Sperm whale hit by vessel, washes ashore near Seaside
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A 53-foot sperm whale, which was struck by a vessel, washed ashore north of Seaside on Thursday afternoon, days after it died, the Sunday. The adult male was first reported dead on May 23 about 15 miles offshore. Four days later, the whale was about 7 miles offshore. Once it washed ashore between Del Ray and Sunset Beach, officials were able to do a necropsy that revealed the whale died after being hit by a vessel. The whale will stay on the beach to decompose and 'provide a nutrition boost to the local ecosystem,' authorities said. The whale will provide food for turkey vultures, bald eagles and coyotes 'for quite some time.' Astoria police wear 'The Goonies' patches in honor of Oregon film's 40th anniversary However, people should stay away from the whale. 'Marine mammals may spread potential diseases to humans and pets,' the Seaside Aquarium said. Though authorities said the whale was an adult male, they did not provide an estimated age. However, these male sperm whales can reach 60 feet and more than 40 tons while living up to 60 years. Males mature around 50 with a length of about 52 feet. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. John Krasinski And The Fountain Of Youth Cast Said Indiana Jones Was Their Most Formative Adventure Film, But Eiza González Made A Great Point About Disney Movies
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. When The Fountain of Youth premieres on the 2025 movie schedule, I have a feeling a bunch of people are going to feel nostalgia for the adventure films they grew up on. So, with that in mind, I asked the film's stars, John Krasinski, Natalie Portman, Domhnall Gleeson and Eiza González, about the most formative films from this genre. While Indiana Jones was their most common answer, the Baby Driver actress provided a solid reason for why we should add Disney movies to this list, too. Growing up, adventure films like National Treasure defined my childhood, and Guy Ritchie's The Fountain of Youth feels like it could do the same thing for a new generation. So, when I interviewed John Krasinski and Natalie Portman, who play siblings in this movie that will be streaming on Apple TV+ very soon, I asked them about the formative action/adventure films from their childhood. The Office actor was quick to answer with some of the best action movies ever, saying: For me, it was Indiana Jones and Goonies and things like that. It was anything Steven Spielberg, really. But yeah, I think for me, this was what made me want to get in the business. It's that thing of you just wish you could be transported to these places and be with these people. And so to actually be in a movie that I pretended to be in when I was a kid is totally surreal. Portman replied by saying she 'couldn't agree more' with her co-star. Like The Fountain of Youth, both Indiana Jones and The Goonies tell the stories of epic adventures and fearless heroes. Indiana Jones turned out to be the most common film to come up among this cast, too, when asked this question. That's because, not only did Krasinski mention it and Portman agree with him, but Domhnall Gleeson also told me: We've talked a lot about Indiana Jones, which is absolutely one of the ones; I was just in love with the movie, the sense of the whole thing and their performances. And maybe, like, something like Jurassic Park. I was just a little bit into my, I guess, teens at that point. I just thought it was incredible. So, yeah, maybe those two. Truly, when I think of classic adventure films, I picture Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones first, then the dinosaurs from Jurassic Park, those kiddos in The Goonies, and Nicolas Cage stealing The Declaration of Independence in National Treasure. However, those are all notably live-action films, and Eiza González told me why some animated classics need to be included here, too. As I mentioned, when I asked this question to Eiza González, she took the road less traveled with her answer. While she mentioned live-action gems like The Mummy and Tomb Raider, she also noted that what makes an adventure movie an adventure movie is a story about friends who go on a journey and learn something about themselves and the world along the way. Therefore, we have to include some of the best Disney animated classics on this list, too, as she said: For me also, we think of, like, big, you know, The Mummy and Tomb Raider. I think Thomas Crown Affair is an amazing adventure movie as well, while being a romance movie. But we can't forget about Disney. Aladdin is an amazing adventure movie. Or The Lion King is an adventure movie. Anything that is like, go with your pals, find a meaning of the greater good. And, I mean, Disney does that a lot. And so I grew up on those, for sure. Truly, Aladdin, The Lion King and so many other animated films are also wonderful adventure flicks, and as González said, they fit into this category of formative film. For generations, these flicks have been watched by kids as they've grown up, and like Indiana Jones, they show us some truly epic and inspiring tales. Apple TV Plus: 7-Day Free TrialAlong with shows like Ted Lasso and Severance, Apple TV+ also has original movies, like the upcoming Fountain of Youth. You can get a feel for the streaming service with a seven-day free trial, and if you want to keep it after that, it'll cost $9.99 per month. View Deal So, when you think back on all the magical adventure movies that defined your childhood, don't just think live-action. Get those Disney movies in there too, and then let that reflection lead to a rewatch, I mean, all those animated flicks mentioned and the Indiana Jones movies are available with a Disney+ subscription. Then, on May 23, make sure to use your Apple TV+ subscription to tune in for The Fountain of Youth, an epic brand-new adventure film that all the actors mentioned are a part of.

3 Friends Followed Mysterious Clues to Find $10,000 Worth of Buried Treasure in San Francisco
Three friends in San Francisco followed mysterious clues to find $10,000 worth of buried treasure in a local nature preserve The clues — which were shared in the form of a rhyming riddle — were posted on Reddit by a team of anonymous treasure enthusiasts The treasure entailed cash, valuable metal coins and rare baseball cardsThree friends recently followed mysterious clues to $10,000 worth of buried treasure in San Francisco. Austin Theriault, TJ Lee and Erik Bahri saw a cryptic message posted by an anonymous team of treasure-hunting enthusiasts on Reddit on Tuesday, May 13, per NPR. 'Five weeks ago, we buried a $10,000 treasure chest somewhere in San Francisco,' the Reddit post began. The treasure hunt creators then shared four limerick-like rhyming clues, along with several photos of the treasure, which entailed cash, valuable coins and rare baseball cards. Theriault told NPR that he and his friends, who all work in tech, discussed the clues all day, and ultimately found the treasure buried under a bush in Mount Sutro Open Space Reserve after about an hour of physically searching. The PEOPLE Puzzler crossword is here! How quickly can you solve it? Play now! "It's validating to be like, 'I know San Francisco well enough' that we were able to find this in the first spot we checked,' he told the outlet. "The organizers did this as a bit of a love letter to the city," Lee added, while also speaking to NPR. "And so it's gratifying to know, at least for me, that someone who loves the city as much as the organizers was able to find the treasure." The friends shared photos of the treasure, which was sealed in a metal box, in a comment on the original Reddit post. The hunt organizers posted an update on Reddit on Wednesday, May 14, in which they shared that the treasure had been found in 'a mere 11 hours,' which was 'a lot faster than anyone anticipated.' While the hunt organizers wish to remain anonymous, they did confirm to NPR that they are a team of two people. They added that they were inspired to create the whimsical experience by movies like The Goonies, Raiders of the Lost Ark and a few real-life stories. They also revealed that they funded the adventure themselves using 'a non-insignificant amount of savings.' "It comes from a place of really wanting to do this,' one of the hunt creators told NPR. 'And if we could afford a hundred thousand dollars or a million, we would. Ten thousand dollars felt like the bare minimum entry to say: This is treasure. This is compelling. There's really something out there that's worth pursuing." The hunt creators say they would love to organize another treasure hunt at some point, and encouraged any 'deep-pocketed collaborators' to reach out if interested, per a statement on a website they created dedicated to the hunt. Gold in the hills: Mysterious treasure hunt promises $10,000 reward
It's time to go on a good old-fashioned treasure hunt! Follow the money: I recently found a post on the San Francisco subreddit, with clues purporting to lead to a treasure chest buried somewhere in the city. It links to a website, where an anonymous group sets out the mission: find the 22-pound treasure chest allegedly filled with more than $10,000 worth of gold, currency and San Francisco artifacts. State of play: The riddlers live in SF but want to stay anonymous (because "mischief and hijinx does live in a sort of legal gray area") and say everything you need to find the treasure is in the four-stanza riddle. But that's all they'll say. "A real honest-to-god treasure chest worth real money is buried, we don't want to give away its full contents, as the reveal of unearthing it and cracking it open is half the fun," they told Axios via email. What they're saying: "We're a couple of friends with a passion for treasure hunting," the group said. "The Goonies, Indiana Jones, National Treasure… There's a romantic allure to treasure burying and treasure seeking." "We love adventure and this was a chance to have one ourselves and create one for others." The intrigue:"Find a friend or friends to do this with — this is play and adventure," they added as a final word of advice. "And if you're using a jackhammer, you're doing it wrong." My thought bubble: I, along with plenty of folks on Reddit, thought this was a marketing stunt, but the group says there's "no book [and] no product" to sell.
