John Waters Has Encouraged Chappell Roan To Consider Acting

In the pop-star tradition of Cher, Madonna and Lady Gaga, Chappell Roan might add actress to her resume. The Grammy winner revealed that she recently met legendary cult filmmaker John Waters, who encouraged Roan to embrace her inner thespian and give acting a try. More from Deadline John Waters Back In Director's Chair For 'Liarmouth; Indie Icon Writing/Helming for Village Roadshow Entertainment Chappell Roan Will Perform At Elton John's Oscars Party Pedro Almodóvar To Receive 50th Chaplin Award From Film At Lincoln Center; Dua Lipa And John Waters Among Presenters 'I met John Waters last night, which was insane,' she told W Magazine. 'One of my idols! And I was talking about how there are only so many 'firsts' you can have with your career.' Roan continued, 'And he said, 'No, no, no—there are all the firsts to go through when you become an actress!' And I said, 'I'm not an actress—what are you talking about?' He said, 'Every singer is an actress!' And I was like, okay, maybe I am! Damn! If John Waters says I'm an actress, maybe I am!' After breaking out with her 2023 debut studio album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, Roan won her first Grammy this year for Best New Artist. Meanwhile, Waters' two-decade hiatus from filmmaking after his 2004 satire A Dirty Shame was interrupted when Village Roadshow Entertainment optioned his novel Liarmouth: A Feel-Bad Romance in 2022, with Waters set to write and direct. Although Waters said in April 2024 that he had a good script in place, with Aubrey Plaza onboard to star as the titular Marsha 'Liarmouth' Sprinkle, they 'don't have the money to make it.' In November, he revealed that the adaptation is no longer happening. Chappell Roan: 'There's a new path for girls breaking the rules'

After a year that saw her go from breakout artist to award-winning star, Chappell Roan has one word for what makes her stand out: "Fearlessness".Speaking to BBC Radio 1's Jack Saunders, the Pink Pony Club singer says she's not afraid to do her own thing when it comes to her artistry. Known for her drag aesthetic, extravagant costumes and punchy lyrics, Chappell's also shown she's fearless outside of her music, more than once coming under fire for speaking out on issues close to her heart. "I think that's so needed," she says. "To be able to break the rules." And she doesn't think she's alone in pushing the boundaries, saying she admires the likes of Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX, who she'll be headlining Primavera festival with this summer. She describes the three of them as the "Powerpuff Girls" of pop."I don't think that any of us were thinking of: 'What's going to change music? What's going to really blow peoples' minds?'," Chappell, 27, says, about releasing music last year."I think all of us made our albums based on what blows our own minds."That's why I think it works so well for all of us because we're doing our own thing."Let there be a new path for girls who want to break the rules." The US singer's spoken before about being comfortable pushing boundaries, telling the BBC "I'd be more successful if I wore a muzzle" after making headlines last also sworn at paparazzi on the red carpet, criticised fans' "creepy" behaviour, cancelled shows last minute and was branded "disingenuous" by a music executive after calling for musicians to get more support from their labels. But after success over the past year, she feels together with Charli and Sabrina, they can shape the debut, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, saw her named best new artist at the Grammy's as well as Radio 1's Sound of 2025. Charli XCX's summer-defining Brat won best album at the Brits, was recognised at the Grammy's and also earned a Mercury Prize nomination. Meanwhile singles Espresso and Please Please Please from Sabrina's Short 'n' Sweet album broke records, dominated the charts and won a grammy for best pop vocal alongside them at Primavera Sound in Barcelona was an unmissable opportunity, Chappell says. "I came out of retirement to play that show," she says. "I was like, I'm retiring for half of the year and I decided to come out."It's so cool, it's like a pop girly festival." Comparisons have often been drawn between Chappell Roan and Lady she says the Abracadabra singer has been a huge inspiration."One of the first songs I downloaded on my iPod was Bad Romance."Talk about fearless."But it was Gaga's 2009 track Alejandro, and accompanying music video full of religious imagery, that Chappell says started her on the route to becoming the artist she is now."I could not believe her," she says."Whenever I watched Alejandro, I thought I was doing something bad as a Christian. I was like, 'oh my God, this is a sin'."And then a fire lit in me and I was like, no, this is actually heaven, this is actually where I'm meant to be."Lady Gaga's just announced a tour in the wake of her new album Mayhem, which will mark her first North American and European run since 2022. "It was Gaga, and witnessing her at the age that I was, that was a domino effect to where I am now," Chappell says."Talk about turning new territory. It's so inspirational." Sapphics Provided Much-Needed Bright Spots This Week

We've reached the end of another week. But before we clock out for the weekend, we're giving credit where it's due. Sapphics are the latest champions in our Winner of the Week series. Amid the many horrors, a few bright spots shine. These beacons of hope, these lighthouses promising safe harbor… are called lesbians. Thank you, lesbians. As Billy Eichner once said: let's go, lesbians! Seriously, we'd be lost without the sapphics right now. Gabby Windey and Robby Hoffman kicked off the year by getting surprise-married in Vegas, deciding to tie the knot as they fled the devastating Los Angeles wildfires. (They kept the news a secret until this week.) All products featured on Glamour are independently selected by Glamour editors. Celebrity News Gabby Windey and Robby Hoffman Got Married in a Secret Las Vegas Ceremony The couple had just evacuated from the LA fires. 'My dream is coming true. I want to be married to her—I don't care how,' Hoffman recently told Cosmopolitan of their somewhat spur-of-the-moment plan, which culminated in a walk down the aisle to 'HOT TO GO!' by Chappell Roan (more on her in a sec). 'I just love being with Robby, so knowing that I got her one-on-one to celebrate this beautiful night, I could cry. It was joy,' said Windey. I could cry too, Gabby. Also walking the hall of sapphic power coupledom are Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus of Boygenius, who are officially, publicly, official, as of March 18. 'From us to you, we are in love,' Dacus told People after months of speculation. She's also got a new album out that, for the first time, uses female pronouns instead of the ambiguous 'you' to describe the love interest in her music, an openness that Dacus describes as 'intimidating' but is also so lovely. It's a trajectory that Chappell Roan can certainly relate to, which brings us to the biggest gift the givers have given us: 'The Giver.' Yes, living and loving vicariously through our favorite couples is a time-honored tradition, but other people's joy isn't actually ours to borrow. Their music, on the other hand? Inject it straight into my veins. All products featured on Glamour are independently selected by Glamour editors. New Here From the Donut Shop to a World Tour: Chappell Roan Is Doing Pop Her Way "I haven't even written my best song yet," the singer-songwriter tells *Glamour*. Though her album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess was everywhere last year, it was actually a 2023 release; the one and only song Roan put out in 2024 was the anthemic 'Good Luck, Babe!,' a defiant and rollicking piece of pop about a queer woman in denial. For 2025, the vibe is a bit different. 'The Giver' skips right over the to-come-out-or-not-to-come-out-that-is-the question and gets to the point. 'I just think a lesbian country song is really funny, so I wrote that,' said Roan. Happy Women's History Month indeed. Alexa, play the trailer for The Wedding Banquet! With queer rights (and, let's be real, human rights) in a precarious position politically, we won't be so bold as to say that the joy of a few is evidence of some national sea change. But this art, these relationships, this moment can be a form of connection, escapism, maybe even therapy at a time when that's exactly what we need. Positive representation of women in love with each other is something to celebrate. And it is progress. Twenty-five years ago we had the performative (i.e., fake) queerness of t.A.T.u., the misunderstood Britney-Madonna kiss, the questionable lessons of Chasing Amy. Fifteen years ago, naughty novelty fueled Katy Perry's 'I Kissed A Girl.' In 2025, is queerness totally normalized? Depends where you are. But at least if there's a girl on stage singing or talking about being in love with another girl, it's because she actually is. Originally Appeared on Glamour
