Report: Woodson reaches deal to become Kings associate head coach
Report: Woodson reaches deal to become Kings associate head coach originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area Doug Christie slowly but surely is rounding up his troops to join him for the 2024-25 NBA season. Advertisement Mike Woodson has reached a deal with Sacramento to become the team's associate head coach under Christie, ESPN's Shams Charania reported Wednesday, citing sources. Woodson returns to the NBA after most recently serving as the Indiana men's basketball coach for four seasons. Before his time with the Hoosiers, Woodson worked in the NBA from 1996 to 2021 in various roles. The last time he was an NBA head coach was with the New York Knicks from 2012 to 2014. Woodson posts a 315-365 (.463) coaching record. He also has coached 46 playoff contests, holding an 18-28 record in such games. Christie took over as interim coach in late December before earning the full-time gig last week. He and new general manager Scott Perry wasted no time making personnel changes, firing top assistant coach Jay Triano and several other assistants over the weekend. Report: Knicks' Perry frontrunner for Kings' open GM position
Report: Knicks' Perry frontrunner for Kings' open GM position originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area The Kings appear to be zeroing in on potential general manager targets less than 24 hours after mutually parting ways with Monte McNair. Advertisement Sacramento and McNair agreed to part ways immediately after the Kings' 120-106 NBA play-in tournament loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday at Golden 1 Center. And with the search for a new general manager underway, former Kings vice president of basketball operations and current New York Knicks general manager Scott Perry is expected to receive strong interest for the position in Sacramento and is considered a frontrunner, The Athletic's Sam Amick and Anthony Slater reported late Wednesday night, citing league sources. Amick and Slater also reported, citing league sources, that former Denver Nuggets general manager Calvin Booth also is expected to be given consideration. Perry previously served as Kings vice president of basketball operations for three months in 2017 before he was hired as New York's general manager. Throughout his tenure with New York, the Knicks have posted a 293-337 record across eight seasons with four playoff appearances in 2021, 2023, 2024 and 2025. Advertisement Booth, who was fired by Denver alongside championship-winning coach Mike Malone on April 8, previously interviewed with Sacramento for its general manager job in 2020 before the team hired McNair. Whomever the Kings choose as their next general manager will have influence on the team's search for its next coach, although current interim coach Doug Christie is well-positioned to keep the job, Amick and Slater reported, citing team sources. Amick and Slater also reported, citing league sources, that McNair now could return to a front-office role with the Houston Rockets, where he spent 13 years before joining the Kings. Why former NBA players believe ‘sneaky' Kings can escape play-in
Why former NBA players believe 'sneaky' Kings can escape play-in originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area Programming Note: Tune into 'Kings Pregame Live' at 6:30 p.m. PT on Wednesday on NBC Sports California before the Kings and Mavericks tip-off. Immediately after the final buzzer, tune back in for 'Kings Postgame Live.' Advertisement Two former NBA players are convinced the Kings will walk away victorious on Wednesday night – and potentially could be one of the playoffs' surprises. Ahead of Sacramento's 2025 Western Conference play-in game against the No. 10-seeded Dallas Mavericks at Golden 1 Center, Chandler Parsons and Lou Williams each signaled why interim coach Doug Christie and Co. could cause havoc if they get past their first must-win bout. 'And by the way, the Kings are sneaky,' Parsons said to host Michelle Beadle and Williams on FanDuel TV's 'Run It Back' on Monday. 'The Kings win this game, and they can go and win the next game and get the [No. 8] seed. The Kings are rolling.' After all, the Kings won all three regular-season matchups against Dallas, who on roster and injury fronts, experienced a lot of turbulence throughout the 2024-25 NBA season. Advertisement 'I think they beat them one more time,' Parsons added. 'I think Dallas without Kyrie Irving, they have a huge hole to get out of. 'Anthony Davis, we don't know if he's completely healthy. They just went through so much this year, and the Kings, right now, are playing so good.' Like Dallas, Sacramento underwent a rollercoaster season of its own, characterized by the dismissal of 2022-23 NBA Coach of the Year Mike Brown after 31 games and the departure of star guard De'Aaron Fox to the San Antonio Spurs shortly after. Parsons, however, points to the Kings' offensive force and their roster depth as to why Sacramento will move on to play the winner between the No. 7 seed Golden State Warriors and No. 8 seed Memphis Grizzlies in hopes of a first-round showdown against the No. 1 seed Oklahoma City Thunder. Advertisement '[DeMar] DeRozan is rolling. Zach LaVine is rolling. Sabonis. They're just a better team,' Parsons concluded. 'They're just a deeper team. I think they get this game.' Williams echoes the former Mavericks forward's perspective. 'I'd agree. One thousand percent. Like, I won't even make it difficult,' Williams said. 'I just think they have the healthier team. They're poised to win this basketball game.' 'They're at home. And the Mavs have just been banged up all year. I don't think they have enough manpower to get over that hill.' Surely, Sacramento will take any support ahead of the season-defining clash — especially if it's coming from a pair of proven former players. Download and follow The Deuce & Mo Podcast

Kings star DeRozan fined by NBA for publicly criticizing refs
Kings star DeRozan fined by NBA for publicly criticizing refs originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area Kings star DeMar DeRozan has to write a large check to the NBA. The league fined the veteran wing $25,000 on Friday for 'public criticism of the officiating' after he blasted the referees following the Kings' loss to the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday at Ball Arena. The following was released by the NBA: — NBA Communications (@NBAPR) March 7, 2025 The Nuggets trailed most of Wednesday's game but rallied in the fourth quarter to beat the Kings, ending Sacramento's four-game winning streak. In the final period, Denver went to the free-throw line 13 times, compared to just four free throws for Sacramento. That difference caused DeRozan to unload on the game officials. 'The refs were terrible,' DeRozan told reporters (h/t The Sacramento Bee's Chris Biderman). 'Terrible as s–t. Simple as that. … 'Bunch of times we got hit, we got smacked. Three or four shots out there, clearly got hit, got smacked. They get the same call on the other end. Throws off our whole rhythm. Gives them momentum at home. Makes it tough on us to execute.' DeRozan undoubtedly knew what awaited him when he started criticizing the refs, but he can afford the fine, considering he's making $23.4 million this season. Kings fan keeps promise after Monk's turnover-free game vs. Mavs
Kings fan keeps promise after Monk's turnover-free game vs. Mavs originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area A promise is a promise, and one Kings fan stuck to his after Sacramento's fourth consecutive win Monday night. Kings fan and X user, @KingsCake__1, shared a post to the social platform formerly known as Twitter in which he declared he would buy a Malik Monk jersey if the Kings guard committed zero turnovers in Sacramento's game against the Dallas Mavericks on Monday. Well, Monk finished with 13 points, one rebound, eight assists, two steals and … yes, zero turnovers. Immediately after the game, a 122-98 Kings victory, Monk responded to the post with a gentle reminder. Go get that jersey brodie!! 👀 — Malik Monk (@AhmadMonk) March 4, 2025 But you know there had to be receipts for proof. And Monk seemingly gave his stamp of approval. 🫡🫡🫡 — Malik Monk (@AhmadMonk) March 4, 2025 Monk has taken on a larger role, primarily in that starting point guard spot, since De'Aaron Fox was traded to the San Antonio Spurs on Feb. 2. Since then, Monk was averaging 5.8 assists and 3.6 turnovers in 11 games before Monday's game in Dallas, and he was coming off a game against the Houston Rockets in which he gave the rock away five times. The Kings have been incorporating a lot of new pieces into their system, which explains some of the players maybe not being on the same page at times. But with Monk's turnover-free game Monday, it shows the guys are figuring things out and learning each other. The fan, who didn't want to share his name for privacy reasons, grew up around Elk Grove and currently attends Sacramento State. He was drawn into the sport and team because of former Kings guard De'Aaron Fox, but he quickly grew to admire the rest of the team, especially after the 'Beam Team' era was birthed. In a statement shared to NBC Sports California, the fan explained why Monk is one of his favorite players and someone he looks up to. 'Malik is one of my role models because of his drive and hustle,' he wrote. 'I love the way that he reps this city to the best of his ability and continues to push forward no matter what difficulty or adversity the team is facing. He took a smaller contract to stay here and play for us. His loyalty and determination to put this city on the map makes him one of my biggest role models.' Hey, maybe he should consider making a wager about a deep playoff run for the Kings. Who knows what could happen? Download and follow The Deuce & Mo Podcast
