Is The Conjuring: Last Rites based on a true story? Meet the real Smurl family that battled a demon in 1986
If you thought The Conjuring: Last Rites was just another popcorn-sprinkled Hollywood horror movie, think again. This spine-chiller is rooted in one of the most infamous real-life hauntings that paranormal power couple Ed and Lorraine Warren ever investigated: the haunting of the Smurl family in West Pittston, Pennsylvania. Before the devil made her do it, the Smurl family did It all started innocently enough in 1976. Jack and Janet Smurl moved into a humble duplex with their daughters. Jack's parents lived in the other half. Cute setup, right? Wrong. Things went sideways a decade later in 1985 when a ceiling light fell and gashed their daughter's forehead. From there, it was like Paranormal Activity meets The Exorcist, but in real life. Reality behind the story of the Smurl family The Smurls reported chilling screams, mysterious stinks, and even their German shepherd being hurled across the room like a chew toy. One of the most disturbing claims? Jack said a demonic entity had assaulted him. It was chaos, and the family was desperate. Enter the Warrens—Ed and Lorraine—the ghost-hunting legends who had just wrapped their work on the Amityville horror and were ready for round... whatever. The Warrens jumped in with holy water, crucifixes, and a suitcase full of exorcism gear. Ed told reporters at the time that the temperature dropped 30 degrees, a dark mass appeared, and furniture started going poltergeist-mode. Lorraine, ever the clairvoyant, sensed four entities: a gentle grandma ghost, a little girl with violent vibes, a sad dude who died in the house, and one demon using the rest as puppets. The Conjuring: Last Rites release date Hollywood may have added some spice, but the core story? Totally real. Jack and Janet eventually wrote a book in 1986 titled The Haunted: One Family's Nightmare. A TV movie followed. And now, with Last Rites hitting theatres on 5 September 2025, the Smurl saga is getting the full Conjuring Universe treatment. Jack passed away in 2017, but his daughter Carin still investigates the paranormal. According to her, their story was never about fame, it was about surviving the unexplainable and helping others do the same.

Real story behind final Conjuring film as family 'shared home with four spirits'
The fourth and final instalment of horror movie The Conjuring is set to hit screens in September, and here's the spooky true story behind the tale... It's good and bad news for The Conjuring fans, as it's been announced the fourth movie in the saga will be released this September, however, it's the fourth and final. The Conjuring: Last Rites will feature yet another real life case, investigated by paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. A first look trailer was released earlier this week for the final instalment of the film, which is inspired by the real life Smurl Haunting. The final movie is set in 1986, as the pair enter retirement. However, it's not much of a rest for the pair who find themselves brought out of retirement by Janet and Jack Smurl to investigate their house in West Pittston, Pennsylvania. The real life story started in 1973 when the couple moved into a house with their two daughters. However, things stared to take a turn when strange things started happening. Initially, it was only small things such as tools going missing and reappearing. However, things started to get worse when a light fixture fell from the ceiling, cutting their daughter Shannon Smurl on the head. Afterwards, things only started to get worse as the couple claimed to hear blood-curdling screams in their abode. Their dog was also allegedly thrown against the wall, and their daughters pushed down the stairs. Janet also claimed to have been picked up by a presence, while Jack claimed that he was sexually assaulted by a presence. Ed and Lorraine's website states that they "concluded that the Smurls shared their home with four spirits: a harmless elderly woman, a young and possibly violent girl, a man who suffered and died in the home, and a demon that used the other three spirits to destroy the Smurl family." In the chilling trailer, which has racked up over 6 million views in the first 24 hours, fans get a glimpse of the creepy dolls, and even Lorraine is scared, as she can be heard shakily saying: "Ed.... something's changed. Something's different," as blood can be seen pouring all over the kitchen floor. She can then be heard screaming as a voice says: "We've been waiting patiently for you..." Fans are sad to see the saga come to an end, as one commented beneath the trailer: "Watching it in the theatres is the last thing I can do to bid farewell to this amazing series." "Nothing lasts forever... but the impact that James Wan, Patrick Wilson, and Vera Farmiga had on the horror genre will live eternally," penned another, as a third wrote: "The final Conjuring. I never thought I'd see the day. What a franchise."

The Warrens take on their last and most dangerous case in The Conjuring: Last Rites, watch teaser
Warner Bros recently released the teaser for The Conjuring: Last Rites, which will follow renowned exorcists Ed and Lorraine as they take on their final case. The horror franchise, based on the lives of real-life exorcists Ed Warren and Lorraine Warren, has spanned eight films to date. This upcoming installment is based on the last case the couple handled in their prolific careers. The teaser opens with a scene inside the basement of the Warrens, and Ed warns his visitors against touching anything. You can see several artefacts that they have collected over the years, including the dangerous doll named Annabelle. As the camera pans towards different items, Ed says, 'Everything you see in here is either haunted, cursed or has been used in some ritualistic practices. Nothing's a toy, not even the toys.' Watch | Stick trailer: Owen Wilson seeks redemption through young prodigy in sports comedy series As the teaser proceeds, Ed talks about dealing with over thousand cases and how all of them were different. As the new family in question is introduced, Ed says, 'Anything can happen, and most likely anything will happen,' as we see another possessed toy. The Warrens seem to be talking about the case to someone who is interested in the story, and the movie will most likely be in the form of memories of that particular case. This becomes more apparent as we see a tape recorder starting up and cameras being pointed at a couple who seem to look like the Warrens, but older. There is a montage of different entities terrorising people, as Lorraine's voice is heard (presumably over the phone), and she says, 'Ed, something has changed; something is different,' and then we see her drop a locket into a sink filled with blood, and quickly the blood starts filling up the entire room. As we see more horrifying visuals, a message appears on the screen which reads, 'Discover why this case was their last.' The Conjuring: Last Rites, which is releasing on September 5, will be helmed by Michael Chavez, who has directed films like The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021), Nun 2 (2023) and The Curse of La Llorna (2019).
