives most of its money from commercial and private donors. The USOPC recently received a record-breaking $100 million donation from Ross Stevens, who made headlines in 2023 for threatening to pull his $100 million donation from the University of Pennsylvania over allegations of antisemitism following Palestinian solidarity protests on campus. Two days after he called for a change in leadership at UPenn, university president Liz Magill resigned. How the new USOPC rules will be enforced regarding trans athletes remains unclear. The national governing bodies of specific sports that fall under the canopy of the USOPC have begun making rule changes. USA Fencing created a new policy on Friday, July 18, that prevents trans women from competing in women's categories. While the new rules will only impact Team USA, which has only had one openly trans athlete compete in the Olympics or Paralympics, changes at the international level could be coming. The IOC, which first allowed trans women to compete at the Olympics and Paralympics in 2004 and has since scaled back rules surrounding participation, recently elected a new president, Kirsty Coventry, who has previously supported barring trans athletes. And with the return of the Olympics and Paralympics to the US for the first time since 2002, trans rights in sports will likely remain a contested issue in the lead-up to the games.
