Weekend events for Nashville residents avoiding CMA Fest

Country music is one of the great constants in Nashville, but that doesn't mean there isn't more to enjoy. Why it matters: Sometimes longtime residents need a break from the boot scooting. State of play: While CMA Fest is certainly the biggest event of the weekend, there are plenty of other fun things to do. If you'd prefer twang-free activities, we're here to help. 🌱 Cheekwood's community celebration: The botanical garden is offering discounted admission for nonmembers this weekend. The event runs through Saturday and includes food trucks, family-friendly activities, $5 gardening classes and concerts. A gardenside screening of "The Princess Bride" is planned Friday night. 🎟️ Movie mania: The Belcourt Theatre is in the midst of a series celebrating films shot in and around Nashville. A special Saturday seminar will delve into the city's role in "Hick Flick" culture through films like "Ernest Scared Stupid," which was filmed in East Nashville. 🏛️ Play tourist: The Parthenon is hosting an architectural tour on Saturday that uses our replica, which was built in the 1890s, to examine the features of the historic Greek structure that was constructed thousands of years ago. 🍩 Eat sweets: A citywide bakery crawl is underway all month. Several local bakeries are participating with limited-time specials like a chocolate chip pistachio cookie at Baked on Eighth, orange creamsicle donuts at East Park Donuts and lemon thyme shortbread danishes at Brightside Bakeshop. Plus: The annual LGBTQ+ Pride coffee crawl begins later this month. But some shops have already rolled out special drinks, like The Slayer at Fido, a shaken espresso latte with cayenne and honey.

Fact Check: Yes, Trump pardoned Ross Ulbricht, founder of Silk Road dark web marketplace

Claim: U.S. President Donald Trump pardoned Ross Ulbricht, the creator of dark web marketplace Silk Road. Rating: Ross Ulbricht, formerly known online by the pseudonym "Dread Pirate Roberts" (a nod to the novel "The Princess Bride"), is known today as the founder of the Silk Road marketplace, a former site on the dark web notorious for selling illicit drugs, among other products. Since Donald Trump retook office in January 2025, social media users have suggested that the president's hard line immigration policies and rhetoric about migrants being "criminals" or "drug dealers" are hypocritical because on Jan. 21, 2025, his second day back in the White House, Trump issued Ulbricht a full and complete pardon following his arrest and imprisonment in 2013 and 2015, respectively, for drug trafficking, computer hacking and money laundering. For example, one Facebook user shared a meme that claimed the president pardoned Ulbricht and added: "Who's letting criminals and drug dealers loose in our country?" (Facebook user Raymond Wynn) This rumor is indeed true. Trump posted about the pardon on his social media platform, Truth Social, and it was reported by reputable news media outlets like Axios and the BBC. Federal documentation also confirmed the grant of clemency (archived). (Whether the Silk Road sold fentanyl, as claimed in the above meme, is unconfirmed. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC] data on drug overdoses suggest that fentanyl did not become prevalent until after Silk Road closed in 2013. But the site was notorious for selling vast swathes of drugs.) Ulbricht created the Silk Road site, accessible only using specific software that could connect to the dark web, in January 2011. He ran its cryptocurrency-based marketplace until October 2013, when it was shut down by federal authorities and he was arrested. The BBC reported that in the two and a half years it was operational, users sold more than $200 million in drugs through the site, which also offered fake IDs and hacking tools. "It's kinda earned the reputation as the eBay of drugs," cybersecurity researcher Brian Krebs reportedly told NPR in 2013, following Ulbricht's arrest. In 2015, Ulbricht was sentenced to life in prison by a federal judge for drug trafficking, computer hacking and money laundering as part of the Silk Road operations. In a 2015 news release from the Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York, U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara called Ulbricht "a drug dealer and criminal profiteer who exploited people's addictions and contributed to the deaths of at least six young people." Ulbricht attended Trump's 2025 State of the Union address, according to a post he made on X. — Snopes' archives contributed to this report. Abuse, National Institute on Drug. Inside Lindsay Jang and Max Levy's wedding ceremony—and why they told no one about it

How did your families react to the idea of a private ceremony? Jang: Completely unphased. Levy: 'Send some photos!' After Covid-19, I think everyone appreciates time spent hanging out together more than stressing over big events. Your blended family dynamic is so unique and inspiring. Lindsay, you and Matt Abergel [Jang's business partner and former life partner] co-parent your two kids, and Max and Matt are old friends. How did that friendship evolve into this beautiful family structure? Jang: Matt is my closest friend, and his opinion matters a lot to me. He was actually the first person I called after running into Max. I remember saying, 'Hey, guess who's in Hong Kong, single and looks good? Max Levy. What are his red flags?'. Matt replied, 'No red flags. He's a little critical.' They share many of the same values, which has made this modern family frictionless. Levy: I think the main thing that we all have now is maturity and being able to use that maturity and experience to focus on what's really important. What was the most memorable moment of the day? Jang: Our wedding 'administrator', who spoke exactly like the priest from The Princess Bride (1987) —somewhat nonsensical. Levy: Luckily I like reading forms, because I understood nothing that was coming out of his mouth. Did you miss having friends or a larger crowd present? Jang: No. Levy: That's like me saying 'did I forget to have an anxiety attack last night before bed?'. How do you balance your personal and professional lives as a couple? Jang: We both have a lot of freedom over our schedules and our work overlaps in many ways. What's special is that we get to talk about our projects at home, but not in that negative sense of 'bringing work home'. It's really valuable to have someone whose opinion matters and who offers insight from a completely different perspective. Of course, we don't always agree, but that's part of the dynamic. Levy: Actually that's been one of the best dynamics about our relationship sometimes, is learning how to respectfully disagree with each other's opinions. We look at the same things very differently, but I trust her opinion because I know that she's going to be honest. Lindsay, how do your kids feel about this new chapter in your lives? Jang: They're happy as long as I'm happy. They're teenagers, and we've always had a very open, honest household, so there are a lot of jokes and good-natured teasing. Levy: 'Good-natured……' What's next for you two—honeymoon, projects or simply enjoying married life? Jang: All of the above.

From Sinners to luas surfing: 8 surprising Irish movie moments

In all fairness, it was the last thing I expected to see midway through a horror film set in 1930s Mississippi: a gaggle of vampires, dancing Irish jigs, baring their fangs and giving it socks to Rocky Road to Dublin like they were in the final round of auditions for some weird precursor to Riverdance. That was only one of the most surprising things about Sinners, the hugely entertaining deep south horror directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Michael B. Jordan as wheeler-dealer identical twins Smoke and Stack Moore. If you haven't seen it yet, the Rocky Road to Dublin scene is not exactly a spoiler, but it was certainly one of the most unexpected moments I've ever experienced in a cinema. "I'm obsessed with Irish folk music, my kids are obsessed with it, my first name is Irish," Coogler told Indiewire. "I think it's not known how much crossover there is between African-American culture and Irish culture, and how much that stuff is loved in our community." We all know about Saving Private Ryan being filmed on Curracloe Beach in Wexford, or Braveheart being shot in Trim, but here are eight other occasions where Ireland has unexpectedly popped up in film… 1. The Frames in Pulp Fiction (1994) It's funny how one actress's wardrobe choice can do wonders for a little Irish band's street cred. Derry native Bronagh Gallagher plucked a Frames t-shirt out of her suitcase for her scene in Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction - the one where Uma Thurman overdoses - and Glen Hansard and co. were promptly immortalised on celluloid forever. Gallagher later admitted that she thought "It's only a wee independent film, you know - nobody will see it!" Watch it here... 2. Jameson whiskey in On the Waterfront (1954) Product placement wasn't really a thing in 1954 - not in the same way it is today, at least. So we're going to assume that the warehouse full of crates of Jameson that featured prominently in the background of one powerful scene, all emblazoned with 'Dublin Irish Whiskey' and the iconic 'JJ&S' logo of old, was down to the personal preference of director Elia Kazan, or maybe Marlon Brando. (Spoiler alert: a character is crushed to death when a pallet of crates falls on him - death by whiskey.) 3. Kilmainham Gaol in The Italian Job (1969) Many films have used the iconic and historical Kilmainham Gaol as a backdrop. The elegant staircases and architecture of the building, built in 1796, is recognisable to anyone who's done the museum tour - but you might not have expected to see it in a movie set in London and doubling as the notorious Wormwood Scrubs prison that housed Cockney criminal Charlie Croker (Michael Caine). Other unexpected films, including 1965's The Face of Fu-Manchu (starring Christopher Lee) and 2017's Paddington 2 (yes, really) also featured the gaol's interior. 4. The Cliffs of Moher in The Princess Bride (1987) The Princess Bride has become a kids' movie staple over the decades, but if you first watched Rob Reiner's 1987 masterpiece, you probably weren't aware of its Irish connection. One of Ireland's most-visited tourist destinations, the stunning Cliffs of Moher in Co. Clare, temporarily became the 'Cliffs of Insanity' during the scene where the dashing Westley (Cary Elwes) is in hot pursuit of Vizzini, Fessic and Inigo Montoya as they scale the cliffs with Buttercup. Inconceivable! 5. The Lady in Red in Deadpool and Wolverine (2024) You may have heard it a bajillion times, but you probably weren't expecting Chris de Burgh's most famous song to pop up in a Marvel movie. The schmaltzy 1986 tune got another lease of life when it featured in Deadpool and Wolverine, soundtracking the scene where Deadpool first encounters the alternate-universe canine version of himself, Dogpool. The song has also featured in the films American Psycho, Working Girl and Dodgeball. 6. Toner's pub in A Fistful of Dynamite (1971) If you've ever found yourself in Toner's pub in Dublin, you may have noticed a few unusual photos framed on the walls. A Sergio Leone film, shot on Baggot Street? It's true: the legendary boozer was the backdrop of a scene in Leone's 1971 film A Fistful of Dynamite (also called Duck, You Sucker!). Although the film is set amid the Mexican Revolution (1910 - 1920), one flashback scene sees Irish Republican John Mallory (James Coburn) recalling a moment where he was betrayed by a former friend in Ireland. Funny thing is, the interior of the pub hasn't changed all that much since 1971. 7. Luas-surfing in Ek Tha Tiger (2012) Dublin was bestowed with a smidge of Bollywood glamour in 2012 when Indian action/thriller Ek Tha Tiger was largely shot in the capital. The plot follows a spy who is tasked with observing a science professor at Trinity College - but alongside plenty of Trinners footage, one memorable scene involved actor Salman Khan surfing a Luas before coming to blows with an adversary on board the tram. Sure, you'd see worse on the Red Line of a Saturday night. Watch it here... 8. Smithfield Square as Checkpoint Charlie in The Spy Who Came in from The Cold (1961) Anyone who's seen The Spy Who Came in from the Cold will agree that Martin Ritt's adaptation of the John LeCarré thriller is a masterpiece - not least due to the superb performances by Cyril Cusack and Richard Burton. Cusack wasn't the only Irish link to the film, though. While interior scenes were shot at the newly-opened Ardmore Studios in Bray, eagle-eyed viewers may also have noticed that the cobblestoned Smithfield area of Dublin city centre, best known in those days for its horse fair, doubled as Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin (which can be spotted in the trailer). A section of the 'Berlin Wall' was even built for the film with appropriate signage about 'Leaving the American Zone' and 'Entering East Berlin' - much to the locals' bemusement, we're sure.
