Mel Gibson's THE RESURRECTION OF THE CHRIST Confirmed To Shoot This Summer — GeekTyrant

Mel Gibson's long-awaited The Passion of the Christ sequel, titled The Resurrection of the Christ , is ofifically moving forward and is set to start shooting in August at Rome's Cinecittà Studios. The new was announced by CEO Manuela Cacciamani. Jim Caviezel is expected to return to play Jesus in the film, while Maia Morgenstern, who played Jesus' mother in 'The Passion,' and Francesco De Vito, who portrayed Peter, are also reportedly on board. Gibson previously talked about the sequel calling it 'an acid trip' He went on to say that he'd 'never read anything like' the script, which Gibson's been writing alongside Randall Wallace. He continued offering some details: 'My brother and I and Randall all sort of congregated on this. So there's some good heads put together, but there's some crazy stuff. 'And I think in order to really tell the story properly you have to really start with the fall of the angels, which means you're in another place, you're in another realm. You need to go to hell. You need to go to Sheol.' Gibson said that he plans to bring Jim Caviezel back to the role of Jesus. Gibson said he would need to incorporate 'a few techniques' such as CGI de-aging on Caviezel since more than 20 years have passed since the first film. Gibson described the film as 'very ambitious' and said the story not only covers 'the fall of the angels' but also 'the death of the last apostle.' He said: 'It's about finding the way in that's not cheesy or too obvious. I think I have ideas about how to do that and how to evoke things and emotions in people from the way you depict it and the way you shoot it. 'So I've been thinking about it for a long time. It's not going to be easy and it's going to require a lot of planning and I'm not wholly sure I can pull it off to tell you the truth, it's super ambitious. 'But I'll take a crack at it because that's what you got to do, right, walk up to the plate, right?' Gibson previously talked about the movie saying that its 'not a linear narrative,' adding that 'you have to juxtapose the central event that I'm trying to tell with everything else around it in the future, in the past, and in other realms, and that's kind of getting a little sci-fi out there.' Mel Gibson and Lionsgate Team Up For RESURRECTION OF THE CHRIST — GeekTyrant

After nearly two decades, The Passion of the Christ is finally getting a sequel. Mel Gibson has officially partnered with Lionsgate to bring The Resurrection of the Christ to the big screen, reuniting with his longtime producing partner Bruce Davey through their Icon Productions. The announcement was made by Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson and Gibson himself, confirming that the long-gestating follow-up is happening, and production is expected to kick off in late summer. The original Passion of the Christ was a cultural and box office phenomenon when it was released in 2004, raking in $370 million domestically and more than $610 million worldwide on a $30 million budget. For a time, it held the title of the highest-grossing R-rated movie in U.S. history. Its visceral depiction of the final hours of Jesus' life sparked widespread discussion and controversy, but it also proved there was a massive global appetite for faith-based epics told on a sweeping cinematic scale. While no plot details were revealed, though the title gives a pretty obvious hint, many of the original cast members are expected to return. That includes Jim Caviezel, who portrayed Jesus, as well as Monica Bellucci, who played Mary Magdalene. Gibson co-wrote the script and will again direct. Fogelson said: 'For many, many people across the globe, The Resurrection of the Christ is the most anticipated theatrical event in a generation. It is also an awe-inspiring and spectacularly epic theatrical film that is going to leave moviegoers worldwide breathless. 'Mel is one of the greatest directors of our time, and this project is both deeply personal to him and the perfect showcase for his talents as a filmmaker. My relationship with Mel and Bruce dates back 30 years, and I am thrilled to be partnering with them once again on this landmark event for audiences.' Gibson added: 'Lionsgate's brave, innovative spirit and nimble, can-do attitude have inspired me for a long time, and I couldn't think of a more perfect distributor for The Resurrection of the Christ. I've enjoyed working with Adam and the team several times over recent years. 'I know the clever ingenuity, passion, and ambition the entire team commits to their projects and I'm confident they will bring everything they can to the release of this movie.' Gibson previously described the film as 'very ambitious' and said the story not only covers 'the fall of the angels' but also 'the death of the last apostle.' He said: 'It's about finding the way in that's not cheesy or too obvious. I think I have ideas about how to do that and how to evoke things and emotions in people from the way you depict it and the way you shoot it. 'So I've been thinking about it for a long time. Gibson also said that its 'not a linear narrative,' adding that 'you have to juxtapose the central event that I'm trying to tell with everything else around it in the future, in the past, and in other realms, and that's kind of getting a little sci-fi out there.' Gibson previously worked with Lionsgate on Hacksaw Ridge and is behind his upcoming thriller Flight Risk starring Mark Wahlberg. Lionsgate also distributes Icon's film library, which includes The Passion of the Christ . Source: Deadline

Mel Gibson, Trump 'Special Ambassador', & Italian Producer Andrea Iervolino Propose U.S.-Italy Co-Production Treaty

Recently appointed 'special ambassador' to Hollywood Mel Gibson and Italian producer Andrea Iervolino (Ferrari) are proposing a co-production agreement between Italy and the US, which they hope could serve as a 'pilot project' for the development of similar treaties between the US and other countries around the world. The filmmakers are proposing that: More from Deadline Mel Gibson's Gun Rights Restored Following Justice Department Attorney's Firing 'The Resurrection Of The Christ:' Mel Gibson To Begin Shooting Sequel This Summer, Says Rome's Cinecittà Studios Boss John Oliver Takes Jab At Mel Gibson Following Justice Dept. Attorney Firing: "Best Known For His Work In Screaming" •Italian producers are incentivized to make Italian films in the USA, involving American stars and therefore investing in the U.S.; •The Italian government launches support programs for productions that strengthen cultural ties between Italy and the United States. We understand from sources that Iervolino and Gibson met recently and agreed on the proposal. According to reports, Gibson is due to begin filming his Passion Of The Christ sequel The Resurrection Of The Christ in Italy this summer. The main benefits of the agreement would be that it would 'allow Italian producers to develop and co-produce international films between Italy and the United States, thus opening new markets; and that it will offer the USA the opportunity to attract new foreign investments, supporting the goals of the Trump agenda'. Iervolino, who as we recently revealed is working on a Trump biopic, estimates the value of such a pact could be as much as $10BN annually in direct investments in the US, thereby encouraging local American production while also giving future participating countries the opportunity to internationalize their local film industries. No word yet whether Gibson has floated the proposal with the U.S. government. The goal, Iervolino says, is to officially sign the agreement during the 2025 Venice Film Festival, a cornerstone of both the Italian and international film industry. The aim is to involve 'authoritative representatives' of both industries and both governments. An Italian-US co-production treaty has been an ambition of Italian industry for a little while. Last year there were reports that Cinecittà's Roberto Stabile was working on a similar pact with Washington but the scent went cold. Japan currently has a similar co-production treaty with the U.S. Iervolino stated: 'The world must recognize that the American entertainment industry has always been the leading one globally: it remains the main point of reference, capable of setting the rules of the industry worldwide. Meanwhile, many countries have established incentive programs to attract foreign productions and have signed bilateral agreements with various nations — but never with the United States. This has essentially left a crucial cultural bridge unresolved. It is therefore essential to initiate a win-win agreement between the USA and the rest of the world. Mel Gibson and I are actively working in this direction, using this initial agreement with Italy as inspiration for the rest of the world.' A draft version of fellow 'special ambassador' Jon Voight's plan for Hollywood was recently revealed by Deadline and included a 10% federal tax incentive for film and TV production and an American 'cultural test' akin to the rules in the UK. Voight, Gibson and Sylvester Stallone were appointed 'special ambassadors' by Trump earlier this year. The background here is that the industry has been scrambled by Trump's announcement last week of tariffs on U.S. projects that shoot overseas.
