Julia Garner Read Weapons Script In 'One Sitting' & She Loved It As Much As We Did

Minor spoilers ahead. If, like me, you like your summer horror flicks to be suspenseful with a touch of silliness, Weapons, in theaters today (Friday, August 8) delivers just that. Written and directed by Zach Cregger, the two-hour film focuses on the disappearance of nearly an entire classroom except for one boy, Alex (Cary Christopher). When parents review the security footage in their homes, they realize that all of the missing kids woke up and ran out the door into the darkness at 2:17am on the same night. With a community searching for answers, fingers point to their teacher Justine (Julia Garner) as the culprit responsible for a mystery local police can't even begin to solve. And as you watch, you'll be searching for answers, too. During the film's junket, Garner, who's been on double duty as she's also been promoting The Fantastic Four: First Steps, said that she'd never read a story like Weapons before. 'I read it in one sitting, and that doesn't happen often. It was like a real page turner,' she explained. 'I was shooting another movie, and I was like, 'we have to make sure that I have time to do this movie.' I really felt it in my every fiber. I just loved the script and Zach's work.' But unlike in Fantastic Four as Silver Surfer, Garner's Weapons character can't herald a damn thing. As the teacher of the missing kids, Justine is the default scapegoat. She cares deeply for her students, sometimes breaking the school board's rules by dropping off a kid at home who may need a ride. And her love of alcohol and sex doesn't help her case (because God forbid an underpaid girlie take the edge off). ' I read it in one sitting, and that doesn't happen often. It was like a real page turner... I really felt it in my every fiber. I just loved the script. julia garner on 'weapons' ' The local police aren't — and seem incapable of — solving the mystery. So to find her students and get her life back, Justine takes on the case herself. This brings her directly to Alex's house. But something strange is happening there that she just can't put her finger on. But after joining forces with a previous foe (Archer), Justine has a feeling that whatever is going on in Alex's house is connected to the missing kids. Her hunch makes her a target for something otherworldly that she won't be able to defeat on own. Weapons also stars Josh Brolin, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams and Benedict Wong. The story is told in vignettes, showing us the perspectives of a teacher, a parent, a police officer, a school superintendent, a drug addict and the one student who didn't run away. 'It's almost like a horror film version of Magnolia, but has comedic elements,' Garner explained. 'There's multiple stories happening at once. And, you know, everybody gets affected. Different people get affected by the same thing.' As a follow up to Cregger's critically acclaimed — and disturbingly twisted — directorial debut Barbarian, Weapons doesn't disappoint. Cregger takes a page out of Barbarian's book, building up suspense and disorienting the audience as he lingers on exposition. However, the film fills whatever space you have for your attention to wane with jump scares, comedic relief and enough pivots to try out for the New York Liberty. But the build-up to the disturbingly absurd twist — which is becoming a Cregger signature — is so worth it. The film scored a 96 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and is expected to bring at least a good number of folks out to see it. It may be hard to cut through a crowded box office space that includes The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Freakier Friday and fellow horror contender Together, but Weapons deserves a spot on this weekend's watch list. If you're thinking about going to see Weapons, expect a lot of blood. Expect some ridiculousness. And expect to throw all of what you thought this movie was going to be about out of the window. And if you're like me, expect to sit in the theater and say, 'What the hell is wrong with Zach Cregger?'

Kevin Feige reveals Miles Morales not allowed in MCU, 'X-Men' casting update and more

Marvel chief creative officer Kevin Feige just gave a massive interview last Friday, laying out details about what to expect from the future of Marvel and what he thinks went wrong with the MCU in the past (h/t Variety). Of course, "The Fantastic Four: First Steps" arrives this week, meaning Marvel was going to be in the spotlight this week no matter what ( spoiler alert: early reactions are positive). But Feige's comments are significant enough that they are a must-read for any Marvel fan. No Miles Morales in the MCU yet — 'We've been told to stay away' In this long-ranging interview, Feige covered Marvel's plans for the MCU between now and 2032, as well as what's gone wrong since "Avengers: Endgame." You may like For me, though, the headline was this — don't expect Miles Morales in the MCU. That's coming from Feige himself, who said, 'That is nowhere," when asked about the other Spider-Man entering the MCU, adding, "We've been told to stay away." (Image credit: Sony Pictures Animation) On the one hand, that's a bummer. Sony and Marvel have teamed up to great effect with Tom Holland's portrayal of Peter Parker, and "Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man" was a pleasant surprise on Disney Plus earlier this year. It stands to reason that they could produce similarly great stories with Miles Morales, who has become a fan favorite since his introduction to the Marvel universe. On the other hand, it's tough to see where Miles would fit alongside Holland's Spider-Man in the MCU. That's not to say it's impossible, and perhaps he could have been easily shoehorned into "Doomsday" or "Secret Wars," which are set to likely feature multiple iterations of the same character as the MCU careens towards a much-needed reset. But there's not a logical need for him to fill at present. Perhaps it's best that he wrap up his own story in 2027's 'Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse,' and then Sony and Marvel can assess the future of the character. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Mahershala Ali's 'Blade' still lives — but 'Young Avengers' might not (Image credit: Marvel) While Miles Morales might not be joining the MCU anytime soon, Feige says that two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali is still on track to play the titular Daywalker in a "Blade" movie. 'We didn't want to simply just put a leather outfit on him and have him start killing vampires,' Feige explained during his sit-down with the media (h/t Variety). 'It had to be unique. It fell into the time when we started pulling back and saying, 'Only accept insanely great.' And it ['Blade'] wasn't 'insanely great' at the time.' But while things are still on track for "Blade," Feige was less forthright about a future "Young Avengers" property. 'Potentially,' Feige said, when asked about a future story centered around Marvel's young heroes. 'In that case, it comes down to where's the best story and where is the best strange alchemy. Who would be fun to see them with? Each other, because that's what the Young Avengers are, but also mixing it up more.' A new cast of X-Men is coming (Image credit: Twentieth Century Fox) We already know that many past "X-Men" stars are returning for next year's 'Avengers: Doomsday.' Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden and Kelsey Grammer were all confirmed in an hours-long casting announcement. But once that movie is over, a new cast of X-Men will star in an upcoming untitled 'X-Men' movie directed by Jake Schreier (of "Thunderbolts*" fame). They may even appear as soon as "Avengers: Secret Wars." 'We're utilizing that ['Secret Wars'] not just to round out the stories we've been telling post-'Endgame,'" Feige told those in attendance on Friday (h/t Variety). "Just as importantly — and you can look at the 'Secret Wars' comics for where that takes you — it very, very much sets us up for the future. 'Endgame,' literally, was about endings. 'Secret Wars' is about beginnings.' Expect Marvel to go on the younger side for casting these roles, too, as Feige noted that X-Men stories naturally tend to center around adolescents. The X-Men aren't the only major Marvel characters being recast either. Feige indicated that Marvel will ultimately recast Tony Stark and Steve Rogers in the MCU — it's just a matter of when. Expect less from Marvel — because less is more (Image credit: Axelle/Bauer-Griffin / Getty Images) Finally, the biggest news Feige dropped in this press conference was that Marvel will be putting out less content — because it needs to. 'We produced 50 hours of stories between 2007 and 2019,' Feige said, when discussing how Marvel shifted from a focus on quality to a focus on quantity. "We've had well over 100 hours of stories — in half the time [in the six years since 'Avengers: Endgame']. That's too much.' It's this that Feige blames for Marvel's flagging performance. 'It's clearly not superhero fatigue, right?' he said, referring to the fact that DC's "Superman" is doing just fine at the same box office where "Thunderbolts*" and other Marvel movies have struggled. Speaking of "Thunderbolts*," Feige also blames the Disney Plus shows specifically for the movie's commercial failure. ''Thunderbolts*' I thought was a very, very good movie,' Feige told those assembled. 'But nobody knew that title and many of those characters were from a [TV] show. Some [audiences] were still feeling that notion of, 'I guess I had to have seen these other shows to understand who this is.'" Feige wants to steer away from the importance of the Marvel shows in the MCU going forward, at least in regards to how they connect to the films. 'I think allowing a TV show to be a TV show is what we're returning to.' Follow Tom's Guide on Google News to get our up-to-date news, how-tos, and reviews in your feeds. Why Was Pedro Pascal Recast in ‘Weapons'?

Pedro Pascal has been virtually inescapable this whole year. Everywhere you look in pop culture, he's there. It feels like he's starring in every movie possible. Well, everything except for Weapons. And that's not for lack of trying. As director Zach Cregger recalled in a recent interview, Weapons almost starred Pedro Pascal. Pedro was initially cast in Weapons in May 2023, right before the SAG-AFTRA strike began, but had to drop out after the strike put the film industry on pause for almost six months. 'Pedro Pascal's schedule threw us into turmoil,' writer-director Zach recalled in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly. Pedro was forced to back out due to scheduling issues—he is, as previously stated, a very busy man—and other members of the original cast followed suit. 'This is what happens, right?' Zach said. 'The strikes delayed us, and then when you delay, people's schedules get conflicts, and then you're back at square one.' Other members of the original cast included Brian Tyree Henry and Renate Reinsve, both of whom ended up dropping out as well. 'I bear no ill will towards anybody,' Zach clarified. 'We just kept getting delayed and delayed. It's like a domino effect. So I had to start over again.' The only original cast member to appear in the final Weapons cast is Austin Abrams. 'That's my dude right there,' Zach told EW. The director may have lost Pedro to the strike—and to The Materialists, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, The Last of Us, and Eddington, to name a few—but he did gain a brand new cast of A-listers. The horror movie now stars Julia Garner as Ms. Justine Gandy, an elementary school teacher whose entire class disappears overnight, Josh Brolin as a father desperate to find his missing son (formerly Pedro's intended role), and Alden Ehrenreich as a local officer. Weapons hits theaters Friday, Aug. 8.
