Alexander Docks to be transformed into riverside park

The Alexander Docks in Winnipeg is pictured on Aug. 14, 2025. (Joseph Bernacki/CTV News) Alexander Docks, which has gone unused for over a decade, is set to be transformed into a riverside park. On Thursday, The Forks' unveiled the new design for the area, which includes gathering spaces, seating terraces, improved lighting, and dedicated ceremony areas. 'This isn't just about rebuilding a dock. It's about reconnecting to the river, to each other, and to our shared story,' said Sara Stasiuk, president and CEO of The Forks. 'The design team, with deep input from the community, has envisioned a space for gathering, ceremony, play, reflection. It will also be a place to sit, to talk with a friend, to share a picnic, to fish.' According to The Forks, the new waterfront park—located on the western bank of the Red River—will enhance the active transportation pathway from Stephen Juba Park to South Point Douglas and will include a new dock that will serve as a waterbus stop in the summer. The new park will also preserve the site of the memorial for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit people, with Mayor Scott Gillingham noting that the body of Tina Fontaine was found near the dock. 'Today we remember Tina. We honour the families and community members who have worked to turn this space into a place of remembrance and reflection,' he said. 'Now we are turning the page and looking ahead.' The redesign of Alexander Docks, which was shaped by public consultation, is expected to cost about $10.8 million.

Former docks site to become ‘lush urban oasis,' Forks says

It's been more than a decade since Winnipeg's Alexander Docks closed for good, and plans are now underway to turn the site into a riverside park. The Forks announced plans for the site Thursday, which is set to include gathering and recreational spaces and dedicated ceremonial areas. The site will also feature a new waterbus stop and a dock for canoes, kayaks and other watercraft. Also being preserved is a memorial for missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people, which has been in place since 2014. Family members and community advocates were consulted on this element of the new park, which began with public consultations dating back to 2016. 'Alexander Docks will become one of Winnipeg's great riverfront parks — a place for everyone to gather, reflect and enjoy the water,' Mayor Scot Gillingham said in a statement. Redeveloping Alexander Docks to cost nearly $11M

The Forks unveiled designs to turn the Alexander Docks into a park through an estimated $10.8-million project Thursday. The docks — located along the west banks of the Red River, off Waterfront Drive and between Steve Juba and Fort Douglas parks — were fenced off because of safety concerns with the structure in 2015. The revamped area would include a new dock allowing canoes, kayaks and other watercraft to dock adjacent to the Exchange District, The Forks North Portage Partnership said in a news release Thursday. The dock is envisioned to be a new Waterbus stop. SUPPLIED The area would also feature gathering spaces, seating terraces, improved lighting and dedicated areas 'for reflection and ceremony,' The Forks said. 'We are not just rebuilding a dock. This will be a new park that will restore beauty and joy to this part of the waterfront,' Forks president and CEO Sara Stasiuk said in the release. 'This team is rebuilding a place for people, a lush urban oasis for everyone in our community to enjoy.' Wednesdays What's next in arts, life and pop culture. A memorial that has been maintained at the site since 2014 is part of the design, The Forks said. The body of Indigenous teen Tina Fontaine — whose death sparked calls for action on missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls — was found at the foot of the docks that summer. City council directed staff members to study future uses for the site after it was shuttered. Public consultation on the project began in 2016, when the City of Winnipeg tasked The Forks to lead the project. 'Alexander Docks will become one of Winnipeg's great riverfront parks — a place for everyone to gather, reflect and enjoy the water. The Forks has a strong record of developing and managing outstanding public spaces that connect with Winnipeggers, and I'm confident they'll do the same here,' Mayor Scott Gillingham said in the release. Fundraising for the redesign will be led by The Forks Foundation, which has begun discussions with public and private funding partners. fpcity@
