‘Baby Shark' song not plagiarised, South Korean top court rules
South Korea's Supreme Court ruled today that the globally popular children's song 'Baby Shark' was not plagiarised, ending a six-year legal battle over an American composer's copyright claim. US composer Jonathan Wright accused South Korean kids content company Pinkfong of copying elements from his own earlier version of the tune. He filed a lawsuit in Seoul in 2019 and sought 30 million won (approx. €18,500) in compensation. Wright, also known as Johnny Only, released his version in 2011, four years before Pinkfong's, but both were based on a traditional melody popular for years at children's summer camps in the United States. South Korea's top court upheld lower court rulings dating back to 2021 and 2023 that found no sufficient grounds to conclude Pinkfong infringed on Jonathan Wright's copyright. Throughout the case's prolonged run, the courts consistently ruled Wright's version did not differ enough from the original melody to qualify as an original creative work eligible for copyright protection, and that Pinkfong's song had clear differences from Wright's. The Supreme Court said its ruling reaffirms the established legal principle on existing folk tunes as derivative work. 'The Supreme Court accepts the lower court's finding that the plaintiff's song did not involve substantial modifications to the folk tune related to the case to the extent that it could be regarded, by common social standards, as a separate work,' it said in a statement. Pinkfong said in a statement to that the ruling confirmed its version of 'Baby Shark' was based on a 'traditional singalong chant' that was in the public domain. The company said it gave the tune a fresh twist by adding 'an upbeat rhythm and catchy melody, turning it into the pop culture icon it is today.' Chong Kyong-sok, Wright's South Korean attorney, said he hadn't received the full version of the court's ruling yet, but called the outcome 'a little disappointing.' 'Anyway, the matter is now settled,' he said. 'It's our work that came out first, so we can handle the licensing on our side and I guess we then each go our separate ways.' Pinkfong's 'Baby Shark' became a global phenomenon after it was released on YouTube in 2015. A year later, the company uploaded a second video which showed two child actors doing hand movements on the song's catchy "doo doo doo doo doo doo" hook. 'Baby Shark Dance' became the most-viewed YouTube video of all time, now exceeding 16 billion views. The song was also featured in various cultural products, including in The Angry Birds Movie 2 and in TV series The Umbrella Academy. 'Baby Shark' remains a crucial product for Pinkfong, which earned 45.1 billion won ($32.6 million) in revenue in the first half of 2025, according to its regulatory filing. The company has turned the five-member shark family - Baby Shark, Mama Shark, Papa Shark, Grandma Shark, and Grandpa Shark - into TV and Netflix shows, films, smartphone apps and globally touring musicals.

Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban gave daughter two rules before making runway debut
Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban have been supportive of their eldest daughter's modeling career. But their support came with two conditions. In an interview with Nylon, published Aug. 6, Sunday Rose — whom the couple welcomed in 2008 — was asked if her celebrity parents had any ground rules for her to follow before making her runway debut. 'There are two big rules,' she told the outlet. 'The first was that I couldn't explore any kind of fashion work until I was 16.' Sunday Rose's debut came on Oct. 1, 2024, when she walked for Miu Miu's spring/summer 2025 show during Paris Fashion Week, according to ABC News. She was 16 at the time. 'The second (rule) is that school always has to come first,' she told Nylon. Sunday Rose admitted to hating the rules at first but has since grown to appreciate them. 'I am actually really glad that I have these rules in place because it keeps me in a good mindset,' she explained. When asked what was going through her mind when she made her debut, the now-17-year-old — she celebrated her birthday on July 7, per People — gave the type of answer her parents would be proud of. 'So at my first show, while I was walking, I was actually just thinking about the amount of schoolwork I was going to have to make up!' the teenager said. 'I was really just hoping my teachers would let me have a couple days when I got back,' she joked. Sunday Rose may have gotten her career started in fashion, but she has bigger dreams to follow. While she said she initially considered studying psychology at New York University, she admitted that her plans have changed — and might not be done changing. 'I have several interests that I am interested in exploring in college,' she told Nylon. 'Filmmaking has actually been my dream career since I was 5, so I hope I'm able to study that in college.' According to IMDB, Kidman has already made cameos in two of her mom's shows — 'Big Little Lies' and 'The Undoing.' She also voiced Lily and Isla in the 2019 film 'The Angry Birds Movie 2,' per IMDB. But when she's not walking the runway or working on her film career, Sunday Rose is shopping at her favorite store — which is what she calls her mom's closet. 'Oh gosh, if I had to pick one it would be impossible,' she told Nylon when asked to name the one thing she would borrow from her mom's wardrobe. 'I take everything from my mom's closet. I sometimes joke with her that it's my favorite store,' she added. In addition to Sunday Rose, Urban and Kidman also share a younger daughter, Faith Margaret, 14, who also appeared in the three films alongside her mother and sister, per IMDB. Kidman is also a mother to two older kids — Bella, 32, and Connor, 30 — whom she shares with ex-husband Tom Cruise, according to People.

"Angry Birds 3" Lands at Paramount, Sets 2027 Release Date
Yara Sameh The Angry Birds Movie 3 has landed at Paramount Pictures, which has set a theatrical release date of January 29, 2027 for the popular video game adaptation. The studio always had this date on hold in Comscore for a family event film. Game creator Rovio Entertainment and owner Sega are producing the threequel. "Angry Birds 3" sees voice cast members Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Rachel Bloom and Danny McBride reprising their respective roles as Red, Chuck, Silver and Bomb. New arrivals to the voice cast include Emma Myers, Keke Palmer and Tim Robinson alongside Lily James, Marcello Hernandez, Walker Scobell, Sam Richardson, Anna Cathcart, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Nikki Glaser, James Austin Johnson and Psalm West. Producing the animated comedy alongside Rovio/Sega are Namit Malhotra's Prime Focus Studios in partnership with Flywheel Media, One Cool Group and dentsu. Paramount Pictures has global distribution duties. Sony Pictures distributed the first two films. Released in 2016, The Angry Birds Movie earned $352 million globally, not adjusted for inflation. In comparison, The Angry Birds Movie 2 crash-landed in 2019 with global earnings of $147.8 million. In announcing the Paramount news, Rovio and SEGA noted that the animated comedy franchise has earned north of $500 million at the worldwide box office and has been a hit on streaming platforms around the world, signalling a strong demand for a third installment. The Angry Birds news comes on the heels of the jaw-dropping opening of Warner Bros.' A Minecraft Movie this past weekend. And Paramount and Sega have mined gold with the Sonic and The Hedgehog franchise. John Rice, who helmed the first movie, is returning in the director's chair for Angry Birds 3. Thurop Van Orman, who directed the sequel, wrote the screenplay. The film is produced by John Cohen, Dan Chuba and Carla Connor. Grammy Award-winning musician and composer Heitor Pereira (Despicable Me, The Minions Movie, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish), who scored the first two films, is returning for The Angry Birds Movie 3. Storyboards, art development, and animation are being handled by DNEG Animation. Jeanie Chang is the production designer, and Francesca Natale is the character designer. The head of story is Vadim Bazhanov, and the lead editor is Sarah K.
