Reality TV Wades Into Cross-Generational Dating Pools
Age-gap relationships are nothing new when it comes to depictions of older men in TV and film plots. But a wave of recent releases, including 'Babygirl,' 'The Idea of You,' 'Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy" and 'Lonely Planet,' have zeroed in on romantic and sexual relationships between women in midlife and younger men. Two new reality dating spinoffs are now catching up. Bravo's 'Love Hotel,' which premiered Sunday, features three over-50 'Real Housewives' — Luann de Lesseps, 59, Gizelle Bryant, 54, and Shannon Beador, 61 — looking for love among eligible bachelors whose ages range from their 30s to their 60s at a luxury resort in Los Cabos, Mexico. (Ashley Darby, 36, rounds out the group of bachelorettes.) In the first episode Bryant asks Wale Alesh, 38, if he wants children. When he responds that he does, the cameras cut to Bryant in an interview filmed after. 'Gizelle doesn't have a uterus, so that means we aren't compatible,' she says, speaking in the third person. Meeting Jay Bramble, 46, Bryant explained: 'My three daughters are in college. I have the house to myself, so I just walk around naked.' He responded, 'You're living the dream.' Bryant, who is divorced and who dated the 'Winter House' cast member Jason Cameron, 38, on a past season of 'The Real Housewives of Potomac,' said it's important that audiences see mature women living vital love lives. 'Hey, ain't nobody dead because they have, like, jumped over 39,' she said in an interview. Bryant added that the program gives the women a chance to show 'we can spend whatever days we have left in a happy place with somebody that, you know, you really want to rock out with.' Several of de Lesseps's relationships and marriages were chronicled on 'The Real Housewives of New York,' but she said 'Love Hotel' gives her an opportunity to show that she's 'in the driver's seat' when it comes to dating. 'I'm not 20 anymore. I feel like 20, but I'm at a different stage of dating,' de Lesseps said, adding: 'I make my own money, my kids are grown.' Their attitudes reflect the fact that Americans are marrying later now than they did 50 years ago, for example, according to median age charts for first marriages from the U.S. Census Bureau. And the experiences of more seasoned daters are not often portrayed on most reality dating shows. ABC's 'Bachelor' franchise capitalized on that starting in 2023, when it looked to pair the 72-year-old widower Gerry Turner with the 60-and-up contestants of 'The Golden Bachelor.' The next year, Joan Vassos, then 61, searched for love on 'The Golden Bachelorette.' This summer, the popular spinoff 'Bachelor in Paradise' will feature 35-and-under singles from the original show alongside 'Golden' hopefuls, including Gary Levingston, 66, of 'The Golden Bachelorette.' The logistics of the show, and whether the contestants will be grouped by age, has not been announced, but the draw of heaping them all into the same show seemed clear to Levingston. Without age diversity among contestants, he said, 'you've left out a part of the market segment that's still out here.'

‘The Golden Bachelor' Renewed for Season 2, Led by NFL Vet Mel Owens
'The Golden Bachelor' will return to ABC and Hulu, with a new leading man in NFL veteran-turned-lawyer Mel Owns. After the inaugural season of 'The Golden Bachelor' broke ratings records for the franchise, ABC has renewed 'The Golden Bachelor' for a second season, which will debut in the 2025-26 broadcast season. ABC announced the news Tuesday during Hulu's unscripted event in Los Angeles. An exact premiere date has not yet been set. 'The Bachelor' spinoff series found its second ever 'Golden Bachelor' in Owens, a 66-year-old from Detroit. After Owens graduated from the University of Michigan, he was selected as the ninth overall pick in the 1981 NFL Draft by the LA Rams. After retiring from football, he became a lawyer in Orange County, Calif., where he focused on cases for those seeking justice for sports-related injuries. During his time in Orange County, Owens met his first love and had two sons with her. When his marriage eventually ended, he focused on raising his sons and coaching their extracurricular sports teams. Per ABC, Owens is now ready to rediscover a love rooted in the simple joys of companionship, and is seeking a teammate who shares this vision for their golden years. The news comes over a year and a half since 'The Golden Bachelor' debuted its inaugural season in September 2023, led by Gerry Turner, who got engaged to Theresa Nist on the show and eventually tied the knot to her on a telecasted 'Golden Wedding,' though the pair eventually divorced. 'The Golden Bachelor' scored an average viewership of 10.4 million across ABC, Hulu and other platforms in its first 35 days, ranking as the No. 1 most-watched season of an ABC unscripted series since 'The Bachelor's' 2019-2020 season. The next fall, ABC debuted 'The Golden Bachelorette,' which was led by Joan Vassos, who dated Turner on 'The Golden Bachelor.' With Vassos being selected from the women on 'The Golden Bachelor,' casting Owens is a departure from traditional 'Bachelor' casting, which typically would have seen a man from Vassos' season of 'The Golden Bachelorette' be selected to lead 'The Golden Bachelor' Season 2. Despite not finding a lead from Vassos' season, the 'Bachelor' franchise is still keeping their 'Golden' cast members involved, with 'The Golden Bachelorette' alum Gary Levingston and 'The Golden Bachelor' alum Leslie Fhima both set to appear in the upcoming 'Bachelor in Paradise' season this summer, which will feature a mix of 'Bachelor' and 'Golden Bachelor' cast members. Behind the on-screen drama, 'The Bachelor' franchise has been undergoing some shifts, with showrunners Claire Freeland and Bennett Graebner exiting amid reports that the pair was creating a toxic work environment. 'The Golden Bachelor' is produced by Warner Bros. Unscripted Television in association withWarner Horizon. 'The Golden Bachelor' Season 1 is now streaming on Hulu, with Season 2 coming to ABC and Hulu in the 2025-26 TV season. ABC's new Golden Bachelor is trading pigskins for rose petals. The senior-themed Bachelor offshoot has been renewed for a second season, TVLine has learned, with former NFL pro Mel Owens as the new leading man. The 66-year-old Owens follows in the footsteps of inaugural Golden Bachelor Gerry Turner, who starred in The Golden Bachelor's freshman run in the fall of 2023. (Owens did not compete in The Golden Bachelorette, which aired last fall and saw Gerry's ex Joan handing out the roses.) 'Now, after several years as a devoted dad, Owens is ready to rediscover a love rooted in the simple joys of companionship — sharing life's everyday moments, making plans for the future, and growing stronger together as a couple,' per the official synopsis. 'As the Golden Bachelor, he's eager to meet someone who shares this vision and finally find that perfect teammate he's been waiting for in his golden years.' Season 1 of The Golden Bachelor — a spinoff of ABC's Bachelor franchise featuring singles age 60 and over — ended with Gerry proposing to Theresa Nist, and the two got married in a televised special. Unfortunately, Gerry and Theresa split up after just three months of marriage. A premiere date for Season 2 will be announced at a later date. The Bachelor alum Joey Graziadei is in his lover era. Graziadei, 29, shared a heartfelt tribute to his fianceé, Kelsey Anderson, to mark her 27th birthday on April 17.
