Interior Design Masters fans fume after favourite loses to 'ugly' house in final
Interior Design Masters just cranked up the heat tonight in a shock final, as underdog John Cooper won over Rita Millat, leaving some fans fuming. The popular series sees comedian Alan Carr and interiors guru Michelle Ogundehin pit a group of designers against one another in various challenges over seven weeks. Tasked with transforming two holiday cottages in the village of Portmeirion in Wales for tonight's final, DT teacher John, 46, went for a Mediterranean-inspired finish, while visual merchandiser Rita, 42, opted for a cosy pastel-coloured vibe. For background: while Rita won the first challenge in the series, John was left in the bottom cohort on the sofa on four occasions. Some viewers weren't happy, as they felt Rita had been more consistent throughout the competition and it was sheer luck John pulled it out the bag at the last minute. 'Feel like I've just watched a terrible episode of changing rooms! That was awful – Rita had an amazing eye for design and this program ruined it. Rita if you're listening don't change who you are, you're amazing!' commented @cookiesam50 on X. 'I think that John was very lucky to be in the final but I preferred his house tonight. Rita's kitchen was underwhelming and that stairway was horrendous,' reasoned @BurghillGirl. However, @alemonsqueeze raged: 'My goodness, Rita was robbed! John has been at the bottom 4 times, his transformation was ugly and tasteless.' @Claret40 said: 'Gutted Rita didn't win Interior Design Masters. She was consistently head & shoulders above everyone else week after week. I wish her well in the future.' Others were very much team John though, as @TheSilverZebra said: 'Congratulations to John, the colours & design were spot on. That pop of blue throughout really brought it together, another great series.' @Alligatoruk1975 said: 'Yay John!!! Well deserved win on #InteriorDesignMasters. His confidence and style has grown throughout the series. His final room was very stylish and classy.' At one point throughout the series, Rita slightly lost her confidence, but brought it back when she injected her personality into her designs again. Meanwhile, John has been praised for his attention to detail, with time management an issue throughout the contest. In the seven weeks, contestants have transformed everything from hostel bunkrooms to hospitality boxes in the hope of going home with a major homeware range contract with John Lewis, which (the aptly named) John bagged tonight. Last year, host Alan Carr admitted on The Rest is Entertainment podcast that sometimes clients aren't happy with the show's design makeovers. 'Sometimes the people who own the shop or hairdressers or the hotel room really hate what they've done,' Alan said. 'What we do is we go back and paint it back to how it originally was so no one is offended.' View More » Interior Design Masters is streaming on BBC iPlayer. Got a story? The former Pointless host's murder mystery is set around a retirement home in a fictitious village in Kent and is coming to Netflix later this year. The streaming giant has confirmed that the star-studded movie will premiere exclusively on its platform on August 28, 2025, which quite fittingly happens to be a Thursday. It centres around four spirited retirees who spend their days solving cold case murders for amusement, and wait until you find out who's playing them.... For the latest TV and showbiz gossip sign up to our newsletter . The film has been directed by Chris Columbus, who is no stranger to a high profile movie having directed films like Home Alone and several of the Harry Potter franchise. The preview introduces us to the characters played by Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan and Ben Kingsley, as they meet Celia Imrie's character for the first time while investigating a cold case from the 70s. Celia's character Joyce asks the other Coopers Chase residents, "isn't this room usually used for jigsaws?", to which Helen Mirren's character Elizabeth says, "not on a Thursday, no." The clip also shows Joyce getting rather overexcited when a present-day murder takes place, and offers sneak peeks at the characters portrayed by Naomi Ackie and Ingrid Oliver. The official blurb for the film reads: "Based on Richard Osman's international bestselling novel of the same name, The Thursday Murder Club follows four irrepressible retirees – Elizabeth (Helen Mirren), Ron (Pierce Brosnan), Ibrahim (Ben Kingsley) and Joyce (Celia Imrie) – who spend their time solving cold case murders for fun." Sir Ben Kingsley as Ibrahim Arif, Pierce Brosnan as Ron Ritchie, Helen Mirren as Elizabeth Best and Celia Imrie as Joyce Meadowcroft. Earlier this week, the author expressed his excitement about the trailer release on his podcast, The Rest is Entertainment. He said: "On Thursday, the very first trailer for the Thursday Murder Club film is being released. If you want to see it a bit early, you can follow my newsletter if you go to Instagram or Twitter, it's in the bio. "You sign up and you'll see it an hour before everyone else. But yeah, the first trailer, the teaser trailer, is out on Thursday, Netflix releasing the first trailer so you get to see all of those amazing actors playing those roles in that trailer." Podcast co-host Marina Hyde joked: "I'm already signed up to your newsletter." Richard replied: "Well, you're going to see it an hour early then." To which Marina quipped: "Can you actually just email me so I can see if before then?" Richard responded: "Oh yeah, and get sued by Netflix, great idea." You can read more here. The Thursday Murder Club will be released on Netflix on 28th August, 2025. Article continues below

They do theater, they do television, they do film, and they've developed those sorts of muscles." Richard recounted how inspiration struck for his series during visits to his mother Brenda's retirement home: "You just sit and chat with these people and they've lived these extraordinary lives. You hear these amazing stories and gossip and wisdom." Contemplating the elderly, he expressed that those in retirement homes often feel "overlooked". This realisation sparked the concept for his story, centred around a diverse group of retired individuals who come together in an effort to solve a murder mystery.

More info Richard Osman has opened up about the potential of his participation in the celebrity edition of The Traitors. During an episode of his podcast, The Rest is Entertainment, the 54-year-old former Pointless star and co-host Marina Hyde delved into discussions about the forthcoming BBC reality show. Richard said: "Shall we talk about Celebrity Traitors? I keep reading the potential list of celebrities taking part." He continued: "There are lists out there which I don't think are a million miles off the truth but the official list is yet to be announced and there are people on the list who I have not seen as well", prompting Marina to ask: "Is Bob Mortimer going to be on it?" Richard responded: "I cannot say. Neither can I confirm or deny who is or isn't going to be on it." Then, he developed his seven-word response: "I'm not going to be in it." He added: "I tell you that is all I'm about to say." (Image: Alan Chapman/Dave Benett/Getty I) Marina added: "But it has been quite is worrying for the producers because it is a long time between filming and transmission which is set to be early Autumn, isn't it?" Richard replied: "Yet again, you would assume the regular Traitors will be in their usual slot in January, so you would have thought it would be late September/early October. They are filming as we speak." He concluded: "Shall we work out who is going to win it? And we will be announcing some of these names so if you haven't seen some of these names as I say there will be of the biggest names in there are Stephen Fry, Clare Balding, Jonathan Ross...I can't see any big personalities in there." The duo then speculated on potential winners, with Richard tipping comedians Lucy Beaumont and Joe Wilkinson as frontrunners. It comes as the cast of Celebrity Traitors were seen being discreetly transported to an undisclosed location to commence the reality show. (Image: BBC / Studio Lambert) The celebrities, including Good Morning Britain's Kate Garraway, chat show legend Jonathan Ross, songstress Charlotte Church, the iconic Stephen Fry, and singer Paloma Faith, were ushered into a black people carrier under strict instructions from production staff to keep a low profile and refrain from mingling with one another. Last week, in a bid to maintain secrecy, the entire cast was swiftly escorted through a side door exit as filming preparations ramp up at a mystery venue. TV personality Jonathan Ross was spotted getting into a car and sitting down for a conversation with Clare Balding, who was already seated inside. Claudia Winkleman is set to return as the host of the hit series, which made its UK debut three years ago. An American version of the celebrity-packed show also exists, featuring a mix of famous faces and regular contestants.
