Mario Martone's ‘Fuori' With Valeria Golino Gets 7½-Minute Ovation At Cannes Premiere
Mario Martone's Cannes Film Festival Competition title Fuori had its world premiere Tuesday night at the Lumière Theater, earning a 7 1/2–minute ovation. From a script by Ippolita Di Majo and Martone, and starring Valeria Golino as writer Goliarda Sapienza, Fuori is inspired by Sapienza's 1983 autobiography L'Università di Rebibbia (The University of Rebibbia) and follows her journey as the Italian publishing world rejects L'arte della gioia (The Art of Joy), the book she dedicated a decade to writing. In particular, Sapienza becomes close with a political activist and repeat offender named Roberta (Matilda De Angelis). Ultimately, the relationship between the two women serves to inspire Sapienza to embrace life and joy once more, although those around her may not understand their continuing strong bond. The Art of Joy was written between 1967 and 1976, and published posthumously, and co-writer and director Martone's casting of Golino as Sapienza has specific relevance since Golino directed a six-part TV adaptation, which aired earlier this year. Elodie Di Patrizi, a singer and actor known as Elodie, stars alongside Golino and De Angelis, the latter known for the Sydney Sibilia-directed Rose Island (2020) and Niccolò Castelli's Atlas (2021). The cast also includes Corrado Fortuna. In 2018, Martone's film Capri-revolution was selected by the Venice Film Festival. Wes Anderson Teases Next Project With Richard Ayoade & Roman Coppola
Wes Anderson largely kept tightlipped about his next feature project other than to say it does 'have a darkness.' He's collaborating with Roman Coppola again, who the filmmaker always co-writes with, as well as The Phoenician Scheme star Richard Ayoade on the next title. Anderson didn't specify whether Ayoade was starring and/or co-writing. Ayoade starred in two Roald Dahl short adaptations of Anderson's: Oscar winner The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and The Rat Catcher. Ayoade plays Sergio in Phoenician Scheme, which is Anderson's fourth pic to premiere in Competition at Cannes. RELATED: Asked today at the Cannes presser which movie he'd be more apt to make a sequel of from his canon, Anderson responded with Life Aquatic. Bill Murray, who makes a cameo as God in Phoenician Scheme and who Anderson himself referred to as 'God' at the premiere Sunday night, was sitting in the press seats today. 'Are you in, Bill Murray?' asked the moderator, to which the Rushmore star gave a thumbs-up. The Phoenician Scheme opens on May 30 in NYC and LA with a wide break on June 6. Denzel Washington Gets Surprise Honorary Palme d'Or At Cannes Ahead Of ‘Highest 2 Lowest' Premiere
Denzel Washington got a surprise Palme d'Or honor from the Cannes Film Festival ahead of Monday night's world premiere of Spike Lee's Highest 2 Lowest, the actor and filmmaker's fifth collaboration. It is screening Out of Competition. The unannounced honor came after a reel of Washington's stellar career was shown in the Palais. The bombshell announcement was made by festival chief Thierry Frémaux as he addressed the crowd. 'It's a very special day,' he said. 'Denzel, because you are here, we want to make something special for you … it's a kind of way for us to tell you our adoration, what you have done in cinema. Nobody knows about that except Spike Lee, who wrote me to do that.' RELATED: Lee presented the Honorary Palme to Washington. Putting his arm around the actor, Lee said: 'This is my brother right here. I love him, I love him. I'm glad you're here where all the people love you too.' The reel included clips from his Oscar-winning turns in Training Day — 'King Kong ain't got nothin' on me!' — and Glory, along with such films as The Tragedy of Macbeth, Carbon Copy and his previous Spike Lee joints Mo' Better Blues (1990), Malcolm X (1992), He Got Game (1998) and Inside Man (2006). Highest 2 Lowest is Lee's 'reinterpretation' of Arika Kurosawa's 1963 crime thriller High and Low. Washington plays David King aka 'King David,' a hugely successful music mogul whose son (Aubrey Joseph) and godson (Elijah Wright) — the son of his best friend and driver (Jeffrey Wright) — are mistaken for each other by an inept kidnapper. RELATED: Washington has only attended the Cannes Film Festival once before for a film in the Official Selection. That was in 1993, when he hit town for Ken Branagh's Shakespeare adaptation Much Ado About Nothing. Along with his Best Actor Oscar for 2001's Training Day and Supporting Actor Oscar for Glory (1989), Washington has amassed eight other Academy Award nominations. He was up for Best Actor for Malcolm X, The Hurricane (1999), Flight (2012), Fences (2016), Roman J. Israel, Esq. (2017) and the Coen brothers' The Tragedy of Macbeth (2021); Supporting for Cry Freedom (1987); and Best Picture as a producer of Fences. Coincidentally, Washington's honor comes 36 years to the day after Lee's debut film, Do the Right Thing, electrified the Palais after its world premiere in Competition. Tom Cruise, who was in Cannes last week for the premiere of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, received an honorary Palme d'Or when he was on the Croisette for Top Gun: Maverick in 2022. ‘The Daily Show's Jon Stewart Mocks Media Praising Trump For 'Not Taking Cancer's Side' In Biden Statement
As Jon Stewart returned to The Daily Show, he took aim at the media's recent coverage of Joe Biden's cancer diagnosis. On Monday's episode, the comedian expressed skepticism that President Donald Trump wrote his own Truth Social statement wishing his predecessor a 'fast and successful recovery' as it didn't sound like his usual online rhetoric. More from Deadline Donald Trump Extends Wishes To Joe Biden For A 'Fast And Successful Recovery' Joe Biden Diagnosed With 'Aggressive Form' Of Prostate Cancer Kennedy Center To Include Non-Equity Theater Productions Following Donald Trump Complaints 'That's it? No exclamation points? No all caps? No insults? Whole thing's spelled correctly? It's really got all the telltale signs of a post definitely written by Donald Trump,' he joked. 'I look at this post, I wonder when they saw this post, if Truth Social sent him a security alert. They just sent him a quick message: 'We noticed some suspicious humanity on your account. If this was in fact you, President Trump, please reply, 'Nancy Pelosi's husband is gay.'' Stewart continued, 'But the fact that Trump responded to Biden's diagnosis with the most performa, bare minimum, ChatGPT statement, was so astonishing, even the corrupt 'lamestream media' gave Trump his props.' The segment then cut to news anchors praising Trump for his unusually civil behavior before Stewart roasted the talking heads over their selective memory of the twice-impeached president's track record. 'What he did was not noteworthy and important. Has any president—has any person, ever, had a lower bar to clear?' mused Stewart before mocking the reporters, ''I have to salute the president. I certainly disagree with him on many things, but I have to applaud that after hearing this devastating news about Joe Biden, that Donald did not take cancer's side.'' After Biden's office released a statement announcing that the 46th president has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that has metastasized to the bone, Trump extended well wishes in a Truth Social statement. 'Melania and I are saddened to hear about Joe Biden's recent medical diagnosis,' he wrote. 'We extend our warmest and best wishes to Jill and the family, and we wish Joe a fast and successful recovery.'
