What to Watch: The Survivors, Stick, This City Is Ours, Lego Masters and Guy Mont Spelling Bee
There has been a plethora of book-to-TV adaptations hitting screens of late. Some have been incredibly watchable (Boy Swallows Universe), some have missed the mark (hello series two of Nine Perfect Strangers). This one, based on the book by Jane Harper, will be hoping to land with audiences — and if the trailer is anything to go by, then viewers can certainly expect a twisty-turny tale. It sees The Rings Of Power star Charlie Vickers playing a young man, Kieran Elliott, haunted by events that shaped his life some 15 years earlier, when a storm took the lives of two boys close to him. He survived and is haunted by what happened, still wrestling with his complex survivor guilt as he revisits his childhood home with partner Mia (played by Yerin Ha), who also grew up in the town. Almost as soon as they land back in the tiny Tasmanian town they once called home, a body washes up on the shore, and as events unfold, it begins to look increasingly as though the death is connected to the devastating events that happened all those years ago and the death of another girl they all grew up with. Shot in Tasmania and produced by the award-winning team at Tony Ayres Productions (Fires, Clickbait, Stateless), The Survivors boasts a stunning ensemble cast, including Robyn Malcolm (pictured), Jessica De Gouw, Catherine McClements, Thom Green and Martin Sacks. With a cast like that, you know it's going to be worth a watch. Seven seasons on, it's truly a marvel there's still blood to be squeezed from the Lego Masters stone. But you can't keep a good Brickman down. And he's back, along with host Hamish Blake, to preside over builders from seven countries — Canada, China, Finland, Sweden, USA, New Zealand and Australia — to see who'll be crowned 'the ultimate grandmaster of the galaxy'. It's a stretch, but we'll allow it. Family-friendly fun. This series, starring Owen Wilson as a washed-up golf pro who finds new purpose in mentoring a young golfing prodigy, has 'TV hit' written all over it. Heartfelt performances, believable characters and clippy dialogue make it an incredibly watchable proposition, even if the idea of a show about golf makes you want to stick a tee in your eye. Even the biggest haters will fall hard for this delightful series — you're going to love it. Love yourself a gritty British crime drama? This could be about to become your new favourite. And even better — it stars Sean Bean! This series, about a gang of cocaine smugglers, has been getting great reviews in the UK, and is BBC's most-watched new drama launch of 2025, which gives you an idea of what to expect. Also stars James Nelson-Joyce (pictured) and Hannah Onslow. One for Scouse crime fans. Watching high-profile Australians try to spell on national TV will never not be funny. Throw in comedian Guy Montgomery and his comedy offsider Aaron Chen and you've got a laugh-out-loud quiz show guaranteed to tickle your funny bone. This season's line-up includes Hannah Gadsby, Hamish Blake, Rove McManus, Denise Scott and Dave Hughes. Looking forward to seeing how they fare — the worse, the better!

The 10 best TV shows headed to Aussie television this winter
Winter's closing in, which can only mean one thing: it's time to get snuggly on the couch and settle in for good old binge watch! Good news: there are plenty of great shows on the way. Ready, set, watch! And just like that, we're back with the girls! Can we still call them that? Probably not, they're well into their 50s. But true to form, they're still living their best New York lives. This season begins with Carrie settled into her enormous new Brownstone, Miranda dating up a storm (Che Diaz is out of the picture), and Charlotte still knee-deep in teen life. Frothy, escapist fun. Starring and executive produced by Owen Wilson, this series is about an over-the-hill pro golfer (Wilson) who, after the collapse of his life and his marriage, decides to hedge his bets and mentor a 17-year-old golf prodigy called Santi (Peter Dager). Described as a 'heartfelt, feel-good sports comedy', it's already getting lots of buzz. Ted Lasso 2.0? There have been some great British crime dramas doing the rounds of late, and this one, starring Sean Bean as a cocaine smuggling gangster called Ronnie Phelan, is up there, having already generated plenty of buzz in the UK. Joining Bean are James Nelson-Joyce as Ronnie's associate and Hannah Onslow as the woman he falls for — their love story is at the centre of the story. Based on the enormously popular book by Jane Harper, this stars The Rings Of Power's Charlie Vickers as Kieran Elliott, a man returning to his home town in Tasmania, along with his partner (Yerin Ha, who'll soon be seen as the romantic lead in the upcoming series of Bridgerton), haunted by a tragedy that changed their lives years earlier. When a woman's body is discovered on the beach, the truth of what really occurred comes to light. Based on the bestselling novel by E. Lockhart, the series follows the story of wealthy teen Cadence Sinclair Eastman (Emily Alyn Lind) and her close-knit group of friends, nicknamed The Liars. Cadence, from a privileged and secretive family, returns to their private island a year after a mysterious accident changed her life — dark secrets begin to emerge. One for younger viewers. If you've ever made a mixtape, then this one's for you! Based on the novel by Jane Sanderson, this tells the story of two teen lovers, Alison (Teresa Palmer) and Daniel (Jim Sturgess), living in Sheffield, England, in 1989 who drift apart, only to reconnect years later on the other side of the world. This has big One Day energy, and fans of that nostalgic Netflix series will want to check this out. Season two of this Tasmanian-set dark comedy is hitting screens mid-June. It sees Marta Dusseldorp returning to reprise her role as mum-on-the-run, Stella. She's still stuck in Mystery Bay, but good news — no one has tried to kill her in recent months! But things won't stay smooth-sailing for long — you can't mess with the Russian mafia and not expect consequences. Those that love a period drama will be pleased to see that this under-the-radar favourite is returning for a third season. The Julian Fellowes-created show follows New York's upper-crust as they navigate life in the 'Gilded Age'. Come for the fabulous frocks, stay for sensational performances from The White Lotus' Carrie Coon and Christine Baranski. Disney is doing fans a solid favour and dropping all 10 episodes of the fourth season at the same time — winning! This season sees Carmy, Sydney and Richie determined to move forward after the disastrous run-up to the opening of their fine dining establishment. Can they overcome all that toxicity and pull together as a team? We can't wait to find out. If you've seen the trailer for the third and final season of Squid Game, chances are you'll be bracing for the show's release — it looks scary as heck! This final series picks up from season two's devastating cliffhanger, and thrusts Gi-hun (Player 456) back into the game — he's more determined than ever to dismantle it once and for all. This one's shaping up to be big.

Prime Video cancels beloved fantasy series after ‘best season ever'
A hit fantasy drama has been axed by Amazon Prime Video after just three seasons, leaving fans of the series fuming Prime Video has announced the cancellation of a popular adaptation of one of the most iconic fantasy sagas of all time after just three seasons. Today (Friday, 23rd May), the streaming service confirmed The Wheel of Time, based on the books by Robert Jordan, will not be renewed for a fourth series, just over a month after its season finale in April. Despite being the streaming platform's most-watched premiere in 2021, the series' viewership has dwindled and Deadline reports the reasons behind the cancellation are financial. Fans who have stuck with the series, which stars Rosamund Pike, have been left disappointed as series three was widely considered a huge improvement over previous instalments. Hundreds of viewers have already shared their frustration on social media, reports the Mirror US. "Wdym Prime cancelled The Wheel of Time after the best season they ever had?" one viewer fumed on X (formerly Twitter). "Rosamund Pike literally spent weeks in a desert for nothing?" James Dyer of Empire raged: "No, I'm sorry @primevideouk, this WILL NOT STAND! "Season 3 was f***ing fantastic and if you can afford to pour a billion dollars into [The Lord of the Rings] The Rings Of Power, you can throw some cash at this glorious show!" To which someone else replied: "I thought it really found its feet with Series 3 as well. It felt more focused and the younger actors were starting to give Rosamund Pike a run for her money. "Completely agree with you on The Rings of Power as well. It's ok. But Wheel of Time was much better." The sentiment was echoed on Reddit, with one user remarking: "lmao of course they waited for the show to actually be well received by fans and critics to cancel it." Another weighed in: "I'm genuinely surprised by this... Seems like they had a lot of positive momentum after Season 3 and people were happy with the direction the show was going." And someone else simply stated: "I am so sad. I was really loving the last season." Yet, some watchers confessed they weren't taken aback by the news, criticising The Wheel of Time as an inferior adaptation from the get-go that didn't match the success of fantasy giants like Game of Thrones. "They wanted the next Game of Thrones," another commenter said. "It just wasn't the same kind of cultural phenomenon, no matter how good the last season was in comparison. This was bound to happen, they put a lot of money into it." Nevertheless, numerous supporters have already initiated petitions urging other streamers like Netflix to throw The Wheel of Time a lifeline. Could there still be a glimmer of hope for the series? The Wheel of Time is available to stream on Prime Video.

The Rings of Power's Cast Teases What's in Store for Gandalf and Sauron in Season 3
After it was revealed that the Stranger was Gandalf at the end of season two of Prime Video's The Rings of Power, fans of the Tolkien universe origin series have anticipated the handling of how the hero will rise. There's also the matter of what Sauron will do as he gathers his own power. In a conversation with Deadline, Daniel Weyman (Gandalf) and Charlie Vickers (Sauron) discussed how this next season is important character building for the legends they'll later become. For Gandalf, Weyman teased that it involves a lot of 'tears' and continued, 'I'm excited for this plethora of possible pitfalls, errors, and failings that young Gandalf can learn from. Literally anything could happen, because the only way we're going to see a wise being later on is if he does some pretty horrendous accidental things, and puts his foot in the wrong places, and has to pick it up and learn again. So I'm hoping for lots of that kind of action just so that we can see him develop and learn how he gets to be the wizard that we all love.' Vickers jumped in describing how Sauron might not take it lightly that he was rejected by Galadriel, but is ready to go at his quest for power alone. 'I'm incredibly lucky that Sauron in this time period is very specific to what he does. We get to go through so many exciting beats that I think fans will be really excited to see. I mean, he has made nearly all the rings now, but there's one more that he [needs] to finish the collection, which he's determined and has had in his mind for centuries. So, I'm super excited to see him go on the journey and hopefully take over Middle-earth… I'm sure everything will be great for everyone else.' Rings of Power Season one and two are currently streaming on Prime.
