Generate Key Takeaways Another busy week with controversial movies, very uncontroversial movies, and something strange from Thom Yorke. Here are the movies you can catch around the Twin Cities this week. Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977) Saturday, May 10, at The Parkway Theater Star Wars Day has come and gone, but, obviously, no holiday is required to get Star Wars fans out for the original. It's the second week of The Parkway's month-long run of movies from a galaxy far, far away. That's all we need to say, right? It's Star Wars. You know what you're getting. 4814 Chicago Ave., Minneapolis ($5–$7 in advance/$8–$10 at the door) Tall Tales (2025) Thursday, May 8, at The Main Cinema For one night, you can catch something you don't typically find on the big screen. Tall Tales is a new collaboration between record producer Mark Pritchard, Radiohead's Thom Yorke, and visual artist Jonathan Zawada. They're calling it a "visual album" that draws on synth-pop, prog, dub, 70s synth, Joe Meek, Ivor Cutler, Library, krautrock, and Warp Records' heyday. (It's being released, in part, by Warp.) Tall Tales features new music and visuals, and they're saying it contains elements of a fairy tale, in case the title wasn't an obvious enough hint. It's not a whole lot to go on — the trailer kind of evokes Koyaanisqatsi — but fans of these artists probably don't need a whole lot of prodding. 115 SE Main St., Minneapolis ($17) In the Mood for Love (2000) Thursday, May 8, at Grandview Theatre There's a surprising amount of Wong Kar-Wai coming to Minnesota theaters in May. Both Chungking Express and Happy Together will return to theaters, with the former screening on Wednesday. I have a soft spot for both, especially Happy Together, but if you're showing Wong Kar-Wai movies, it's hard not to start with this masterpiece. Tony Leung Chiu-Wai and Maggie Cheung star as neighbors who suspect their spouses of having affairs. They bond and are determined to keep things above board, but there might not be a movie with more pent-up sexual tension. 1830 Grand Ave., St. Paul ($14.44) Jeanne Dielman, 23, Quai Du Commerce, 1080 Bruxulles (1975) Saturday, May 10, at Alamo Drafthouse Jeanne Dielman has gotten a lot of attention over the last handful of years after it topped Sight & Sound's list of the greatest films ever made in 2022. The critics' poll inspired a lot of debate (and a lot of criticism of the poll). Nonetheless, it put Chantal Akerman's 1975 film in the spotlight and offered a chance for many (me included) to revisit and appreciate the subtle and considered character study. It rewards viewers who are down to stick it out through its three-hour and 22-minute runtime. The movie stars Delphine Seyrig as the widowed title character, obsessed with her routines and caring for her son. When the chores are done, she has clients arrive at her flat for sex. Despite its length, the movie takes place over a short period of time as Jeanne has a sexual awakening that upends her life. 9060 Hudson Rd., Woodbury ($11.91) The Brood (1979) Monday, May 12, at Emagine Willow Creek David Cronenberg's The Brood may be among the most haunting horror movies that is (at least partially) about birth. A woman is committed to the care of a possibly depraved psychologist who prevents her husband from visiting, despite his desire to find out what kind of abuses their daughter may have endured at his wife's hands. Though, that quickly becomes the least of his problems as small, deformed, child-like creatures begin to murder anyone to whom he gets close. 9900 Shelard Pkwy., Plymouth ($8.25) Related: Kevin Smith wants to bring 'Mallrats' back to Eden Prairie for its 30th anniversary More movies screening this week: Related: Tickets set to go on sale for the pre-Broadway run of 'Purple Rain' in Minneapolis

Movies to see this week: 'Spirited Away,' 'Star Trek,' 'Tremors'
The Minneapolis-St. Paul International Film Festival is underway at movie theaters around the Twin Cities. There is a lot to be excited about there. However, we've dug into that elsewhere. This week's look at repertory movies around will stick to what it does, looking at repertory screenings, including the Hitchcock Film Festival and a lot more. Here's what to catch this April 5 at The Parkway Theater Look away from the ugly Studio Ghibli knock-off AI art that briefly flooded the internet last week and toward something visually stunning. As part of its run of Hayao Miyazaki classics, The Parkway Theater is screening Spirited Away, one of the director's most stunning and engaging movies. Additionally, a new restoration of Princess Mononoke is playing in a whole lot of theaters around the Twin Cities. Details on all of those screenings can be found in the listings below. 4814 Chicago Ave., Minneapolis ($5–$10) Saturday, April 5 and Monday, April 7 at Alamo Drafthouse Tremors continues to be perplexing in wonderful ways. How did this comedy/horror (it leaned more toward horror in this first of its seven installments) wind up with a cast that included Kevin Bacon and Reba McEntire? How did Michael Gross transition from Family Ties to being the face of this franchise? In the end, all that matters is that the Graboid adventure remains absurdly fun with delightful practical effects. 9060 Hudson Rd., Woodbury ($13.06) Sunday, April 6–Monday, April 7 at Oakdale Cinema, Parkwood Cinema, Rosemount Cinema, and West End Cinema Equally beloved and derided, The Wrath of Khan is one of the most enduring Star Trek movies. (Even the newer films had to return to him.) Maybe it's because Ricardo Montalban managed to match the hammy performance of William Shatner. Maybe it's because everyone likes to yell Khan! like George Costanza. Various locations, ($8.62) Monday, April 7 at Heights Theater This is a quintessential action-adventure blockbuster of the 50s. It goes big in every way a movie from this era can, with underwater sequences, a giant squid battle, and Kirk Douglas singing a duet with a seal. (Yes, that last one is real and not a joke.) The effects are dated, sure, but not nearly as much as you might expect. 3951 Central Ave NE, Columbia Heights, ($13–$13.75) Movies screening around the Twin Cities this week: April 3: Inland Empire (2006) at Alamo Drafthouse April 3 and 6: Blue Velvet (1986) at Grandview Theatre April 3: Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) at The Parkway Theater April 3: Hoosiers (1995) at Emagine Willow Creek April 3–8: Princess Mononoke (1997) at AMC Eden Prairie, AMC Rosedale, and AMC Southdale April 4: Scream It Off Screen at The Parkway Theater April 4: Dune (1984) at Alamo Drafthouse April 4–9: Princess Mononoke (1997) at Oakdale Cinema, Parkwood Cinema, and West End Cinema (not April 9) April 4–5: Diva (1981) at Walker Art Center April 4–6: Blade (1998) in 35mm at The Trylon Cinema April 5: Waffles and Minecraft Block Brunch at Oakdale Cinema and Parkwood Cinema April 5 and 8: Princess Mononoke (1997) at Emagine Eagan April 6: Empire Records (1995) at Audrey Rose Vintage April 6: The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) at Roxy's Cabaret April 6: The Notebook (2004) at Emagine Eagan, Emagine Lakeville, Emagine White Bear, and Emagine Willow Creek April 6: Little Big League (1994) at Nicollet Island Pavilion (free) April 6: Smiley Face (2007) at Alamo Drafthouse April 6–8: Beau Travail (1992) at The Trylon Cinema April 7: Killer Party (1986) at Emagine Willow Creek April 7: Mystery Machine at Alamo Drafthouse April 7: Marcus Mystery Movie at Oakdale Cinema, Parkwood Cinema, Rosemount Cinema, Southbridge Crossing Cinema, and West End Cinema April 7 and 9: The Hunger Games (2012) at Alamo Drafthouse April 8: Demons (1985) at Alamo Drafthouse

Must-see concerts this week: GloRilla, Gary Louris, Kraftwerk
Despite that anxious Minnesota spring feeling — is it shorts weather or is it going to snow? — the outdoor concert season isn't quite here. In lieu of planning that first spring cookout, here are the concerts that will keep you occupied until Prince's promise of snow in April is safely in the rearview mirror. Thursday, March 27 at The Armory GloRilla's 2024 GLORIOUS was, surprisingly, her debut full-length, despite having had released hit songs already. Adding to the surprise for casual fans, it was discussed in reviews as a "comeback" after a stretch of being absent from the charts. The record, as well as her 2024 mixtape Ehhthagng Ehhthang produced plenty more hits like 'Yeah Glo!' and 'TGIF.' The show in Minneapolis will be without the albums high-profile collabs with Megan Thee Stallion, Cardi B, and Sexyy Red, but it's still sure to be an energy-packed night at The Armory. Saturday, March 29 at The Dakota A gifted musical storyteller, Grant has a knack for dropping a laugh-inducing turn of phrase into melancholy songs. (See: 'GMF,' 'The Queen of Denmark,' or 'Where Dreams Go to Die.') His songwriting is biting, despite the often sweet melodies and gentle timbre. His latest release, The Art of the Lie, has a little more bombast than usual — he has likened the tone to Vangelis' Blade Runner soundtrack — but under it all is the songwriting and humanizing look at the often mundane aspects of life that mark some of his best work. Saturday, March 29 at The Parkway Theater The Jayhawks frontman will celebrate the release of his latest solo effort, Dark Country, this week. The album's moody ballads live up to the name. It's got quite a few pensive love songs — not surprising, since the record is dedicated to his wife — but there's a somber thread to songs like "Getting Older" and "Dead Porcupine" that make it an exciting and captivating listen. Sunday, March 30 at The Cedar Cultural Center There's a meditative quality to seeing the Tuvan throat singing trio Alash perform live. They've built an international reputation for infusing their traditional folk music with modern influences. That ability to incorporate western music has aided collaboration between groups like the Sun Ra Arkestra and Béla Fleck and the Flecktones. (Fleck will perform in Minneapolis a few times this week as well, heading to The Dakota as the Béla Fleck, Edmar Casteñada, Antonio Sanchez Trio.) Sunday, March 30 at Orpheum Theatre The seminal krautrock group celebrates the 50th anniversary of Autobahn and their first U.S. tour this spring, promising a multimedia experience with striking visuals that add some flair to their hallmark stage presence. Following a 20-year break from touring in the U.S., the group has come to town just four times, including, most recently, a 2022 show at the State Theatre. With this being a celebration of Autobahn, fans are likely in for something a little different than they've brought to town on Monday, Mar. 24: Béla Fleck, Edmar Casteñada, Antonio Sanchez Trio at The Dakota Hovvdy with Video Age at Turf Club An Evening with Joe Boyd at The Cedar Cultural Center Mxmtoon at Varsity Theater Skating Polly and Gully Boys at Pilllar Forum Time Room, Big Pinch, and Not Your Baby at Zhora Darling The Fabulous Thunderbirds featuring Kim Wilson at The Parkway Theater Kenny Reichert Quartet at Berlin The Dans at The White Squirrel Bar (free) Roe Family Singers at 331 Club (free) Concerts on Tuesday, Mar. 25: Béla Fleck, Edmar Casteñada, Antonio Sanchez Trio at The Dakota Anberlin - 20th anniversary of NFTP with Copeland and The Dangerous Summer at Varsity Theater Blue Tuesday: Omar Abdulkarim Quartet pays tribute to Roy Hargrove at Berlin Martha Wainwright with Brad Barr at Hook and Ladder Giovannie and the Hired Guns with Aaron McBee at Fine Line Allergen, Scam Likely, Kate Malanaphy, and Hey, ily!
