OpenAI chairman says training your own AI model is a 'good way to burn through millions'
There's a scene in "The Dark Knight" where the Joker sets ablaze a massive pile of money. Deciding to develop your own frontier AI model today may be a similar exercise in burning cash — just ask OpenAI chairman Bret Taylor. Taylor, who has worked for three companies that have trained LLMs, including Google, Facebook, and OpenAI, called training new AI models a "good way to burn through millions of dollars." On a recent episode of the Minus One podcast, Taylor advised AI founders to build services and use-cases, but not new frontier models entirely. "Unless you work at OpenAI or Anthropic or Google or Meta, you're probably not building one of those," said Taylor, who also cofounded Sierra AI. "It requires so much capital that it will tend towards consolidation." That high bar of capital has stopped any "indie data center market" from forming, Taylor said, because it simply costs too much. Taylor advised that founders work with the AI juggernauts instead — which, it's worth noting, is something that AI giants like OpenAI, where he's chairman, would directly benefit from. OpenAI sells "tokens" to access its API, which developers can build into their applications and programs. While the American LLM market remains largely consolidated, international players have tested Taylor's theory. In January, DeepSeek released its R1 reasoning model and a corresponding chatbot. DeepSeek used fewer, less advanced chips to build its LLM, minimizing capital costs. The Chinese AI app shot to No. 1 on the App Store charts, surpassing ChatGPT and igniting a debate in tech and on Wall Street about whether tech giants were overspending on AI model development. In his podcast interview, Taylor laid out other paths that entrepreneurs could take in the AI market, rather than training a new model. One was the "AI tools market." "This is the proverbial pickaxes in the gold rush," Taylor said. "It's a dangerous space because I think there's a lot of things that are scratching an itch today that the foundation model providers might do tomorrow." Entrepreneurs could also try to build what Taylor called an "applied AI company." "What were SaaS applications in 2010 will be agent companies in 2030, in my opinion," Taylor said. Building a model from scratch, though, is a sure-fire way to "destroy your capital," Taylor said. He called handmade models "fast-depreciating assets," and not cheap ones either, costing the builder millions of dollars.

Lego Batman is returning to Arkham Asylum in a huge new set with 16 minifigures
The Dark Knight has risen once again, with a huge new Lego set recreating Arkham Asylum and all of its miscreant inmates and would-be jailors. Batman's love of gadgets means he's always been a good fit for Lego, with many different sets over the years, from a giant Batcave to a homage to The Animated Series, and even his own movie. Things have been a bit quiet on the Batman front recently, with no new movies to motivate interest, but as Superman starts a new DC cinematic universe, so it is that Batman has been given a major new Lego set, featuring Gotham City's psychiatric hospital for the criminally insane. The set is 25cm wide and 32cm high and can be connected up to other Lego modular buildings or left as a standalone tribute to one of the greatest rogues gallery in fiction, let alone just comic books. Included in the set are 16 minifigures, featuring Batman, Batwoman, Batwing (the son of Bruce Wayne's confidant Lucius Fox), Robin, and two security guards. In terms of supervillains, you've got The Joker, Harley Quinn, The Penguin, Mr Freeze, The Riddler, Poison Ivy, Catwoman, Scarecrow, Bane, and Killer Croc. More Trending Like most modular Lego buildings, Arkham Asylum is split into three sections, with a removable first floor, second floor, and roof. This allows you to play around in the detailed interior, that includes opening prison cells, a security entrance, and psychiatry room. There's even a van for moving inmates around in. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. The whole set is made up of 2,953 Lego pieces, which is a lot and means the whole thing will take quite a while to build. But it has a neat extra feature in that the pieces come in 24 separate bags, and the idea is that you can use them as an advent calendar, completing one each day in the run-up to Christmas. What you'd be getting for Christmas, if this was only the lead in, is hard to say but with 65 stickers, most of which feature references to obscure Batman lore, this is definitely going to please any fan of the Caped Crusader. Naturally, it's not cheap, at £269.99, but it's not out until 12th September, so you have time to save up or you could just pre-order it right now from the Lego website. Got a story? Outlander and The Dark Knight actor Colin McFarlane receives 'outstanding' honour
The Hollywood and Outlander star was presented with a special accolade Colin McFarlane, known for his roles in Outlander and The Dark Knight, has been honoured with an honorary degree from Loughborough University, reports the Express. The 63 year old British actor, writer, and producer, who portrayed the character of Gillian B. Loeb in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Trilogy, was recognised for his "outstanding contributions to the arts and his role in championing men's health issues" by the institution where he completed his studies. A graduate of Loughborough University, McFarlane earned a BA in Drama back in 1983 and went on to play the butler Ulysses in seasons four and five of Outlander opposite Maria Doyle Kennedy. The actor also later learnt he had an incredible connection to the Battle of Culloden. His versatile acting career includes roles alongside Liam Neeson in The Commuter, as well as appearances in Doctor Who, Father Brown, The Larkins, and more. In addition to his screen work, McFarlane is also celebrated for his voice acting, contributing to children's favourites such as Thomas & Friends, Peppa Pig, Bob the Builder, Fireman Sam, Hey Duggee, and even the Final Fantasy video game series. On the theatrical front, he has received critical praise for his stage work, including performances with Sir Lenny Henry in Fences, Sir Harold Pinter's The Collection, and starring roles opposite Corin Redgrave and later Steven Berkoff in Coriolanus. He is set to make his next appearance in the Doctor Who spin-off, The War Between the Land and the Sea, reprising his role as General Austin Pierce from Torchwood and Doctor Who. The upcoming series centres around the notorious Doctor Who villain, the Sea Devils, and features a star-studded cast including Russell Tovey, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Jemma Redgrave, Shanice Archer and Ruth Madeley. In recent times, McFarlane has emerged as an advocate, speaking openly about prostate cancer following his own diagnosis in 2023, and encouraging others to undergo potentially life-saving checks. Moreover, he is the co-founder of the charity Justice4Windrush, which campaigns for compensation for the victims of the Windrush scandal and legal recognition of their right, and that of their descendants, to reside in the UK. Upon receiving the doctorate, McFarlane remarked: "I feel very lucky to be able to come back and be recognised for the work I've done. It's a wonderful full circle moment." This is where it all began, where the dreams began. "My younger self wouldn't believe that one day I'd be in a Batman movie, work with Liam Neeson, become the voice of an iconic game show, produce, direct and write, be offered lovely roles in Hollywood, and make my parents proud." And the bonus is that this has given me a platform to help other people. That wasn't something that was in my dream, but dreams evolve. So, yes, it's very special to come back to where it all began. "He also delivered an inspiring address to the graduating students: "You're at the beginning of your journeys, and we need your generation to step up and make a difference. "Nelson Mandela said 'education is the most powerful tool we have to change the world'. That's your superpower. Use it, and you can change the world."
