SWT Lyceum Theatre celebrates grand re-opening and honours long-time volunteers

The SWT Lyceum Theatre recently recognized its long-time volunteers and held a grand re-opening celebration, complete with a BBQ and a movie. On July 10, the theatre had a great turnout for the event, which included volunteer night recognition awards. The rain cleared up just in time, and the Gull Lake event started at 5:30 p.m. According to Cole Girodat, manager of the SWT Lyceum Theatre, the renovations were finally complete, and it was time to recognize those involved and put on a celebration. The evening began with people mingling and enjoying the concession inside, as well as a special event bar. A BBQ helped kick off the night, with nearly 180 of the 200 donated hot dogs sold, courtesy of InCyte Environmental. Cole Girodat noted that there was a great turnout at the theatre, with many people attending from out of town, despite the earlier rain. The grand re-opening project began about three years ago, with planning and fundraising taking place in 2022 and 2023, and renovations completed in 2024. These much-needed upgrades are the first major improvements to the theatre since the 1970s and include accessible bathrooms, a revamped lobby, and a new concession area. The theatre's management wanted to express their gratitude to their sponsors, including Curtis and Luke from Dawg House Woodworks in Hazlet, who transformed the facility. Other sponsors included InCyte Environmental, which sponsored the BBQ, Blended Souls Coffee and Boutique, which sponsored the volunteer appreciation and donated trophies, and SWT, which sponsored the mini fridge door prize. Trophy Towne provided the engraving for the awards. Girodat mentioned that the theatre, built in 1911 as a privately-run building, has been community-owned since 1978, with volunteers playing a vital role in its operation from the beginning. 'We are hosting this event to celebrate the completion of our renovations, but more importantly, to celebrate you,' Girodat told the crowd. 'We couldn't host these events without your community support.' He noted that while many individuals have donated their time over the years, the awards focused on those who have retired since he started in 2019. Awards were presented to several long-time volunteers, including Blake Campbell, who served 17 years on the board of directors, Deanna Service, who served 23 years on the board of directors, Phyllis Steele, a 23-year volunteer, and the Penner and White families, who have volunteered for 35 years. The evening also included an announcement that this year would be Cole's last as manager, as he steps down after six years. He reminded the audience that the theatre is always looking for new volunteers and encouraged people to share their memories and stories about the theatre. He also noted that the Lyceum Theatre is a licensed charity and relies on community support to continue serving future generations. The night wrapped up with a showing of the classic film 'The Goonies,' which attracted a lot of kids and helped bring in the next generation of theatre-goers. As the movie says, 'this is our time.' Josh Brolin Doesn't Seem Enthused About a Potential ‘Goonies 2'

Forty years have passed since The Goonies delighted audiences and captured the adventurous imaginations of a generation. In that time, talk of a sequel has never ended, but as of earlier this year, it's more real than it ever has been. Warner Bros. has, as of a few months back, hired someone to write a Goonies 2. And while many of the original cast members have been very vocal and excited about the idea, the group's elder statesman, Josh Brolin, seems much less enthusiastic. Brolin, who went on to star in iconic films like No Country for Old Men, True Grit, W., Avengers: Endgame, Dune, and Deadpool 2, among others, got his big break with a role in the 1985 Steven Spielberg-produced, Richard Donner-directed adventure. He played Brandon Walsh, a.k.a. Brand, the older brother of Mikey, played by Sean Astin. This week, Brand, we mean Brolin, spoke with io9 for his incredible new movie, Weapons, but we had to ask him about Goonies 2. We asked if the movie happened, and if his character is in it, would he have any trepidation about coming back? 'I would [have trepidations],' Brolin said. Why exactly? 'Because I love The Goonies, [but] it's been 41 years. Let it lay,' the actor said. He then paused and continued. 'I mean, no, I love the idea, but I don't know. If they made one with different kids, then it becomes a different thing, and I think it taints the original one. I think people get excited, and people who were in the original movie, they get excited about being able to work with that group again because it was such an amazing experience. So do I think it should be done? I don't know, man. I love it just standing like it does.' It certainly sounds like, if a Goonies 2 does get greenlit, it might have to happen without Josh Brolin's character. Which honestly could still work. He was part of the group but always on his own path, so it could be okay if he lived somewhere else than his brother, Mikey. And, of course, that's assuming whatever writer Potsy Ponciroli cooks up includes those characters. It could just be new characters and another mystery tied to One-Eyed Willy. Or something else entirely. But Brolin's point of view is certainly a valid one. Like he says, it's been 40 years. Maybe let it lie. Brolin's latest film, Weapons, is in theaters August 8, and we'll have more on it, and from him, soon. Want more io9 news? The Vegas Minute: Survive the Summer in Style

'It's … hot.' – 'It's always hot.' – 'It's incredibly hot.' – 'Why are we here?!' For the uninitiated Vegas traveler, yes, it can be quite warm in the summer (Koppen climate classification Bwh: Hot Desert, if you want to get specific) so expect temps to soar into the high 90s, if not 110s, during your summer stay. Of course, the city is fully aware of the sunshine and has many ways to cool off: A/C's pumping 24/7, frosty frozen drinks and treats around every corner and, of course, hundreds and hundreds of unique pools to soak in. But if you're getting pruny in the water, what to do? Here are three absolutely unconventional, 'only-in-Vegas' ways to beat the heat! Unless you're up at 5 a.m., you're not going to get 18 holes of golf in during your stay without some serious sunshine beating down. Instead, try your hand at golf in the miniature at Swingers. Located within Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, this wild take on mini golf features four 'crazy golf' courses, all surrounding a faux English country house. The courses feature familiar miniature golf trappings like windmills, as well as wilder challenges like jumps and loops. The family-friendly venue also features carnival games, Detroit-style pizza, delicious burgers and a delightful drink menu (and yes, some are frozen!). Best of all, the entire venue falls under the merciful layer of famed Vegas A/C, so you can wile out the heat of the day, having a blast and trying for that elusive hole-in-one. Of course, it's not just Vegas that is hot during the summer months – we all live within that extended dome of high temps that comprises the American Southwest. So, no matter where you go for a weekend escape, you'll be feeling some perspiration. Why not soar above it all? Flyover in Las Vegas, a unique movie-meets-ride-meets-experience, offers an immersive (and mercifully cool) way to see the splendor of our region. Hanging over a giant screen, you'll soar and move over stunning scenery from the West, including the Grand Canyon, Zion National Park and Lake Tahoe, all while feeling the mist, the breeze and the ups and downs of your adventure as your seat sways, swoops and caroms over the wraparound visuals. It's as close as you can come to being there, but one thing the designers edited out was the heat! Wait, what? L.A. has Cinespia. It's a very fun way to see a film outside – and L.A. gets cool at night. Why would you want to watch a movie outside in Las Vegas' summer? What if it's a 'Dive-In Movie'? At the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas' Pool District, fan-favorite movies will be projected on their enormous marquee screen overlooking the Boulevard Pool on Mondays during the summer season. As the sun goes down and the heat backs off a bit, you can settle in with your feet in the pool and a frozen cocktail to catch The Goonies (June 23), Despicable Me (July 7) or even Elf for a little 'Christmas in July' (on the 25th during a special Friday showing and a themed night with special cocktails and bites). You can even get fancy and rent a cabana for the all-ages event, but let's be real here – in the heat of the summer, why wouldn't you take in a fine feature film from the pool itself?

1980s child star talks 'Goonies' sequel, music career, and why AI threatens Hollywood's ‘magic'

"The Goonies" star Corey Feldman is concerned that the rise of artificial intelligence could ruin the "magic" of Hollywood filmmaking. In a new interview with Fox News Digital, the entertainer talked about his decades of being part of the film industry and what he thinks of it today compared to how it was when he was starring in beloved 80s classics like "Goonies," "The Lost Boys" and "The Burbs." When asked if he believes modern Hollywood can still conjure up the same "magic" that led to the creation of these iconic films, he said he wasn't so sure. "Well, I share the opinion that there is a lot of the magic that's been lost because of A.I., because of CGI, because of, you know, these things kind of taking over from the good stories, the great characters that we draw, the great writing," Feldman said. The actor, who recently marked 50 years in the entertainment industry, said how important it is for people in Hollywood not to let technology get in the way of elements that make good, meaningful art. "And I think that it's so important that we treasure those things, because we're coming into a time where A.I. is scheduled to take over all the creative ideas from people's minds right now," he said. "People rely on it for songwriting, they rely on it for music, they rely on it for special effects, they rely on it for story writing. I mean all sorts of things." "They'll eventually probably try to replace us actors with A.I. people," he predicted. "I don't think it will be long before all of that is tried." However, the "Stand By Me" star said he believes that an industry that's so integrated with A.I. technology will fail to resonate with audiences. He added, "But will it survive? Will it win? Will it have the same magic? No, it never can, because it's called the human experience and if we don't bring the human experience to the table, why would other humans relate with the project?" Feldman's decades in entertainment began with him starring in commercials as a small child. The actor, who is also focused on his music career – including launching a world tour later this year – said his musical talent is what jump-started his acting career. "As a child, you know, I used to have to go on auditions, and you know, when you're three-and-a-half, four years old, you can't read, you can't read a script, you can't memorize, you know, it's impossible. So, the way my mom thought to get around that was to actually train me how to sing," he said. "So I'd go on a commercial audition, I'd go, and I'd sing to them, and they'd go, 'Oh, that kid's so cute because he can sing.' And then I'd get the part. And that led to my first TV appearance," he continued. Feldman's music career has come full circle, with his new single, "Characters," released on June 22. He explained the psychedelic-sounding track is "actually both a tribute to The Beatles and a celebration of my 50th year in entertainment." He said, "It talks about really the many characters that I've played through the years. Obviously I've played a lot of memorable characters that people hold dear and near in their hearts, and you know, I always want to acknowledge the fans in some way, and I thought, what better way than to give back to the fans by creating a song that represents those characters?" When asked what he thinks about Hollywood today compared to how it was when he started half a century ago, he said it depends on your perspective. "Yeah, I think there's pros and cons. I mean, look, you can say 'the good old days.' And yes, they were, I mean let's face it, the eighties were easier, the eighties were simpler, you know? People played outside together and rode their bikes and went on adventures. And it was just a beautiful magical time. But, of course, that's because I was a child then." The actor added, "I think it's every generation that feels that way. I think that's just progress and I think that's the schedule of time. We all age, we all get older, but we also look back fondly at our earlier memories. I mean, let's face it, my life was a nightmare. I had a very abusive childhood. I had predators all around me. I had all that stuff I was dealing with, both female and male. So yeah, for me, it was a very difficult time. And, and personally speaking, today is a much better day." During the interview, Feldman also weighed in on news that "The Goonies" would be getting a sequel with Steven Spielberg producing. Variety reported in February that Warner Bros. hired Potsy Ponciroli to write the script for the sequel. Spielberg, Kristie Macosko Krieger, Holly Bario, and Chris Columbus – who wrote the original film's script – will produce for Amblin Entertainment. Feldman remarked, "And the big question is, we don't know what the script is, when it will be done, when it will ready, who's included, who's involved. Nobody's gotten the script, nobody has gotten an offer, so that's all we know for now. This is the 40th anniversary, though, of that film, so it's pretty ironic that this year is both the 40th anniversary of "Goonies" and the 50th anniversary of my career. Pretty wild." When asked if he thinks he will be reprising his role as Clark "Mouth" Devereaux in the sequel, he said, "I think that's the way it's moving. I can't tell you." Mentioning how the original cast are excited about the possibility, he said, "We would all love to see it happen and we would love to be a part of it. But at the same time, we don't want to do it if it's not right." Feldman noted they're pretty hopeful about the movie being a winner, especially with Spielberg on board. "I can't imagine Steven Spielberg doing it wrong. As long as he's involved, I know it's going to be magical. But that said, we're reserving, you know, any other opinion until we see a script." The actor shared some insight as to why the long-awaited sequel got the green light, saying he heard it might have been a response to the box office success of "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice," which saw the return of its original stars Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder. Feldman said, "Chris Columbus did say to me that he felt the reason why this was happening now, finally, after 40 years as opposed to any other time in history, was based really on the success of 'Beetlejuice' for Warner Brothers, because they had such a success with that chemistry, which of course was bringing the original cast back."
