Night owls and very early risers might have spotted a fireball lighting up the sky over Edmonton early Monday morning.
Night owls and very early risers might have spotted a fireball lighting up the sky over Edmonton early Monday morning.
A meteor lit up the sky above Edmonton just after 2 a.m. on Monday.
And Frank Florian, the director of planetarium and space sciences at the Telus World of Science Edmonton, says when meteors get as bright as this one, it usually fragments, meaning there could be meteorites scattered somewhere waiting to be found.
'A lot of meteorites contain iron – it's not a definitive test by any means – but if you see a little black rock sitting all on its own and you bring a magnet up close to it and it's attracted to the magnet, it could very well be a meteorite,' Florian told CTV News Edmonton on Monday.
It appears the meteor flew northwest of the city.
If you find potential fragments of it, you can bring them to the Telus World of Science Edmonton to confirm whether or not it is a meteorite.
