'Spectacular' Netflix sci-fi epic that cost '$20m an episode' issues major season 2 update

Netflix have confirmed some major casting news for the popular series Netflix has issued a major update over its 'spectacular' sci-fi epic that reportedly costs $20 million an episode for its second season. ‌ The streamer has announced new cast members joining the next instalment of 3 Body Problem. The series is an adaptation of Liu Cixin's saga of novels. ‌ Netflix have now confirmed Claudia Doumit, who fans may recognise as playing the part of Victoria Neuman in Prime Video series The Boys, is one key addition. They will take on the part of Captain Van Rijn. ‌ In addition, Wolf Hall and The Serpent star Ellie De Lange will also be joining for season two. They are confirmed to be taking on the role of Ayla. Each are confirmed as new series regulars. 3 Body Problem was created for television and co-written by the same minds behind Game of Thrones in David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, alongside Alexander Woo. Woo has previously worked on the hit show True Blood. ‌ According to the show's synopsis, season one follows a young woman's fateful decision in 1960s China which reverberates across space and time into the present day. When the laws of nature inexplicably unravel before their eyes, a close-knit group of brilliant scientists join forces with an unorthodox detective to confront the greatest threat in humanity's history. Not many details have been released about the second season's story so far. The only thing confirmed is that events will pick up as the alien invasion nears, with humanity left to prepare on Earth and elsewhere. ‌ The first season of the drama series spent three weeks at No.1 and 7 weeks on the Netflix Global Top 10, where it reached the Top 10 in 93 countries and sent three songs from its soundtrack to Billboard's Top TV Songs Chart, including Lana Del Rey's 'Video Games' at #1. 3 Body Problem was received positively by critics and fans alike, registering a 79% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. One reviewer claimed: "Visually spectacular and a good cast — Benedict Wong in particular." A report by Forbes claimed that the entire show's budget was in the region of $233 million. With its eight episode season, that means the average cost of each episode is believed to be between $20-29million. ‌ Many fans still sing its praises, with one posting: "Netflix's The Three-Body Problem is one of the most gripping sci-fi shows I've seen in a long time. It's brilliantly written, visually stunning, and packed with tension that keeps you hooked from start to finish." They continued: "A lot of people seem eager to criticise it by comparing it to the books, but honestly, my advice is to forget all that. Don't go in expecting it to mirror the source material perfectly. Just let the show take you on its own journey—you won't regret it" Another added: "It has mind blowing and refreshing plot with a brilliant cast and crew. The storyline itself is intriguing , like aliens and AI, it was out of the box idea." 3 Body Problem is streaming on Netflix.

‘3 Body Problem' Season 2 Just Took a Step Forward

Netflix's dazzling and complex Liu Cixin adaptation 3 Body Problem was one of io9's top TV shows of 2024. After its first season, we still had lots of questions about what would happen next—there's the small matter of that impending alien invasion, for one thing—so it was good news when creators David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo confirmed two more seasons were on the way. But that was over a year ago. Since then, we've heard nary a peep about what's going on with 3 Body Problem—until today. Two new series regulars have officially joined the series: Claudia Doumit (The Boys, Gen V) as Captain Van Rijn, and Ellie De Lange (Run Away, Wolf Hall) as Ayla. The future is closer than you think. Welcome two new series regulars for 3 Body Problem for Season 2: Claudia Doumit (The Boys) as Captain Van Rijn, and Ellie De Lange (Run Away) as Ayla. — 3 Body Problem (@3body) July 29, 2025No character descriptions beyond those names as of yet, though as Deadline reminds us, season two will take place as 'as the alien invasion nears, humanity prepares—on Earth and elsewhere.' The first season drew mostly from the first and second books in the Chinese author's Remembrance of Earth's Past trilogy, though it adapted and altered the story to fit a more global canvas. If casting is hitting the trades, that must mean there's some major forward momentum on the second installment. When might we expect 3 Body Problem season two? Only Netflix knows, but we'll keep you posted as we learn more. Want more io9 news? Check out when to expect the latest Marvel, Star Wars, and Star Trek releases, what's next for the DC Universe on film and TV, and everything you need to know about the future of Doctor Who.

Prime Video is a one-stop shop for the best video streaming subscriptions

Streaming video on demand has revolutionized the way we consume movies and TV shows, allowing us to binge-watch our favorite shows on repeat or stretch out a new season for a slow burn. The problem, however, is that nearly every hit movie or show is tied to a different app subscription. When I just want to sit down and relax, juggling multiple apps just to find a show can be a vibe killer. Thankfully, Prime Video offers a unique solution that allows us to manage multiple subscriptions and view content in one handy app. When I hear the name Prime Video, I immediately think about what the subscription streamer has to offer in the way of original content. Hit shows like Fallout and The Boys spring to mind, as well as quick access to new movies that I can rent or buy and then watch at my own leisure. Prime Video has so much more to offer, though. My friends keep telling me I should check out Yellowjackets, available on Showtime. With the Prime Video app, I can search for the series and watch teasers for the show or even an entire episode for free. If I want to keep watching, I can simply subscribe to Paramount+ within the Prime Video app and continue my binge-watching spree — all without ever needing to download and launch another app or visit a second website. I might even get lucky and find a 7-day free trial waiting for me. If Yellowjackets isn't scratching the itch, I can decide instead to check out the wholesome Emmy-winning series Ted Lasso on Apple TV+. I can subscribe to Apple TV+ right inside Prime Video (and get a good deal with a 2-month trial run at $4.99 a month, then just $9.99 a month after that.) Prime Video subscriptions provide a unique opportunity to mix and match your content to your specific tastes. Maybe you're looking for your comfort anime and just want to binge Fruits Basket on Crunchyroll (available for just 99 cents the first two months, then $11.99 a month thereafter) or maybe you want to expand your options with a blast from the past like Vampire Hunter D on HiDive. Sometimes chilling out with a PBS Documentary or BBC Select documentary can help you wind down for the night, or you can spice up your evenings with a new romance from Passionflix or Hallmark+. Regardless of where your entertainment interests lie, you can add your subscription (or subscriptions, we don't judge!) of choice to your Prime Video viewing lineup and have even more access to the best movies and shows streaming has to offer. Subscriptions on Prime Video prove you really can have it all in today's digital entertainment and streaming landscape. A simple search in the Prime Video app brings up a near-endless supply of new and classic movies, documentaries, reality TV, and award-winning series that I can't wait to tell all my friends to watch next. It's all available in one neat little hub that is easy to manage, allowing me to subscribe and unsubscribe as my tastes and viewing preferences change. The Prime Video hub makes it easy to keep track of how much I'm spending on my subscriptions so that I'm not surprised by unexpected renewals. With all these great deals on add-on subscriptions, I can feel free to try out new series and movies without any obligation for a long-term subscription. If you're tired of downloading and juggling a new app for every show you want to watch, give Prime Video subscriptions a try.

Is ‘Sneaky Pete' returning for season 4? Everything we know so far

By Aman Shukla Published on July 29, 2025, 18:30 IST Last updated July 29, 2025, 11:19 IST Fans of Sneaky Pete , the slick crime drama that hooked viewers with its clever cons and twisty plots, are still holding out hope for a fourth season. The show, starring Giovanni Ribisi as the charismatic con man Marius Josipović, left audiences on the edge of their seats when it wrapped up its third season in 2019. But with no official word on a continuation, what's the deal? Here's a deep dive into whether Sneaky Pete Season 4 is happening and everything known so far. The Story So Far: A Quick Recap Sneaky Pete follows Marius, a con artist fresh out of prison, who assumes the identity of his cellmate, Pete Murphy, to dodge a dangerous gangster. By 'reuniting' with Pete's estranged family, the Bernhardts, Marius gets tangled in their messy, secretive world. The show, co-created by Bryan Cranston and David Shore, blends dark humor, high-stakes cons, and family drama. Over three seasons, it earned a loyal fanbase with a 96% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes and an 8/10 on IMDb. The third season, released on May 10, 2019, ended with some closure but left plenty of loose ends. Marius nearly revealed his true identity to the Bernhardts, only for Otto to stop him, saying, 'It doesn't matter, you're family.' Meanwhile, Julia faced legal trouble, and the Bernhardts' bail bond business was at risk after Lizzie's betrayal. Fans were left wondering: would Marius ever come clean? What happens to Julia's court case? And where's the real Pete? Why Was Sneaky Pete Cancelled? Amazon Prime Video pulled the plug on Sneaky Pete in June 2019, just weeks after Season 3 dropped. No official reason was given, which left fans frustrated and speculating. Several factors likely played a role: Shifting Priorities at Amazon : Around 2019, Amazon began focusing on big-budget blockbusters like The Boys and Lord of the Rings . Sneaky Pete , despite strong reviews, didn't fit their new 'blockbuster model.' Declining Viewership : While Season 1 was a hit, viewership reportedly dipped in later seasons. Amazon doesn't share detailed streaming data, but reports suggest Sneaky Pete wasn't a major money-maker despite being the second-most-watched original in 2017. Creative Changes: The departure of showrunner Graham Yost after Season 2 led to a tonal shift in Season 3 under Blake Masters. Some fans and critics noted a drop in quality, with Season 3 feeling less cohesive than the first two. Despite the cancellation, the show's passionate fanbase took to platforms like Reddit to express their disappointment, with many calling it one of Amazon's best originals. Is Season 4 Happening on Amazon or Elsewhere? As of July 2025, there's no confirmed Sneaky Pete Season 4 release date, and Amazon has not reversed its cancellation decision. The chances of a revival on Amazon seem slim, as the studio has shown no signs of revisiting the series. However, there's a glimmer of hope. In July 2025, Netflix picked up all three seasons of Sneaky Pete for streaming in the U.S., marking the first time the show has been available outside Prime Video. This move, driven by Sony Pictures Television's ownership of the rights, has sparked speculation about a potential revival. While Netflix hasn't announced plans for a fourth season, the platform's history of reviving canceled shows ( Lucifer , Designated Survivor ) keeps the door slightly ajar. Shocking cameos, new characters, emotional tributes: 5 biggest takeaways from ‘Gen V' Season 2 panel at Comic-Con

The second season of Gen V is all about leveling up. Fans of The Boys universe packed Ballroom 20 on Friday as Prime Video hosted the first-ever San Diego Comic-Con panel for Gen V. Showrunner Michele Fazekas and cast members Jaz Sinclair (Marie Moreau), Maddie Phillips (Cate Dunlap), London Thor (female Jordan Li), Derek Luh (male Jordan Li), and Hamish Linklater (Dean Cipher) answered questions from moderator and franchise star P.J. Byrne, who stayed in character the entire time as his narcissistic director, Adam Bourke. More from Gold Derby 'Avatar: Fire and Ash' trailer drops: Everything to know about James Cameron's return to Pandora 'How did It become Pennywise?' Andy and Barbara Muschietti reveal terrifying secrets of new HBO spin-off 'Welcome to Derry' Here are the five biggest takeaways we learned about Gen V Season 2 at Comic-Con. The Boys Cameos The official trailer for the second season of the spin-off series was screened for the crowd, with Dean Cipher's ominous quote, "You can all level up under the right amount of pressure," being of key interest for fans. The two-minute video also teased three shocking The Boys cameos from Erin Moriarty (Annie January / Starlight), Chace Crawford (Kevin Moskowitz / The Deep), and Nathan Mitchell (Black Noir II). Watch it here: Since Gen V and The Boys constantly "talk to each other," that means fans of Gen V will get to see how the country and the university have changed now that Antony Starr's Homelander has "taken over America," Fazekas explained. The spin-off will also explore "what the resistance is going to start looking like," including where some of your favorite characters from The Boys ended up after that fourth-season finale. "There will be some important cameos [and] answers to that." An Emotional Tribute Season 1 actor Chance Perdomo, who played Andre Anderson, a student with the power of magnetism, tragically died in 2024 at age 27 in a motorcycle crash. The producers decided to write his character out of the show, rather than recast him. Andre is alluded to in the new trailer by Sean Patrick Thomas, who has been promoted to series regular status for his role of Andre's dad, Polarity. "For Andre," he says through tears at the one-minute mark. New Characters Two cast additions were confirmed at Comic-Con: Zach McGowan's Dogknott, who gets taken out by Annie January in the trailer, and Ethan Slater's Thomas Godolkin, the namesake of the super-powered university where all the action takes place. Shameless viewers will no doubt recognize McGowan from his role of Jody, and Slater was most recently seen on the big screen in the Wicked film as Boq Woodsman. Leveling Up In addition to Dean Cipher's "level up" quote in the trailer, Fazekas teased more about that overarching Season 2 theme, claiming, "There's gonna be a lot of different types of leveling up. So, some people are going to level up their superpowers, and some people are going to emotionally level up, or figure out something new about themselves and lose control." She turned to the cast and added, "Yeah, you guys all lose control at one point or another." Top Cast Quotes "It is f---ing incredible seeing all of your pretty faces," Luh said. He stood up and shouted, "SDCC!" and then threatened to take his "shirt off" with Byrne as the audience cheered him on. "Should we do it? I'm gonna do it!" For the record, Luh ended up removing his jacket, which you can watch in the video below: Sinclair recalled falling "in love with Marie immediately" when she first read the pilot script. "They gave me dummy sides, it wasn't even real material, but she is determined to get into the school, and refuses to take no for an answer. She was super scrappy and kind of desperate, and I just really loved her tenacity from the beginning," raved the actress. Linklater was mostly tight-lipped about his new villainous character, Dean Cipher, the Head of Academics. "I can't tell you anything about him ... but I had one question from Reddit, which was, would my Dean beat the old Dean [played by Shelley Conn]? They said, 'You're gonna have to act pretty darn hard.'" The actor then joked, "I love overacting, so I said yes!" That's a wrap! Following the panel, Fazekas and the cast attended Vought-A-Burger, The Boys-inspired fast food joint, at Comic-Con's Sony Pictures Television booth. They won fun prizes playing the Gen V claw machine, and met with some of their biggest fans. The first three episodes of Gen V Season 2 will premiere on Sept. 17 on Prime Video. Season 1 is available to stream now, as are Seasons 1-4 of The Boys. Best of Gold Derby 'Five new life forms from distant planets': Everything to know about 'Alien: Earth' as new trailer drops Everything to know about 'The Pitt' Season 2, including the departure of Tracy Ifeachor's Dr. Collins Everything to know about 'Too Much,' Lena Dunham's Netflix TV show starring Megan Stalter that's kinda, sorta 'based on a true story' Click here to read the full article.
