Ahmed al-Degwy's family has doubts about his suicide: Amr Adib

Egyptian TV host Amr Adib, the presenter of 'al-Hekaya' (The Story) show, revealed details of a phone call he had with Amr al-Degwy, the brother of the late Ahmed al-Degwy, who reportedly died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. During his program on Monday evening, he said he had a very difficult call with Amr al-Degwy, whose wife confirmed that he hadn't slept for days. According to Adib, Amr al-Degwy had told him that his late brother Ahmed was the family's pride and joy. 'I asked him, 'Do you have any doubts about his death?' He said, 'Of course,' without thinking much about it. He told me that Ahmed had just returned from his trip and was in a good mood and believed the crisis could be resolved. But when he arrived in Egypt, he was agitated and said that someone was watching him.' Adib continued, quoting Amr: 'Ahmed asked me to go to him, and messages were sent to try to reach a solution with the other party, but the answer was: 'No solution, no reconciliation. This is our mother's revenge, and we must take it back,' referring to the late Mona al-Degwy. Adib added 'Amr said that during the washing and autopsy, he learned that Ahmed had committed suicide with his left hand, even though he is right-handed, not left-handed. He said they were firmly convinced that he had been murdered.' Adib noted that the production team of the show contacted the other party's lawyer, but the response was that no statements would be made until the mourning period ends, and that a response is expected later. The funeral prayer for Ahmed al-Degwy, the grandson of Nawal el-Degwy, Chair of the Board of Trustees of October University for Modern Sciences and Arts, who died on Sunday from a gunshot wound inside his apartment in 6th of October City, was held at the MSA University's Mosque following the noon prayer. The body was then buried in the family cemetery. Edited translation from Al-Masry Al-Youm

has Egypt entered a danger zone?

The professor of Geology at Benha University Zakaria Hamimi, discussed concerns of Egypt entering an earthquake zone following recent earthquakes off the Greek coast, felt by citizens in Egypt on May 14 and May 22. In a phone interview with TV host Amr Adib on the 'al-Hekaya' (The Story) show on MBC Masr on Saturday, Hamimi said that the source of the recent earthquakes is the Hellenic Arc region of Crete. This region is an active seismic belt, and earthquakes occur at great depth, he said, which mitigates their effects. The professor noted that 'The devastating 1992 (Cairo) earthquake had its epicenter in Dahshur, which is why its impact was so significant.' Hamimi emphasized that Egypt is completely isolated from seismic belts, assuring, 'Egypt is immune to dangerous earthquakes.' He explained that sometimes the delta's terrain amplifies the magnitude of an earthquake, which is why citizens feel it, but the earthquake's magnitude is less than that of its epicenter. Egyptian Premier League may be canceled this season: TV host Amr Adib

Egyptian TV host Amr Adib, the presenter of 'al-Hekaya' (The Story) show broadcast, said there is a possibility that the Egyptian Premier League will be canceled this season or that sporting activities will be suspended due to the Pyramids FC dispute. During his show on Friday, Adib said: 'Some were skeptical of my words, but in the past few hours, we have seen official statements discussing the possibility of suspending sporting activities, not announcing the league champion and postponing it, or canceling the league this season altogether.' 'It's clear that Pyramids FC is currently sending correspondence and complaints to international bodies, complaining about what's happening in the Egyptian League. When I spoke about this recently, the probability of it happening was 10 percent, but now it's 50 percent.' Adib concluded, 'Apart from the rivalry between Ahly and Zamalek, and who will win the league, I care about achieving justice. Egyptian football has become poorly represented compared to the leagues around us, and we are unable to organize a proper sporting competition.' The crisis dates to March 11, after Al-Ahly forfeited its Egyptian Premier League match against Zamalek following complaints that its request for a foreign referee were not met. The Pyramids FC in April had withdrawn their request for foreign referees for the Al Ahly match following the Egyptian Professional Football Clubs Association's recent decision not to deduct points from Al Ahly at the end of the season, stemming from the derby match controversy against Zamalek.

Trump's attack on Harvard's foreign students targets key revenue for US universities

Because international students are more likely to pay full tuition, they essentially subsidise other students who receive aid. PHOTO: SOPHIE PARK/NYTIMES WASHINGTON - The Trump administration's latest blow against Harvard University – cutting off its ability to enroll foreign students – rippled throughout higher education on May 22, because it aims at a major source of revenue for hundreds of schools across the United States. Because international students are more likely to pay full tuition, they essentially subsidise other students who receive aid, said educational consultant Chuck Ambrose, former president of the University of Central Missouri. The administration's move to stop foreign enrollment is a huge blow to Harvard and sends a message to other universities: 'You could be next,' said Mr Robert Kelchen, a professor at the University of Tennessee who researches university finances. Ms Kristi Noem, Trump's homeland security adviser, said as much on May 22 during an appearance on The Story with Martha MacCallum on Fox News. Ms Noem was asked if the administration was considering similar moves at other universities, including Columbia University in New York. 'Absolutely, we are,' she responded. 'This should be a warning to every other university to get your act together.' Harvard's 6,800 international students make up 27 per cent of its total enrollment. In 2023, foreign students made up an even higher share at 43 other schools with at least 1,000 students, according to data from the National Center for Education Statistics. At Columbia University, which the Trump administration accuses of antisemitic policies, foreign students made up 39 per cent of total enrollment in 2023, the NCES data shows. At 246 other schools with an enrollment of at least 1,000, at least 10 per cent of students were from outside the US. The May 22 announcement comes as universities are already scrambling to make up for huge federal cuts in research funding. Harvard, which Trump administration says has failed to address antisemitism and ethnic harassment on campus, has seen nearly US$3 billion (S$3.9 billion) in federal contracts and research grants frozen or ended in recent weeks. Neither Harvard nor Columbia had comment on the financial impact of the latest move. 'It's just another financial hit on top of several hits that have already come for big research universities,' Mr Kelchen said. 'At this point the only thing that hasn't been touched is student financial aid.' REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.
