'I can't be a second-rate Guess Who': Randy Bachman on starting Brave Belt and BTO
For more than 60 years, Canadian rock and roll legend Randy Bachman has been takin' care of business and working overtime. Starting out in Winnipeg with just a dream and a guitar, Bachman co-founded not one but two of the most successful rock bands to come out of this country: The Guess Who and Bachman–Turner Overdrive. Now, at 81, Bachman is looking back on his incredible life in music with a new BTO single, 60 Years Ago. In an interview with Q 's Tom Power, the guitarist and singer reflects on what happened after he left The Guess Who in 1970, immediately following the release of their biggest hit, American Woman. WATCH | Randy Bachman's full interview with Tom Power: "I was branded as an idiot in Winnipeg and in the press," Bachman says about his departure. "I got slammed in Rolling Stone and Creem and all the magazines at the time. [They said] that I was thrown out of the band because I was too straight. So I'm bent on proving you can make it without being bent or drugged or whatever." Bachman says his divisive relationship with his bandmates was more like a fraternal dispute. "You don't hate him, because you're brothers, but you have this thing you never get over." Starting over on his own, Bachman wanted to prove the critics wrong and find success in a new group — but he knew he didn't want it to be compared to The Guess Who. "I'm in Winnipeg with no band," he recalls. "I'm going crazy, I want to do something…. I can't be a second-rate Guess Who. I can't match Burton Cummings's voice. What I do is start over and do something different." Turning to country rock music, Bachman founded his next band, Brave Belt, with some help from fellow Canadian music legend Neil Young. "Neil said, 'This is really great. I'll set you up with Mo Ostin,'" Bachman says. "So I fly to L.A. and I meet Mo Ostin [at Reprise Records] … and Neil gets me a record deal there." Watch or listen to the full interview with Bachman to find out how he ended up founding BTO after Brave Belt eventually got dropped by its label.

Winnipeg's rock history put on the map as road gets honorary Bachman-Turner Overdrive name
A stretch of Winnipeg's Disraeli Freeway has been given an honorary name to celebrate an iconic Canadian band that helped put Winnipeg on the rock 'n' roll map. The southernmost portion of street, running off Main Street, was officially given the commemorative name Bachman-Turner Overdrive during an unveiling ceremony on Friday morning. Last year, city council's property committee passed a motion by Mynarski Coun. Ross Eadie asking for the renaming in honour of the band's contributions to the music industry, and frontman Randy Bachman's work "putting Winnipeg on the map during his continuing career." As the city officially put up the signs with the new honorary name on an unseasonably cold morning, the celebrated guitarist offered thanks for "the very appropriate weather." "It's the reason I left Winnipeg," said Bachman, laughing. "But I love coming back.… It was great growing up here. Rock 'n' roll was great," said Bachman, who rose to fame in the 1960s as the guitarist with another famed Winnipeg band, The Guess Who, before going on to form Bachman-Turner Overdrive in the city in 1973 with his brothers, Robbie and Tim Bachman, along with Fred Turner. Another Bachman brother, Gary, managed the band in its early days. The band, inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2014, produced hits such as Takin' Care of Business and You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet. As he thanked the city for the honorary renaming, Randy Bachman paid tribute to his brothers — Tim and Robbie, who died just a few months apart in 2023, and Gary, who died in 2020. "Gary Bachman, Tim, Robbie.… They're gone, but this will live on," Bachman said. Band member Fred Turner was also on hand for the ceremony. "I didn't think this would ever happen, to tell you the truth," he said. "I can't tell you what it means … especially because I came home." Winnipeg's music scene, Turner said, has always been filled with talented artists, a spawning ground that gave his band the tools to take their songs to an international stage. "When I was a kid, I hoped. It was always a dream to do this," said Turner. "How many people have a childhood dream that becomes real?" Matt Derraugh, a born and raised Winnipeg drummer and Bachman–Turner Overdrive fan who attended Friday's public ceremony, said the band laid the groundwork for performers like him. "Just seeing where they took [their music] to … and how far you can take it to, that is definitely an inspiring piece," he said. The band's records encapsulated Winnipeg's "grit and grime," Derraugh said, capturing its essence in their lyrics. "The great heritage of music, what we have here in BTO, is absolutely an essential part of that, and it's essential for me," Derraugh said. Like Derraugh, BTO formed part of the soundtrack of Ronnie Ladobruk's childhood. The Winnipeg guitarist, who was at the unveiling ceremony, studied the band's record to learn how to play and create his own music. "Freddy's voice, Randy's voice, the guitar playing, the bass, drumming — everything is just incredible," he said. "It's next level. It's powerful." He said the honorary name brings a sense of pride, as well as a reminder of how much can be accomplished when someone dedicates their life to their craft, like BTO did. "It's very inspiring to see them recognized," he said. "They set the bar and they set the road, and we walk down it. We try to forge our own names and our own road," he said. "You can see what's possible if you just keep going."

A US jaunt will follow in July and August, with tickets available here. Get Bachman-Turner Overdrive Tickets Here It's been a rough couple years for BTO, as classic members Robbie Bachman (drums) and Tim Bachman (guitar) died within a few months of each other in 2023. Singer-guitarist Randy Bachman recruited a couple of family members to record the new song, including his son Tal Bachman (an established singer-songwriter himself) and Tal's wife, Koko Bachman (drums), along with classic BTO member Fred Turner on vocals and the aforementioned solo from Neil Young. 'As a thank-you to Winnipeg, the city that shaped us, I wrote a song called '60 Years Ago.'' stated Randy in ap press release. 'It features Tal Bachman, KoKo Bachman, and me, with Fred Turner on vocals, and features an incredible guitar solo from Neil Young.' He added, 'This song is our tribute to Winnipeg, the place where we grew up as teenagers in the '60s, a time when the city's music scene was exploding. It was the Liverpool of North America, a melting pot of incredible talents. Everyone I've talked to who spent time in Winnipeg and witnessed that musical explosion is excited to hear this song, and I hope you all enjoy it as much as we enjoyed creating it.' As for the touring lineup, it will include Randy, Tal, and Koko, along with Lance Lapointe on bass and Brent Knudsen on guitar. 'We sound better than ever, enthused Randy. 'We're playing all the hits, as well as diving deep into the album cuts, and the response from fans has been incredible. We can't wait to tour Canada in April and May and show off this powerhouse lineup. The BTO sound is BACK!!' In addition to hitting the road with BTO, Randy also recently told American Songwriter that he and Burton Cummings are planning to reunite The Guess Who in 2026. '[Burton is] finishing up his stuff this year, I'm finishing up my BTO stuff,' remarked Randy. 'And we have a plan for 2026 to be The Guess Who, where … we do a set list of about 30 hit songs, and it's probably gonna be a two- or three-hour Springsteen kind of marathonic show.'
