Defending-champion Tennessee beats Wake Forest 11-5 to win Knoxville Regional
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Manny Marin hit a two-out, three-run home run, and Andrew Fischer followed with a two-run shot in a seven-run third inning as No. 14 overall seed and defending-champion Tennessee spotted Wake Forest two runs before winning the Knoxville Regional 11-5 on Monday night. The Volunteers (46-17) travel to play No. 3 seed Arkansas (46-13) in a best-of-3 super regional with a berth in the College World Series on the line. Luke Costello had a one-out single off Tennessee starter AJ Russell in the second and Matt Conte hit a two-out home run to give the Demon Deacons a 2-0 lead. Wake Forest reliever Zach Johnston (2-2), who allowed just one run after entering in the third inning with the bases loaded and no outs, walked two in the fourth and left after allowing an RBI single to Reese Chapman that tied it at 2-all. Duncan Marsten entered and threw a wild first pitch to allow the go-ahead run to score. Levi Clark was hit by a pitch for the second time to put two runners on before Marin homered to right-center field from the ninth spot in the order. Fischer followed a single by Gavin Kilen with a shot to right for an 8-2 lead. Matt Scannell answered with a two-run shot to left-center in the fifth and Austin Hawkes singled in a run in the sixth to make it 8-5. Dean Curley singled in a pair in the Tennessee seventh and Kilen had an RBI double in the eighth to cap the scoring. Brayden Krenzel (3-0) got the win, and Liam Doyle got the final seven outs for his first save. Tennessee is aiming for an eighth appearance in the College World Series after winning it for the first time last season. The Vols were runners-up in 1951. ___ AP college sports:

Florida football gets commitment from 3-star offensive lineman out of IMG Academy
Florida football gets commitment from 3-star offensive lineman out of IMG Academy The Florida football program added its third verbal commitment to the 2026 recruiting class with the word from three-star offensive lineman G'Nivre Carr on Sunday. The 6-foot-4-inch, 336-pound trench warrior out of Ocala, Florida, who attended the prestigious IMG Academy in Bradenton, amassed 35 offers before making his decision, choosing the Gators over the Tennessee Volunteers, Georgia Bulldogs and Colorado Buffaloes. Carr had initially set his commitment date for June 25 — after completing his official visit schedule — but jumped at the opportunity to join the Orange and Blue. Growing up just south of Gainesville, the rising senior has made plenty of trips up I-75 to see the school and the athletic facilities. This clearly played a role in his commitment to UF. "Because I'm homegrown, my physical, my character and all the other stuff meet their requirements, and they love me," Carr told Swamp247 prior to his decision. But proximity was not the only important variable in that equation, as offensive line coach Rob Sale and assistant offensive line coach John Decoster put in the work to make him feel welcomed at the program. "Florida has always made me a big priority," he also offered. "Just calling me every day... making sure I'm good, the fam's good. Calling my mom, my stepdad, all of them. It's just the little things for me." G'Nivre Carr's recruiting summary Carr is ranked No. 437 overall and No. 39 at his position nationally according to the 247Sports composite, while the On3 industry ranking has him at Nos. 470 and 39, respectively. UCLA falls to Tennessee in season-ending heartbreaker at Women's College World Series
Tennessee players celebrate after beating UCLA in an elimination game at the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City on Sunday. (Vera Nieuwenhuis / Associated Press) UCLA's run at the Women's College World Series ended Sunday, two innings after the Bruins and slugger Megan Grant were able to extend it. Laura Mealer's bases-loaded, walk-off single to right field in the bottom of the ninth inning propelled Tennessee to a 5-4 win and a semifinal meeting with Texas at 9 a.m. PDT Monday. Advertisement The Volunteers (47-16) were able to do what UCLA could not in the ninth: Deliver with the bases loaded. The Bruins got singles from Savannah Pola and Jordan Woolery followed by an international walk to Grant. But Alexis Ramirez, who homered earlier in the game, grounded out to first to end the inning. Read more: Bombs away: UCLA's Jordan Woolery, Megan Grant are a power duo unlike any other Two innings earlier, Grant changed the complexion of the game and extended the Bruins' season with one swing. Or so the Bruins and their faithful inside Devon Park thought. Grant's two-out, two-run homer to right field off Tennessee ace Karlyn Pickens, a no-doubter that traveled 251 feet and appeared to pull the score even at 4-4, was in doubt for about 15 minutes. Advertisement A review was initiated to determine if Grant touched home plate or was interfered with by a teammate. The on-field call was upheld and play resumed. Taylor Pannell hit a deep fly to left field to lead off the ninth, a ball that caromed off Rylee Slimp's glove and hit the white padding on the top of the wall but didn't leave the field. The play was reviewed and ruled a double. Mealer, who knocked in two runs in the first inning to give the Volunteers an early lead, delivered again, this time on a 2-2 pitch from Taylor Tinsley, who came on in relief of UCLA starter Kaitlyn Terry. Ramirez and Sofia Mujica hit solo home runs in the second inning for the Bruins, who finished the season 55-13. Tennessee overcomes controversial call, defeats UCLA to reach Women's CWS semifinals
OKLAHOMA CITY — Laura Mealer's RBI single in the ninth inning gave Tennessee a 5-4 win over UCLA on Sunday that lifted the Volunteers into the Women's College World Series semifinals and eliminated the Bruins. The game nearly had a controversial finish. UCLA's Megan Grant hit a two-run blast with two outs in the top of the seventh inning that appeared to tie the score at 4-all. There was an umpire review that appeared to involve whether or not Grant touched home plate. After a nearly 15-minute delay, the home run ruling was upheld because it was determined on the field that the runs were scored, and the home plate umpire announced that the play was not reviewable. Had Grant been called out, the game would have ended with Tennessee winning 4-2. Even after giving up the homer, Tennessee's Karlyn Pickens recovered and went the distance for the win. The first-team National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-American gave up four earned runs on 11 hits and struck out seven. She threw 148 pitches. Taylor Pannell's two-run homer put Tennessee up 4-2 in the fifth to help set up the dramatic ending. She had three hits. Tennessee (47-16) will play Texas on Monday in the semifinals and will have the beat the Longhorns twice to advance to the best-of-three championship series. Texas will need to win just once to reach the championship series for the third time in four years. UCLA's Alexis Ramirez and Sofia Mujica hit solo homers. The Bruins (55-13) were trying to become the first semifinalist from the Big Ten since Michigan in 2015. ___ AP college sports:
