Bengals rookie DE Shemar Stewart finally signs rookie contract

On Friday, after a lengthy holdout, the Cincinnati Bengals and rookie defensive end Shemar Stewart were able to come to a compromise on contract language and money. This means the last of the 2025 NFL draft class is finally signed and can report to training camp and get to work. The divide between Stewart and the Bengals was related to language Cincinnati wanted in the contract that would allow them to void future guarantees, and to get that, they bumped up Stewart's guaranteed money by around $500,000. The full four-year contract is fully guaranteed at $18.97 million, with $10.4 million of that coming as a signing bonus. Stewart returned to Texas A&M during his holdout and was actually working out with his old college team. We wondered if Stewart might consider just returning to college for 2025, but the way the NFL works, his rights would still belong to the Bengals upon his return, so it's good the two sides were able to come to an agreement. The Bengals selected Stewart No. 17 overall in the 2025 NFL draft, and make no mistake, the pick was a risk, even before this contract snafu. Stewart was drafted based on potential, not production and he's got plenty of catching up to do. Bengals rookie Shemar Stewart to sign $18.9M deal and end contract standoff over 'unfair' clause

The Bengals' standoff with Shemar Stewart is over after the rookie agreed to a four-year, $18.97million contract with Cincinnati. Stewart was selected with the 17th overall pick of this year's NFL draft but the defensive end soon found himself at the center of a feud with the Bengals. Earlier this week, Stewart was pictured training at his former college, Texas A&M, amid a dispute over his rookie contract. There were even rumors that the 21-year-old could try and return to college football. But on Friday, it was revealed that he will sign a fully-guaranteed deal that includes a $10.4m signing bonus. He becomes the final first-round draft pick to have signed with a team. Stewart is now set to join the Bengals almost a week after his fellow rookies reported for training camp. The 21-year-old had skipped all of Cincinnati's offseason workouts and missed the first few days of camp due to a dispute over the terms of his contract. According to reports, the dispute centered around a clause that allows the Bengals to void guaranteed money, should the prospect 'default' on the deal through conduct that is 'detrimental to the team'. This could include committing a criminal offense or hurting himself during a banned activity. Stewart argued that the clause was 'unfair' and accused the Bengals of treating him differently to previous first-round picks. On Friday, however, ESPN reported that a compromise was found, with Stewart agreeing to the new language in the deal in exchange for a 'more lucrative payout structure' than previous No 17 picks. Earlier this week, Bengals president Mike Brown clarified the terms of the contract, revealing that the team would want to take away guaranteed money 'if he did something that really deserved punishment' 'It doesn't mean that we couldn't agree to pay it, but we wouldn't be forced to pay it. I don't want to pay somebody who hypothetically could be in jail for four years at this level of pay,' Brown said. Cincinnati star Trey Hendrickson has still yet to report to camp amid his own contract dispute. The defensive end is set to earn just $16m in the final year of his deal.

Texas A&M's beloved mascot Reveille X has eye removed after glaucoma diagnosis

Reveille X, Texas A&M's rough collie mascot, had her right eye surgically removed after veterinarians diagnosed her with glaucoma, the university's president said Wednesday. The collie — also known as the "First Lady of Aggieland" — was diagnosed with glaucoma after experiencing discomfort and cloudiness in her right eye, President Mark A Welsh III said in a message on the school's website. The veterinary team removed the eye out of an abundance of caution after discovering signs of abnormal tissue, he said. "I'm grateful to report that Miss Rev has come through the surgery successfully, has been discharged and is resting comfortably," Welsh said. Texas A&M's Reveille mascot dates back to 1931, when a group of cadets found an injured dog and sneaked her on to campus. The dog barked when buglers played morning reveille, earning her the Reveille name. Reveille X took over as the latest iteration of the mascot in 2021. A souped-up golf cart known as "Rev Force One" helps transport the collie across campus. Welsh said Reveille will take a brief hiatus from engagements as she recovers. "According to her veterinary team, we can expect Miss Rev to be back to enjoying all her favorite activities — cruising on Rev Force One, attending classes, cheering on the Aggies and keeping our campus squirrels in line — this fall," he said. Rough collie is another term for a long-haired collie.
