Evacuation near Donald Trump golf course as police establish 'security cordon'

One local resident described being forced to leave her home in an "abrupt" manner. Households next to Donald Trump's golf course in Aberdeenshire were temporarily evacuated this afternoon in a security scare. ‌ Police Scotland erected a cordon around an entrance to the Menie Estate while precautionary checks were carried out on a vehicle. ‌ The Record spoke to one local resident who said she has been "abruptly" ordered to leave her cottage in the village of Balmedie, despite still being dressed in pyjamas. ‌ Stephanie McAllister, 38, said she was surprised by the instruction and lives yards from Donald Trump's golf club. The mum-of-one was left standing outside Old Aberdeen Road in Balmedie while the US President prepares to depart Scotland and fly back to Washington DC. Part of the road is closed, with golf course staff and security officers pushed back beyond road barriers during the incident. ‌ Stephanie said: "A man forced us to leave the house. it was really abrupt. "I'm not happy about it. People deserve to know what's happening. I've held my tongue." Police vans have blocked the main road past Trump International Golf Links in the last half hour amid rumours of a bomb squad investigation. ‌ A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Shortly after 3pm, a security cordon was put in place at an entrance to the Menie Estate, Aberdeenshire, as officers carried out precautionary checks on a vehicle. "This search has been completed, there was no criminality and the cordon has been removed." It comes after Donald Trump and John Swinney bonded over breakfast earlier as the First Minister urged the US President to reconsider his imposition of 10 per cent tariffs on whisky. ‌ Scotland's national drink makes up a quarter of the UK's food and drink exports but distillers are already losing £4 million a week as a result of the Republican leader economic agenda. Trump and Swinney met in person for the first time on Monday evening when they sat next to each other for a beef dinner at the President's golf resort in Aberdeenshire. Scottish Government sources told the Record the two leaders were in conversation for more than an hour and "discussed at length critical issues such as whisky".

World's Oldest Christian Church Newspaper Closes

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Church of England Newspaper, one of the longest-running faith-based publications in the world, ended its print production months after the passing of its owner and key financial backer, Keith Young. The newspaper, founded by a group of young evangelical clergy in 1828 as The Record, had been a fixture in Anglican news coverage for nearly two centuries. The publication's editor, Andrew Carey, announced last week that the brand had to "review its operations" after Young's death on February 23, aged 86. Young was "generously the sole provider of additional finance to continue supporting the paper," Carey said. Newsweek has reached out to Carey for additional comment. Why It Matters The closure of The Church of England Newspaper's print edition marks a significant loss in the landscape of religious and historical journalism. As the oldest Anglican newspaper and one of the longest-running continually published papers globally, its closing underscores the growing challenges facing print media in an increasingly, digital-first era. What To Know Publication's Legacy In 1949, The Record merged with The Church of England Family Newspaper and became known by its current title. Over the decades, the paper cultivated a reputation for independent reporting on Anglican and broader Christian affairs, maintaining a generally evangelical editorial stance and providing analysis, opinion, and global church news. Closure Announcement Editor Carey announced on July 22 that the print edition would cease following the death of Young, who had served as both owner and the director of its parent company, Political and Religious Intelligence Ltd. Young had provided the crucial financial backing needed for the paper to continue publishing. What People Are Saying Andrew Carey, editor of the Church of England Newspaper, said in his announcement to readers on July 22: "Keith was generously the sole provider of additional finance to continue supporting the paper and we are now exploring all options to secure a future and hope that you will bear with us as we seek an orderly transition to serve our readers and subscribers, our advertisers and all other partners." Duncan Williams, of Son Christian Media, told Press Gazette: "Given that there is much talk of a Christian revival in the U.K, it is sad to hear reports this month that the long-established Church of England Newspaper is closing. "I am well aware that religious publishing is especially challenging, and that securing revenue through advertising or subscriptions is essential for survival. I would urge publishers to consider moving to a web-based platform or utilising the subscription advantages of services such as Substack. I strongly believe there is a readership that still needs to be served by this kind of publication, and that it is not simply a niche or heritage publishing model." What Happens Next Carey said The Church of England Newspaper will send out a weekly email newsletter "for the foreseeable future." There will be no more print edition "until further notice" while the paper explores "all options before us," he said.

Probe launched after woman filmed dragging dogs by necks in shocking clip

Kiki Sutherland is filmed dragging two pets around a garden in the horrifying clip recently taken at the house in Monymusk. The SSPCA has launched a probe after a disturbing video emerged of a woman dragging dogs by their necks at a property in Aberdeenshire. ‌ Kiki Sutherland, in her 60s, was filmed dragging the pets around a garden at a house in Monymusk in the horrifying clip. ‌ In the clip, Sutherland can be seen marching around the garden with the scruff of a Dachshund-type dog in her fist. She is then seen walking towards a Spaniel before grabbing him by the back of his neck, yanking him back, picking him up and throttling his loose skin. ‌ The Record spoke to the owner of the two-year-old spaniel involved in the sickening scene. Mark Lawrie said he was left "horrified" after watching the clip. ‌ The 55-year-old said: "I was sent the clip and I was absolutely horrified watching it. "She was so heavy handed with my dog, Buddy, when she didn't need to be at all. " Buddy is the most loving and affectionate dog with the sweetest nature - he's obedient and does most things you say. ‌ "You put your dog into the trust of someone else because you think they'll take good care of them. "It makes me feel sick that someone could handle Buddy like this when he is so gentle." ‌ On Facebook, Sutherland is the admin of a private pet group called 'Crazy Dog Crew'. Mark handed Buddy over to Sutherland for two weeks after his other dog came into season. He claims that she is known in the area for doing dog walks and boarding and he trusted her through word of mouth. ‌ But Mark said she offered to look after Buddy for free. He continued: "She took Buddy as a favour for me and no money was exchanged but it obviously raises concern if this is how she is treating animals. "Whether or not she takes money from others for it, I do not know, but I'm not happy with how she treated Buddy and my wife was crying after watching the clip. ‌ "She didn't need to manhandle him like that and she knows it. He would have just followed her to wherever she was going. She didn't need to use such force." Aberdeenshire Council confirmed that the property in Monymusk does not hold an animal boarding license. ‌ Both the local authority and SSPCA have confirmed investigations into the incident. A spokesperson for SSPCA said: "I can confirm that this has been reported to the SSPCA and is being investigated. "We are not able to provide any further comment into ongoing investigations." Animal Health Officers attended the property and spoke with the owner. "We can confirm that the premises does not hold an animal boarding license with Aberdeenshire Council. Investigations in respect of the incident continue."
