France, Eq. Guinea to clash at UN top court over Paris mansion
The central African nation has asked the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to issue emergency orders preventing France from selling the building, seized after Vice President Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue, known as Teodorin, was convicted of corruption. French authorities seized the property, which boasts a cinema, a hammam, and marble and gold water taps, after convicting Obiang under a law targeting fortunes fraudulently amassed by foreign leaders. In 2021, France's top appeals court gave Obiang -- the eldest son of the long-standing president of Equatorial Guinea, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo -- a three-year suspended sentence and 30 million euros ($35 million) in fines. France also confiscated assets, including the luxurious building near the Arc de Triomphe, which has an estimated value well above 100 million euros. In its latest complaint to the ICJ last week, Equatorial Guinea argued French police entered the property last month and changed the locks on several of the doors. Equatorial Guinea called on the court to order France to give it "immediate, complete and unhindered access" to the building. Lawyers for Equatorial Guinea will address judges at the Peace Palace in The Hague at around 10:00 am (0800 GMT), before France responds at around 4:00 pm. 2016 dispute The mansion was also at the centre of an earlier case filed by Equatorial Guinea in 2016 at the ICJ, which rules on disputes between UN member states. Equatorial Guinea argued the building served as the country's embassy in France and that Paris had broken the Vienna Convention, which safeguards diplomats from interference by host countries. But the UN court sided with France, which said the building was merely Teodorin Obiang's residence and served no diplomatic purpose. The ICJ upheld France's objections that Equatorial Guinea had only tried to designate it as such after the investigation into Obiang began, and that the country already had an embassy in Paris. A request for emergency orders -- provisional measures, in the court's jargon -- takes precedence over all other court business. The ICJ is currently wrestling with a busy caseload, including a high-profile case brought by South Africa against Israel, alleging its actions in Gaza have breached the UN Genocide Convention. The court will also deliver a key ruling on countries' climate change obligations next Wednesday. While the ICJ is the highest United Nations court, whose rulings are binding, it has no way of enforcing its decisions. © 2025 AFP

Leaders' Breakfast in Malabo: Africa discusses its economic integration and regional mobility
Yara Sameh The African continent turns its attention to Equatorial Guinea. On Sunday, July 13, under the patronage of H.E. Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, the Malabo Leaders' Breakfast will be held, a high-level meeting also organised by the Africa Prosperity Network (APN) and Invest Equatorial Guinea, in collaboration with the Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The event, which precedes the 7th African Union Mid-Year Coordination Meeting, will bring together Heads of State, AU Commissioners, leaders of the Regional Economic Communities (RECs), global financial leaders, and strategic stakeholders from the continent, with a common goal: to break down the barriers that impede the free movement of people, goods, and services in Africa. A clear agenda: connecting Africa from Africa The main theme of the breakfast will be "Financing and facilitating the movement of people, goods, and services in Africa," seeking to generate real proposals to accelerate continental integration. Under the theme "Financing and Facilitating the Movement of People, Goods, and Services Across Africa," the event will address the challenges that still hinder continental integration, such as insufficient cross-border infrastructure and regulatory restrictions affecting the mobility of people and goods. "Malabo takes us from diagnosis to practice. We will translate commitments into concrete financing and implementation of policies for free movement, starting with the Dollar a Day Fund," said Sidig El Toum, executive director of APN. A simple idea, a continental impact One of the key highlights will be the launch of the Integrated Infrastructure Growth Fund for Africa, an initiative championed by H.E. Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma during the Africa Prosperity Dialogues 2025, whose leadership of the AU Commission launched Agenda 2063. The proposal invites the African middle class to contribute as little as $1 a day, with the goal of generating more than $20 billion annually to finance roads, digital networks, airports, bridges, and other strategic projects that connect people and markets. The African Energy Chamber (AEC) ( proudly supports the recent visit of Gabonese President Brice Oligui Nguema to Equatorial Guinea's Golden Swan industrial complex, marking a defining moment for Africa's oil and gas sector. The Golden Swan model directly addresses one of the most pressing challenges facing Africa's hydrocarbons sector: the management of hazardous and industrial waste generated by upstream and downstream operations. By achieving self-sufficiency in this area, Equatorial Guinea not only protects its ecosystems and communities, but also strengthens its position as a responsible, forward-looking energy producer. The AEC believes that facilities like Golden Swan can serve as blueprints for governments and companies aiming to build energy industries that are both profitable and sustainable. The visit also sets the stage for tangible collaboration between Gabon and Equatorial Guinea, beyond high-level dialogue. Opportunities now exist for technical cooperation, joint ventures and knowledge sharing that could see similar waste management infrastructure developed across the region. The Chamber encourages both governments to formalize this cooperation and take decisive steps to turn this vision into reality. 'This is a defining example of how African oil and gas producers can lead on environmental issues rather than follow,' said NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the African Energy Chamber. Pope Francis, the first Latin American leader of the Roman Catholic Church and a lifelong soccer fan has died, the Vatican said in a video statement on Monday. He was 88, and had survived a serious bout of double pneumonia. "Following the passing of His Holiness, Lega Nazionale Professionisti Serie A can confirm that today's league games in Serie A and Primavera 1 have been postponed," the league said in a statement.
