The Indo Daily: Rugby stars, Leaving Cert grinds, lewd jokes and a High Court case
The private grinds industry in Ireland is booming, and is estimated to be worth between €50-€60m. Investors, including well-known names like Brian O'Driscoll and Caelan Doris, have been keen to get in on the action, as the pair did when they helped fund hybrid learning platform Grinds 360 last year. But the competition in the grinds world can be just as intense as it is on the rugby pitch, and sometimes notably bitter. Take the case of respected maths teacher Rob Browne, whose high-profile transfer from the Dublin Academy of Education to Grinds 360 led to a contentious dispute that landed in the High Court where, among other things, a lewd joke made on TikTok was under scrutiny. On this episode of The Indo Daily, host Kevin Doyle is joined by Sunday Independent journalist Mark Tighe, to discuss this unusual legal battle.

The Indo Daily: Carlow gun attack- How a wave of disinformation spread like wildfire
Mass panic ensued as shoppers fled for their lives. In the chaos, a nine-year-old girl sustained minor injuries after falling while trying to escape. The shooter, later identified as 22-year-old Evan Fitzgerald, took his own life. While gardaí and journalists worked to establish the facts, social media was already ablaze with rumour, speculation and innuendo. The shooting offered an opportunity to spread disinformation, as false claims about the suspect's ethnicity and the number and nature of casualties spread like wildfire. Later, gardaí took the near-unprecedented approach of informing the public that the suspect was a 'white Irish adult'. Why did the authorities take this step? And who gains from causing online confusion? On this episode on The Indo Daily, host Kevin Doyle is joined by Maeve McTaggart, multimedia reporter with the Irish Independent, and by Conor Feehan, senior journalist with the Irish Independent, to look at the challenges in reporting breaking news when dangerous mistruths have already grown legs. The Indo Daily: Extra: ‘A monster' – Richard Satchwell sentenced to life in prison as Tina's family speak in court
Mr Justice Paul McDermott imposed the mandatory sentence of life imprisonment on the English truck driver at the Central Criminal Court as Ms Satchwell's Cork family said they will never forgive him for the nightmare he inflicted on them over almost seven years. 'There is only one sentence a judge is required to apply which is a sentence of life imprisonment. I date the sentence back to October 12, 2023,' the judge said. Lorraine Howard, Tina's half-sister said she could never forgive the truck driver for what he had done to the woman he professed to have loved. She claimed he showed more respect to their pet dog for its burial and had even taken the rubble from his wife's secret grave and scattered it around the places in Youghal they loved. 'I am Tina's sister, myself and Tina were inseparable growing up,' she said. 'We always had each other's backs. As long as I can remember Tina loved animals. She hated to see any animal neglected. She was so kindhearted.' 'I am so thankful that the jury saw through his despicable lies. 'We have so many happy memories of Tina. I feel Tina is with us. 'That monster took Tina from us." Today on this extra episode of The Indo Daily, Fionnán Sheahan is joined by Ralph Riegel, Southern Correspondent with The Irish Independent, to reflect on this final day in court, the sentence handed down to Richard Satchwell and whether this is the final chapter in this sinister case.

The Indo Daily: 'Controlling and odd': What the court heard about Richard Satchwell from Tina's family
For six years, her husband insists she left of her own accord. That she needed space. That she was, in his own words, his 'trophy wife'. Those were comments that her family did not like. This week in the Richard Satchwell trial, Tina's half-sister Lorraine took to the stand to describe the accused as 'controlling and odd'. Her testimony shone a light on Tina's family and Tina's relationship with her husband Richard. Today on The Indo Daily, Fionnán Sheahan is joined by Ralph Riegel, Southern Correspondent with the Irish Independent, to hear evidence from Tina Satchwell's family as her husband stands accused of her murder. Could Richard Satchwell be called to the stand to give evidence? 'Controlling and odd': What the court heard about Richard Satchwell from Tina's family
