Chappell Roan predicts five-year wait 'at least' for second album

Chappell Roan says fans will have "at least" a five-year wait for her second album. The 27-year-old singer has not begun work on her follow-up to 2023's viral hit The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess yet, and anticipates it taking her a fair amount of time to complete, because she can't just "pump it out". She told Vogue magazine: 'The second project doesn't exist yet. 'There is no album. There is no collection of songs.' She continued: 'It took me five years to write the first one, and it's probably going to take at least five to write the next. I'm not that type of writer that can pump it out. 'I don't think I make good music whenever I force myself to do anything. I see some comments sometimes, like, 'She's everywhere except that damn studio.' Even if I was in the studio 12 hours a day, every single day, that does not mean that you would get an album any faster.' The Pink Pony Club hitmaker - who has since released the singles Good Luck, Babe!, The Giver and The Subway - also insisted social media will have no role in her art. She bemoaned: 'Socials harm the f*** out of me and my art. I'm not doing that to myself anymore. 'I've never written an album where I don't have Instagram or anything. The album process is purely, only mine. No one on TikTok gets to see it.' Chappell debuted her latest track, The Subway, at the 2024 Governors Ball, and it has since become a fan-favourite at her concerts, with her fans patiently waiting for the track to land on streaming platforms. The song was finally released on August 1, to fans' delight, but Chappell wasn't sure if she wanted to release it at all. She told Las Culturistas in April: "I've been banging my head against the wall with The Subway, because… some songs just work live — certain things work live — and they don't work in the studio. 'For The Subway, it's just going to feel different, and different doesn't always mean worse…You just have to really take yourself out of it and be like, 'This is different and that's okay.''

Chappell Roan is happy to be off social media

Chappell Roan feels happier without social media. The 27-year-old singer revealed earlier this year that she has deleted social media platforms from her phone to protect herself from harmful comments and believes that it will benefit her on a personal and musical level. Chappell told Vogue: "Socials harm the f*** out of me and my art. I'm not doing that to myself anymore. "I've never written an album where I don't have Instagram or anything. The album process is purely, only mine. No one on TikTok gets to see it." The Subway hitmaker's 2023 debut album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess has become a sleeper hit over the past couple of years but Chappell warned fans that they could be waiting a long time for a follow-up record. Chappell said: "The second project doesn't exist yet. "It took me five years to write the first one, and it's probably going to take at least five years to write the next. I'm not that type of writer than can pump it out." The Pink Pony Club artist added: "I don't think I make good music whenever I force myself to do anything. I see some comments sometimes, like, 'She's everywhere except that damn studio.' Even if I was in the studio like 12 hours a day, every single day, that does not mean that you would get an album any faster." Roan has previously spoken of her discomfort at the recognition that comes with her musical success but currently feels as though she is in a good place as she prepares to play shows across the US later this year. The star - whose real name is Kayleigh Rose Amstutz - said: "This pace is good right now. This feels good and manageable. I feel like, for the first time in over a year. I can finally be excited about going to work and doing my job." Chappell admitted recently that criticism from trolls hurts her more than she lets on and has started to feel personal. Asked if she cared about the backlash , the Hot To Go singer said in conversation with SZA for Interview Magazine: "I didn't, until people started hating me for me and not for my art. "When it's not about my art anymore, it's like, 'They hate me because I'm Kayleigh, not because they hate the songs that I make.' That's when it changed."

Chappell Roan Gives Second Album Update: 'There Is No Album'

Chappell Roan may be counting down all of the days 'til you're just another girl on the if you're counting down the days until she drops a new album, you might have to rethink your strategy. In a new interview celebrating the release of her newest single, 'Subway,' Chappell gave an update on her second album—and it's not exactly encouraging. 'The second project doesn't exist yet,' Chappell recently told Vogue. 'There is no album. There is no collection of songs.' So, that's a definite no on a new album, and a likely no on any hopes of a mixtape or EP to tide us over. I think I speak for all Chappell fans when I say, we're not mad, we're just disappointed for our playlists. Though, we really shouldn't be, because the Grammy winner has plenty of very good reasons for taking her time. Her debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess was only released two years ago, and she's essentially been performing it and promoting it ever since. Yes, she's dropped a few songs in the last year or so—'Good Luck, Babe!,' 'The Giver,' and now 'The Subway'—but three singles does not a new album make. You know what does make an album, according to Chappell? Time. 'It took me five years to write the first one, and it's probably going to take at least five to write the next. I'm not that type of writer that can pump it out,' she told Vogue. As for all the fans begging her to get back in the studio, Chappell says she's seen the memes, but you should know, it doesn't help much. 'I don't think I make good music whenever I force myself to do anything,' she said. 'I see some comments sometimes, like, 'She's everywhere except that damn studio.' Even if I was in the studio 12 hours a day, every single day, that does not mean that you would get an album any faster.' Oh, and you also shouldn't expect a lot of updates on how that second album is coming along, either. 'The album process is purely, only mine,' she told the mag. 'No one on TikTok gets to see it.'

Chappell Roan says, ‘There is no album'

Chappell Roan may be dominating the pop scene with her live performances and breakout singles, but fans hoping for a sophomore album anytime soon are in for a long wait. In a new interview from the set of her 'The Subway' music video, the Midwest Princess singer revealed that her next album doesn't even exist in concept yet. 'There is no album,' she told Vogue. 'There is no collection of songs.' Roan's debut album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, released in 2023, took five years to create and she expects the second to take just as long. 'I'm not that type of writer that can pump it out,' she explained. 'Even if I was in the studio 12 hours a day, every single day, that does not mean that you would get an album any faster.' Her latest single, 'The Subway,' has been in the works for over a year and was first performed live at Gov Ball in 2024. According to Roan, she held off releasing it because of personal struggles. 'It was just too painful,' she said. 'I was just too angry and scared, just about my life, to put it out.' Now in a more stable headspace, Roan credits part of her growth to stepping away from social media. 'Socials harm the fuck out of me and my art,' she said bluntly. 'The album process is purely, only mine. No one on TikTok gets to see it.' Though Roan faces fan pressure for more music, her refusal to rush the process mirrors recent industry debates, such as the backlash to Sydney Sweeney's American Eagle campaign—where authenticity and intention are at the centre of public conversation. Roan, at least, is staying true to her pace, even if it means silence between singles.

Chappell Roan's ballad 'The Subway' finally released on streaming platforms

After a year, "The Subway" is finally here! Chappell Roan has been teasing the single for over a year, first performing it at the Governors Ball Music Festival in New York City in 2024. The "Good Luck, Babe!" hitmaker released the studio version of the track on Friday, her third single since her debut album "The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess." On Instagram, Chappell thanked fans for waiting until the song was ready. "I'm very proud of this song & what a journey she has been on," she wrote. Obviously not knowing this really chaotic year would follow the [Governors Ball] performance, it didn't really leave me the time to build the world the song deserved. But finally we are here," she added. She said it was worth it to "make sure everything was absolutely right." The release of "The Subway" comes after 'The Giver,' which came out in March. Among Chappell's other hits include 'Hot to Go,' 'Pink Pony Club,' and 'Red Wine Supernova.' Chappell was named Best New Artist at the 2025 Grammy Awards in February. —JCB, GMA Integrated News
