Coronation Street's Sally Carman sets record straight on youthful appearance
Coronation Street actress Sally Carman has played Abi Webster on the ITV soap since 2017 and has been involved in several big storylines - and fans were recently left shocked by her real age Coronation Street's Sally Carman, known for her role as Abi Webster, has spilled the beans on how she maintains her youthful appearance. Since joining the ITV soap in 2017, Sally has quickly become a fan favourite, with her character Abi involved in numerous high-stakes storylines. Abi's life in Weatherfield has been tumultuous, from the devastating murder of her son Seb to her struggles with addiction and PTSD. Currently, there's buzz around Abi potentially having an affair with her brother-in-law Carl, played by Jonathan Howard, who made his entrance earlier this year. Off-screen, Sally celebrated her 50th birthday in May, leaving fans astonished by her age-defying looks. Sally has now disclosed her beauty regimen to The Sun, saying: "Oh, it's no secret - I have fillers, I have Botox, facials.... I do all of it." She continued, stressing her transparency: "I'm really open about it. I don't think there's anything worse than someone promoting a cream saying: 'Buy this mega-bucks cream and your face will be as smooth as mine.' I'm like: 'Yeah, whatever.' So there's no cream - well, there is, but there are other things on top.", reports Leicestershire Live. Beyond her success on Coronation Street, Sally also found romance on set, meeting her now-husband Joe Duttine, who plays Tim Metcalfe, in 2017. The couple got engaged in 2020 and were married two years later. Recalling their romantic engagement tale, Sally shared with Kate Thornton on her podcast White Wine Question Time: "It was while we were in lockdown and we were staying in the Dales with his sister, who has a lot of space, with, his kids" she explained. "And he had just read a Benjamin Meyers book called The Gallows Pole, which Shane Meadows is making into a film right now. It's all about these coin forgers and he was banging on about this bloody book for weeks and weeks and weeks." Sally continued: "And I'm like: 'I'm glad you're enjoying that book, I won't need to read it because you've literally told me everything that happens in it!' "We were walking around this big field on this walk and he went: 'Kids, have a look in between the dry stone walling because you know, they used to put coins and precious things to hide them in the walls." She revealed the magical moment: "So I'm having a look and there's this box. And I opened it. I'm like: 'No way.' And then there was another box inside. And I turned around and he was on one knee." Coronation Street is on ITV at 8pm Monday, Wednesday and Friday and available to stream from 7am on ITVX

UK Broadside Ballad Singer Jennifer Reid Releases Ballad Of The Gatekeeper LP
27 June 2025 Northern England broadside ballad singer Jennifer Reid has released her fourth album, The Ballad Of The Gatekeeper – a collection of songs that centres voices and stories not often acknowledged within the folk scene. Known for her evocative renditions of 19th-century broadside ballads and industrial folk songs, Reid's latest work weaves together working class narratives and contemporary edge, drawing deeply from the dialect and histories of Victorian and Georgian Lancashire. 'They may say The Ballad Of The Gatekeeper is a scathing attack on all that's right with folk," says Reid. 'But the theme for the first side of this album is, what did they know?!' 'I consulted with people who want to be part of the folk scene but feel they're kept out – those who have stories to tell but don't fit the 'traditional' mould. This album is my response, a rallying call to reclaim folk from the gatekeepers and hand it back to the people.' Recorded at the iconic St Katherine's Dock with support from Pete Townshend (The Who), The Ballad Of The Gatekeeper features a blend of never-before-heard traditional songs and original material. With added percussive accompaniment, layered harmonies and collaboration with singers and sound artists, there are some special contemporary pieces on the album which stem from historic material. Townshend encountered Reid through a Hard Art collective gathering at legendary artist, producer and activist Brian Eno 's London studio. 'Jen spoke about her desire to break down the conservative grip on what we still call 'folk music' in the UK," recalls Townshend."She calls those who cling to these rigid boundaries 'gatekeepers', resistant to change and the evolution of musical storytelling. 'As someone who still enjoys all kinds of folk music, I understood the need to make sure we continue as songwriters to write and sing about our communities and our working lives in new ways. But it wasn't until she began to sing, unaccompanied, her voice filling the room in a Lancashire accent, challenging everything we think we know about what modern folk music should be, that I became a true fan. Gatekeepers? Stand down.' Reid visited Aotearoa for the first time in April 2025, turning the heads of audiences at venues like Audio Foundation and Freida Margolis as much as she did those at trad folk festivals Hamsterfest and Tradfest. She is currently booking a return tour for early-2026 that will this time encompass te waipounamu. As an actor, Reid has portrayed Barb in Shane Meadows ' critically acclaimed period drama The Gallows Pole and performed at Chanel's Metiers d'Art show. She has supported Pulp, John Cooper Clarke and Eliza Carthy. ARTIST BIO Jennifer Reid is a folk musician dedicated to keeping alive the rich heritage of nineteenth-century music. She performs Lancashire dialect and Victorian broadside ballads, carrying on the tradition of using music as a social provocation. As an actress, Jennifer has portrayed Barb in Shane Meadows' critically acclaimed period drama The Gallows Pole and performed at Chanel's Metiers d'Art show. She has supported Pulp, John Cooper Clarke and most recently Eliza Carthy on an 18-date sold out UK tour. With a background in local history, she educates students and communities through live performances, talks and workshops. Jennifer's research has taken her worldwide, exploring connections between past and present. She has performed at the Venice Biennale, on the New York High Line, at Battersea Power Station and at the Liverpool Philharmonic. She will publish a book on her research into Bengali and Lancashire weaving songs in 2025. She collaborates with academic and cultural institutions, from the University of Cambridge to the Science Museum, contributing to stage and media productions. Her work has been cited academically in papers and PhDs. She sits on the executive committee of the Society for the Study of Labour History and is a member of Hard Art, a collective of activists, artists and leaders working for social and political change.

Upcoming Shane Meadows film a 'visual love letter' to Skegness
An upcoming Shane Meadows film will be a "visual love letter" to his favourite holiday resort, the acclaimed director said. Meadows, known for titles including This is England and The Gallows Pole, recently stopped to talk to local artist John Byford while filming on the beach in a video shared by Mr Byford online, he revealed the road trip film is called Chalk and tells the story of two girls travelling from Margate to Edinburgh."When I was a young boy from Uttoxeter we had a family friend that had a static caravan up at Ingoldmells," he said. "It was a council-run site, so a lot of my youth was here, and I've got nothing but the fondest memories of Skegness."The director said it was an "honour" to be back in the area and said it would be his "proudest moment" if the film could be premiered in the town. The resort was the first place on the map he wanted to start the filming process, he added."I never thought that I'd get to come back and film here", he said. "So I wanted to write a little, if you like, a visual love letter to my favourite holiday resort."The crew have been seen filming donkey rides on the beach and around the Byford described his encounter with Meadows as an "absolutely brilliant experience" and said he was looking forward to seeing the to highlights from Lincolnshire on BBC Sounds, watch the latest episode of Look North or tell us about a story you think we should be covering here.
