CBS Sports predicts Michigan State football's first loss of the 2025 season

Who will be the Spartans first loss of the 2025 season? Brad Crawford of CBS Sports has an answer. Crawford recently released his projected first loss for every Big Ten team, and the Spartans' first defeat of the season is not all too surprising. Crawford sees Michigan State's first loss coming out in Los Angeles during the Spartans' first road trip of the season at USC on September 20. This is also the Spartans' first Big Ten game of the season. Here's what Crawford had to say about Michigan State: "The Spartans will go as far as Aidan Chiles can take them, as long as the defense holds up. Barring an early stumble, a potential season-defining Week 4 clash in Los Angeles could turn the tide for Jonathan Smith's first season -- though winning at the Coliseum won't come easy." With Crawford predicting the Spartans' first loss coming at USC, this would mean he believes Michigan State will open the season 3-0 with a perfect non-conference record. That is notable because the Spartans host Boston College during a marquee week two matchup from Spartan Stadium -- which I personally consider a make-or-break game for the 2025 season. MSU to travel more than 35,000 miles this season, ranks in lower half of Big Ten teams

How many miles will Michigan State football travel this year? It's in the lower half of the Big Ten -- which is a good thing for the Spartans. With the addition of USC, UCLA, Oregon and Washington to the Big Ten last year, one of the notable talking points has been the amount of travel for teams. The lower amount of travel, the better off your team is -- or at least that is the theory by some who cover the game. So with that being said, how many miles will Michigan State travel this year and how does it compare to the rest of the league? Thanks to The Big Ten Huddle podcast, we know Michigan State will travel 37,777 miles -- which ranks as the No. 8 lowest among Big Ten teams. The Spartans longest trip this upcoming season will be a road trip to USC in late September, and their second longest trip will be to Nebraska in early October. Luckily for the Spartans, they'll get a bye week between these two tough road trips. Michigan State TE Jack Velling ranked near top of Big Ten by popular podcast

A popular podcast has ranked Spartans tight end Jack Velling as one of the best in the Big Ten for his position. Both of the hosts on The Big Ten Huddle podcast included Velling as one of their top three tight ends in the conference this upcoming season. Velling came in at No. 2 in the Big Ten by Jon 'JR' Rhoades, and No. 3 by Zack Gugenheim. In 2024, Velling tallied 36 catches for 411 yards and one touchdown, posting a career most catches in a season. In total, over his three year college career, Velling has posted 81 catches for 1,130 yards and 12 touchdowns. Velling has received quite a bit of praise this offseason, with Pro Football Focus considering him one of the best returning tight ends in the country. Michigan State's tight ends tandem of Velling and Michael Masunas were ranked as the top tight ends group in the Big Ten by Tony Liebert of Bring Me The News earlier this offseason as well. MSU praised in recent anonymous quotes from college football coaches

MSU praised in recent anonymous quotes from college football coaches We are at the point of the offseason where everyone has forecasting opinions on the upcoming season, and that is no different for a number of coaches in college football. Athlon Sports College Football Magazine has recently posted anonymous thoughts and opinions on teams and other coaches across the country, which included Michigan State. The Spartans were recently featured in this segment from Athlon Sports, with the anonymous coaches' quotes being primarily positive for both this upcoming season and long term success under head coach Jonathan Smith. Check out some of the notable anonymous quotes below -- courtesy of The Big Ten Huddle via Athlon Sports College Football Magazine: Smith's approach at Michigan State Anonymous Coach Quote: '[Jonathan] Smith is applying a very steady plan here. They're not going to make a huge splash; they're just going to improve steadily. He's got a blueprint that worked for him at Oregon State.' Michigan State's outlook for 2025 season Anonymous Coach Quote: 'They need a lot of work on defense, specifically the line and the secondary, at corner, and the running game was pretty mediocre for them last year. But they've done a really solid job with transfers, and they're still building their high school recruiting out.' Anonymous Coach Quote: 'If you're looking for a most improved program this season, these guys might be it.' Aidan Chiles' potential growth in 2025 Anonymous Coach Quote: 'Chiles was doing too much last year; they made a staff change and brought in one of his guys, and I think that can help.' Thoughts on Michigan State reaching bowl game Anonymous Coach Quote: 'A bowl is definitely possible for them this year, and the roster is going to be better overall.' Spartans open as three-score favorites over Western Michigan in 2025 opener

Spartans open as three-score favorites over Western Michigan in 2025 opener See the opening betting line for Michigan State football's season-opener vs. Western Michigan Michigan State football has opened as a three-score favorite over Western Michigan in the 2025 season-opener. DraftKings has released betting lines for the opening weekend games in August, which included the Spartans' home non-conference matchup against in-state foe Western Michigan. As you would expect, Michigan State is listed as a favorite and it's by a sizable margin. Michigan State is officially listed as a 17.5-point favorite over the Western Michigan Broncos, according to DraftKings. For perspective and comparison, Minnesota is listed as an 18.5-point favorite over Buffalo, Rutgers is listed as a 10.5-point favorite over Ohio and Wisconsin is listed as a 17.5-point favorite over Miami (OH). Kickoff between the Spartans and Broncos is scheduled for August 30. The kickoff time has not yet been released, and I wouldn't be surprised if the opener is eventually moved up to Friday as well.
