The Last of Us is over. Here are 5 more movies and TV shows to watch based on video games

HBO's hit adaptation of The Last of Us has finally reached the end of its second season, meaning that fans of the show will likely try to fill the void as they wait for season 3. Some may be looking to watch other top-tier adaptations of their favorite video games, which might be a challenge. For many years before The Last of Us, the film and television industries have struggled to develop high-quality adaptations of beloved video games. However, in recent years, there has been a growing number of film and TV adaptations like The Last of Us that respect and even build upon the source material. While the world holds its breath for The Last of Us season 3, here's a guide to five must-see movies and TV shows based on video games. Recommended Videos Need more recommendations? Then check out the best new shows to stream this week, as well as the best shows on Netflix, the best shows on Hulu, the best shows on Amazon Prime Video, the best shows on Max, and the best shows on Disney+. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners (2022) While Cyberpunk 2077 garnered controversy upon its release, one of the most notable outcomes was the creation of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. The animated series follows David, a gifted teenager from Night City who resorts to a life of crime with the aid of cybernetic implants to make ends meet after his mother's death. Though David and his friends dream of making it big and escaping from their bleak lives in Night City, this thrilling sci-fi series depicts the harsh and timely realities of their world that they struggle to break free from, including violent gangs, sinister corporations, and addictive technology. Stream Cyberpunk: Edgerunners on Netflix. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024) Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is far more kid-friendly than The Last of Us (which should be refreshing to some viewers). However, the third movie is much darker than the previous Sonic films thanks to Shadow the Hedgehog, a character exceptionally voiced by Keanu Reeves. Much like Ellie, Shadow's life is marked by loss, grief, and a desire for revenge, and his conflict with Sonic brings out the darkness in the Blue Blur himself. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 leaves plenty of room for lighthearted humor in its tale of revenge, especially with Jim Carrey playing two Doctor Robotniks. It also features some spectacular anime-style action carried out by its superpowered hedgehogs, making it the most faithful and thrilling Sonic film yet. Stream Sonic the Hedgehog 3 on Paramount+. Castlevania (2017-2021) Long before The Last of Us hit HBO, Netflix showed how video game adaptations could be taken seriously with Castlevania. This animated hit depicts the hellish war between humans and vampires unleashed by Dracula (Graham McTavish) after his human wife is burned at the stake. Similar to The Last of Us, Castlevania portrays characters searching for meaning and happiness in a bleak world while battling monsters, both human and undead. Such a dark and bold series delves into heavy issues of religious oppression, grief, and depression, all while delivering some of the most compelling characters ever seen in a video game adaptation. On top of that, the action is thrilling, the animation is breathtaking, and the voice acting is music to the ears. Stream Castlevania on Netflix. Arcane (2021-2024) Based on League of Legends, Arcane is a mature animated series centered around sisters Vi (Hailee Steinfeld) and Jinx (Ella Purnell), who ultimately turn on each other while caught up in the violent war between two cities. Both Arcane and The Last of Us explore the cycle of violence that unfolds in a world seemingly determined to destroy itself, while also telling a story about finding love in the unlikeliest of places. Also, with incredible voice acting and animation on par with the Spider-Verse films, Arcane delivered a dazzling and immersive video game adaptation in a league of its own. Stream Arcane on Netflix. Fallout (2024-present) Prime Video's Fallout follows Lucy (Ella Purnell), who, after living in an underground bunker her whole life, ventures out into the radioactive wasteland to rescue her father from raiders. Like The Last of Us, this vast and dense series takes place in a post-apocalyptic version of America filled with monsters, albeit one created by a nuclear war. The show's characters face several horrors and dark truths about the world they once knew and the people they love. However, Fallout takes a more comedic approach to its dark, sprawling story. As the naive Lucy and her allies face a world plagued by vicious marauders, horrific 'ghouls,' and evil corporations, the upbeat fantasy fed to her and the other Vault dwellers burns away in a haunting satire of American society at the height of the Atomic Age. This all makes for a bold, thrilling, but enjoyable dystopian drama that does justice to its acclaimed source material. Stream Fallout on Prime Video.

A Death Stranding anime is in the works

How much Death Stranding are you willing to fire into your eyes? The game's sequel arrives in just a few weeks, A Quiet Place: Day One director Michael Sarnoski is leading up a live-action film adaptation, and now Hideo Kojima has confirmed that an anime is in production. Kojima teased the adaptation while discussing the more concrete live-action project in an interview with Vogue Japan . As picked up by VGC , the Metal Gear creator was talking about his cross-media ambitions for the Death Stranding , and comparing the planned film to other successful video game adaptations from recent years. "When it comes to adapting games into visual media, there are works like The Last of Us , which stays true to the original storyline, and films like The Super Mario Bros Movie which are more of a service to fans of the game," Kojima said, according to VGC 's translation. "While these works have their own merits, as a film enthusiast, I want to pursue the expressive potential of cinema. I aim to create a Death Stranding that can only be realised through film, one that could win awards at festivals like the Cannes Film Festival or the Venice Film Festival. In fact, we are also currently working on an anime adaptation." Kojima didn't offer any more information, so we don't know how far along the anime project is, who is making it, when we can actually expect it to come out, or whether it will tie in with the upcoming live-action movie. In the meantime, Norman Reedus' Sam Porter Bridges will return in Death Stranding 2: On the Beach , which is coming to PS5 on June 22. Kojima Productions dropped its second trailer for the game in March, which clocked in at 10 minutes and gave us a closer look at what we'll be getting up to in the sequel. (Spoiler alert: lots more walking.)

Fandoms have also become increasingly powerful — and toxic. Adult fans have a lot of disposable income to spend on cinema tickets (which are expensive these days), merchandise, and theme parks. They also don't always behave well on the internet. Look at how Bella Ramsey is currently being treated by fans of The Last of Us video games. Or how the young stars of the Star Wars sequel trilogy were appallingly treated. Daisy Ridley had to quit Instagram over the harassment she faced, much of it sexist, while John Boyega was frequently the target of racial abuse. Fan is a truncation of fanatic, and in the febrile atmosphere of online platforms it doesn't take much to spark a torrent of hate at a public figure.

James Norton's ex takes swipe at Happy Valley star after brutal move

Reports of the celebrity couple's split first emerged four days ago, and James Norton already appears to be moving on. James Norton's ex-girlfriend Charlotte Rose Smith appeared to take a savage swipe at the Happy Valley star after reports emerged that he joined the exclusive celebrity dating app Raya just days after their breakup. Charlotte, 26, took to Instagram with a post that many saw as a pointed response to their split. She shared the iconic image of Nicole Kidman gleefully celebrating her divorce from Tom Cruise on her story. This picture is often used to symbolise feeling liberated by a breakup. The same meme has previously been shared by other celebrities, including Jenna Dewan after her divorce from Channing Tatum. ‌ ‌ Charlotte posted this story shortly after Norton, 39, was reportedly spotted on Raya. The dating app is known for attracting creatives and celebrities, and according to The Sun, the actor has been seen on it with a new profile that features photos of him with a shaved head. Norton buzzed his hair off for his upcoming film Sunny Dancer, which he is currently filming in Scotland alongside The Last of Us star Bella Ramsey. Norton and Charlotte began dating in late 2023 and were seen together on numerous occasions. At the time, an insider told The Sun: "They have been enjoying dates and seem very happy together. It has been a year since his relationship with Imogen ended and he appears to get on so well with Charlotte. They make a lovely couple." ‌ While James may be re-entering the dating world, Charlotte seems to be channelling her feelings into her art. She has been posting a series of cryptic TikToks from her London studio. In one recent clip, she declared, "When everything is falling apart I will always have art. Broken heart? Still got my art." In another, she can be seen confidently strutting in a satin dress with the caption: "How I imagine every ex thinks of me." ‌ Meanwhile, James appears to be leaning on his family during this difficult time. On a recent episode of the Travel Secrets podcast, he revealed that he is planning a trip to Kenya with his parents, Hugh and Lavinia, and sister Jessica. "It's with my family, which is really lovely," he said. "There's a point you get to in your early twenties...I was lucky enough to look at my mum and dad when we were all adults, and say, 'We get on!' "My dad and I have a grudge match playing chess and we play bridge. My sister has two little boys who are six and four and we have a really nice little family unit. So for the first time, I'm taking them on holiday. We're going to the Masai Mara for some safari. I can't wait to see my little nephews do safari." James was previously engaged to actress Imogen Poots, 35. The couple ended their seven-year relationship in late 2023. While speaking to The Sunday Times after their split, Norton admitted: "Some of the choices recently weren't mine, yet I don't feel begrudging."
