The Sporting News ranks Marcus Freeman as one of the best head coaches in the country
The Sporting News ranks Marcus Freeman as one of the best head coaches in the country The credit for Notre Dame football's Marcus Freeman is starting to roll in, as The Sporting News has ranked him as its No. 4 head coach in the country. It was a big leap for the Irish's lead man, as he was ranked No. 22 last year, but showed that his team is capable of competing for championships and has staying power. Bill Bender, who compiled the list said that they weren't about to 'second-guess' the move up. With 24 wins over the last two seasons, and an impressive 7-1 against top-25 teams in 2024, Bender was compelled to move Freeman near the top of the list. Only Georgia's Kirby Smart, Ohio State's Ryan Day, and Clemson's Dabo Swinney were ahead of him on the rankings. It makes perfect sense, as they are the only active head coaches who have won a national championships. Checking in on our old friend, former Notre Dame and current LSU head coach Brian Kelly was No. 9 on this list, falling from No. 5 last year. With Freeman in charge of the Irish program, it seems like its only a matter of time before they break though and end the championship drought that has lasted since 1988.

Browns' Garrett wins another prestigious postseason award
BEREA, Ohio (WKBN) — Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett was named The Sporting News 2024 Defensive Player of the Year. It is the second consecutive year that he won the award. According to a release from the team, Garrett is the first Browns player to be The Sporting News Player of the Year in consecutive seasons since RB Jim Brown in 1957 and 1958. Garrett and each of the recipients for the Sporting News' awards were voted on by peers from around the league. The reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year surpassed 100 career sacks in Week 16 and became the 45th player to do so in NFL history. Garrett also is the first player since 1982 to have 100 career sacks prior to his 29th birthday. Alongside his 14 sacks, he totaled 28 quarterback hits, had a league-high 22 tackles for loss and 84 quarterback pressures – the third-most in the league. He added one pass defensed, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. Garrett, who is under contract through the 2026 campaign, finished the season with the second-most sacks in the NFL with 14. He became the first player in NFL history to reach 14 or more sacks in four consecutive seasons. Garrett's 102.5 career sacks are also the most by a Brown all-time.
