Kerala SIT pauses Hema Committee probe citing lack of testimonies

The Special Investigation Team formed by the Kerala government to investigate allegations of sexual abuse in the Malayalam film industry has said that it was closing all cases in the matter, citing the reluctance of women to proceed, the Deccan Herald reported on Monday. After the release of the Justice Hema committee report on sexual harassment and gender inequality in August, several women in the Malayalam film industry had made allegations of sexual misconduct by their male colleagues over the years. In response, the state government had formed a seven-member panel of high-ranking police officers to investigate the allegations of sexual abuse. A total of 120 first information reports were registered, The News Minute reported. Of these, 35 cases were registered by the police based on statements given to the Hema committee. The other 85 cases were filed based on allegations made on social media and statements given by the women. Chargesheets were filed in 26 cases. Twenty cases have been closed and the remaining will be closed soon, the Deccan Herald reported. The Special Investigation Team informed courts that it was unable to proceed with the cases because the women were not giving statements. The investigation will resume if and when they give their statements, Onmanorama reported.

Karnataka: Five, including two minors, arrested for raping 15-year-old twice in 2 months

The Belagavi Police in Karnataka have arrested five individuals, including two minors, for allegedly gang-raping a 15-year-old girl and filming the act, and then raping her again within a span of two months, The News Minute reported on Sunday. Belagavi Police Commissioner Bhushan Borase on Sunday said that a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act had been registered at the Agricultural Produce Market Committee police station the previous day against six persons. Among them, two are minors. Within 24 hours of the case being filed, five people have been arrested while the police are on the lookout for the sixth person, India Today reported. The offences, which allegedly occurred between December and January, came to light only recently when the complainant's parents approached the police. According to the complaint, the minor was first taken by her friend – one of the perpetrators – in a car to Windmill Hill in Muttyanatti village in December. After gaining her trust, he allegedly lured her to the spot, where he and five others raped her and filmed the act. The videos were then used to blackmail her, resulting in a second case of sexual assault in January. In the second instance, the man took the complainant to Khadi Machine Hill near Alatage, where three others allegedly raped her again, The New Indian Express reported. 'She was gang raped several times in different places. We will try to ensure the strictest punishment for the accused,' the police commissioner said.

Chennai court convicts man in Anna University sexual assault case

A Chennai court on Wednesday convicted a man for the sexual assault of a student on the campus of Anna University, Live Law reported. Judge M Rajalakshmi of the Chennai Mahila court found the man, Gnanasekaran, guilty on all 11 charges filed against him, The News Minute reported. He was convicted under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita pertaining to rape and sexual harassment. The court will deliver the sentence on June 2. Gnanasekaran has requested leniency from the court on his sentencing, citing his responsibilities toward his mother and daughter, according to Live Law . On December 23, Gnanasekaran had allegedly filmed the student and her partner on the university campus and threatened to leak the footage to the dean and the couple's parents if they did not comply with his demands. Gnanasekaran then allegedly took the complainant to a remote location where he first blackmailed her before sexually assaulting her. The first information report filed in the case stated that the accused had illegally detained the student for 40 minutes. Before fleeing the scene, Gnanasekaran also demanded the complainant's phone number and said that she should meet him whenever he called. Gnanasekaran, who ran a roadside eatery near the campus, was arrested by the Greater Chennai Police two days after the incident. The police had said that at least seven other cases were pending against him. The case had also sparked a controversy after the FIR based on the complaint was leaked online, revealing the identity of the student. Stating that this had caused the student 'trauma and humiliation', the Madras High Court directed the Tamil Nadu government on December 28 to provide Rs 25 lakh in compensation to her. The bench also called it a serious failure on the part of the police. In addition, the High Court had constituted an all-woman Special Investigation Team to probe the case. The team filed a chargesheet with the Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Saidapet on February 25, The News Minute reported. The case was later moved to the Mahila court in Allikulam. The High Court had also expressed shock over the language used in the FIR, stating that it amounted to victim-shaming, and directed the Tamil Nadu Police to conduct a departmental inquiry into the leak. However, the Supreme Court in January stayed the High Court order on the inquiry. Advocates Mukul Rohatgi and Siddharth Luthra, representing the Tamil Nadu government, had attributed the leak to a technical glitch.

Who offered ₹5 lakh to kill Suhas Shetty? Karnataka police reveal Mangaluru murder plot

The Mangaluru City Police on Saturday said that Adil Mehroof, brother of murder victim Fazil, allegedly paid ₹5 lakh, ₹3 lakh in advance, to a group of men to kill 32-year-old Suhas Shetty, The News Minute reported. The police said the murder was planned in retaliation for an earlier attempted attack on one of the accused by Suhas and his associates, the report added Mangaluru Police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal, addressing the media on May 3, said the crime was 'partly motivated by revenge' and ruled out any communal motive. 'There is no evidence so far to suggest that the act was communal or linked to any banned organisation,' he said. (Also Read: How Mangaluru rowdy sheeter Suhas Shetty was hacked to death: Chilling details emerge) The investigation has led to the arrest of eight people so far, while two others have been identified but are yet to be taken into custody. According to police, the accused had made two earlier unsuccessful attempts to target Suhas before finally executing the plan in April. Suhas was chased in a car, cornered, and stabbed to death. He later died at AJ Shetty Hospital. Police said that the conspiracy was led by Abdul Safwan, a resident of Shantigudde, who had survived a 2023 murder attempt allegedly carried out by Suhas. Safwan discussed the matter with his friends and eventually connected with Adil Mehroof through a mutual contact. The group then finalised the murder plot. Police say the accused include individuals from Chikkamagaluru, and that while some of them have prior criminal records, others are being investigated for past involvement in crimes. The killing comes nearly two years after Fazil's murder in July 2022, which followed the death of BJP youth leader Praveen Nettaru. Those incidents had triggered communal unrest in coastal Karnataka. Fazil's murder is currently being investigated by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which has arrested 21 people so far. Meanwhile, the police have registered three new cases of stabbings of Muslim men in the city following Suhas's killing. Investigations into those cases are ongoing.
