Is it cheating if no sex is involved? Novel explores the nuances of emotional infidelity

Seduction Theory by Emily Adrian is brimming with gimlet-eyed humour and deadpan coolness, and delivers a writing masterclass in one scene where a phone-sex session doesn't quite go to plan From Chris Kraus' I Love Dick and Susan Choi's My Education to Elif Batuman's The Idiot, campus novels hold plenty of appeal, and for good reason. They are self-contained environments with their own rules and social dynamics. Its inhabitants are young, idealistic and fresh off the leash. Its older denizens – staff, academics, lecturers – are often intellectuals stuck in a sort-of adolescence. Elite campuses in particular are ripe for satire. Into this canon now comes Emily Adrian's observant and playful novel Seduction Theory; her third novel for adults (the New Haven-based author has also written two Young Adult novels). Kaufman's 2021 novel The Gambler Wife: A True Story of Love, Risk, and the Woman Who Saved Dostoyevsky, which follows the lives of the famous Russian writer Fyodor Dostoyevsky and his wife Anna during a period that inspired him to write his classic The Idiot. Wood and Flynn play Anna and her husband, nicknamed Fiedya. The couple is on a honeymoon trip to Western Europe, but Dostoyevsky's gambling addiction threatens to ruin them both. It's only with the help of his courageous wife that the pair can pursue their joint vision of writing The Idiot, a book that was a commercial failure at the time but is now recognized as a literary masterpiece. Ilya Stewart and Vladimir Zemtsov are producing The Idiots for Hype Studios and Gold Rush Pictures. Production is set to begin next month. The Match Factory are handling international sales.
