Although six-time All-Star forward Jimmy Butler III has forced his way out of two of his most recent franchises in spectacularly acrimonious fashion, he remains a terrific two-way talent on the hardwood. The 35-year-old's midseason addition galvanized the Golden State Warriors, returning the club back into pseudo-title contention instantly while transforming its perimtere defense. During a new conversation with The San Francisco Standard's Tim Kawakami in a recent episode of his podcast "The TK Show," Warriors head coach Steve Kerr revealed that Butler's former coach, Erik Spoelstra, had glowing things to say about the man who led Miami to two NBA Finals appearances in four years. Kerr and Spoesltra have both been on Team USA men's basketball program's coaching staff during the 2021 and '24 summer Olympic games. Kerr took over from Hall of Fame ex-San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich to serve as the U.S.'s head coach last summer. "I believed him and he was right. Within a couple of days of his arrival, Jimmy was so easy to speak with," Kerr said. "He reminded me of Andre [Iguodala] with the basketball intellect, but also the interest in the world perspective and the maturity. "We'll be in the weeds ... trying to make it all make sense. The goals will be the goals — trying to win a championship. I stand on that 100 percent." What Spoelstra told Kerr about Butler immediately after Warriors trade

What Spoelstra told Kerr about Butler immediately after Warriors trade originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area Despite some concern about how Jimmy Butler would fit into the Warriors' culture, coach Steve Kerr's mind was at ease. Advertisement That's because his good friend and longtime Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra reassured him before Golden State acquired the six-time NBA All-Star at the February trade deadline. 'Erik Spoelstra told me immediately, 'He's going to be great for you.' And I know Spo really well from the last couple of summers and I trust him,' Kerr told Tim Kawakami on 'The TK Show.' 'I believed him and he was right. Within a couple of days of his arrival, Jimmy was so easy to speak with. 'He reminded me of Andre [Iguodala] with the basketball intellect, but also the interest in the world perspective and the maturity. It was really fun to get to know Jimmy right away and to see the impact he had on our team and our locker room.' There was plenty of chatter about Butler's locker room fit in Golden State since the veteran forward's relationship with his previous team, the Heat, and particularly team president Pat Riley, soured. Advertisement Things got so bad that Butler was suspended multiple times by Miami after missing a team flight, walking out of a shootaround, and other actions deemed as 'detrimental' to the team. And given that it wasn't the first time Butler left a team on bad terms, there were reasonable worries for the Warriors. But those concerns immediately were put to rest upon Butler's arrival, as his impact quite literally did the opposite as he provided a rejuvenated energy to Golden State both on and off the floor. His relationship with Buddy Hield in particular warmed the hearts of Dub Nation. 'He was an absolute dream,' Kerr said. 'I know everything that happened in Miami would not have suggested that, but I can only base Jimmy's impact and his personality and all that stuff on my experience. And he was the model citizen. Just an amazing guy to coach these last few months.' Download and follow the Dubs Talk Podcast

Golden State Warriors' Steve Kerr provides honest take on Jonathan Kuminga conundrum

Golden State Warriors' Steve Kerr provides honest take on Jonathan Kuminga conundrum Jonathan Kuminga's future is currently a hot topic among Golden State Warriors fans. The explosive forward is heading toward restricted free agency. The Warriors will have the opportunity to match any offer sheet Kuminga signs, or, they could look to maximize their return with a sign-and-trade deal. In recent months, Steve Kerr has received criticism for his handling of Kuminga. The fourth year forward struggled to earn a consistent role in the rotation, despite having multiple impressive stretches when trusted with legitimate playing time. In a May 21 appearance on "The TK Show" podcast with Tim Kawakami of The Athletic, Kerr revealed his reasoning for Kuminga's inconsistent role, and the challenges the Warriors head coach currently faces. "All I do is I coach the team every year and try to put the puzzle together the best I can," Kerr said. "I've, you know, it's a tricky one because Jonathan obviously is gifted and wants to play a bigger role and wants to play more. And, I've been asked to win. Right now, he's not a guy who I can say that I'm going to play 38 minutes with the roster that we mean he's not a really good player. Doesn't mean he's not talented. It just means the fit. And with the roster that we have, it's can talk about spacing, usage rate, and all that stuff. But the game is about puzzle fitting. It's about five guys complimenting one another at both ends of the floor. So all I do is, you know, I try to win." Kerr's comments are fair. His current remit is to help the Warriors win another championship. Therefore, his decisions must be aligned with giving the franchise its best shot at success. If Kuminga doesn't seamlessly fit into that vision, it makes sense that his role would be limited. As such, it will be interesting to see how the Warriors approach Kuminga's upcoming free agency. After all, there will likely be multiple suitors willing to make a sign-and-trade deal. This post originally appeared on Warriors Wire! Follow us on Facebook and Twitter!

Deebo Samuel: 'Nothing but love' for 49ers after trade

March 4 - Deebo Samuel, dealt by the San Francisco 49ers to the Washington Commanders over the weekend, took to social media on Monday to clarify his feelings about his now former team and his conditioning in 2024. Following a disappointing 2024 season, the veteran wide receiver requested a trade, and the 49ers eventually obliged. He posted Monday on X, "49ers know where I stand with them and it's nothing but love. Love John (Lynch, the general manager) and Kyle (Shanahan, the head coach) to death no bad blood no way shape or form. They know I'm more than appreciative of everything they done for me as a player and a man nothing but love." Samuel also responded to a quote from The Athletic's Tim Barrows speaking on The TK Show podcast. Barrows said, "(Samuel's weight in 2024) got really high and there may have been reasons for that. Not able to work out because of pneumonia. Not able to work out because of injuries. But that's a concern. I think the 49ers had that concern the minute he showed up in Santa Clara in 2019 and it never fully went away." Samuel, whose listed playing weight is 215 pounds, posted in response on X, "225 to be exact. ... Can't wait till this season start. Fresh start new Bo" Last season, Samuel finished with 51 catches for 670 yards and three touchdowns in addition to 42 carries for 136 yards and one score. The total yardage was the lowest figure of his career, outside of the 2020 campaign when he appeared in only seven games. Samuel, 27, was a first-team All-Pro in 2021, when he had 1,770 total yards and 14 total touchdowns. In 81 career NFL games (73 starts), all for the 49ers, Samuel has 334 receptions for 4,792 yards and 22 touchdowns. He has produced 1,143 yards and 20 TDs on 202 carries. Washington dealt a fifth-round draft pick to San Francisco in exchange for Samuel.

Lacob understands, respects KD's rejection of Warriors trade

Lacob understands, respects KD's rejection of Warriors trade originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area The Warriors' pursuit of former franchise superstar and current Phoenix Suns forward Kevin Durant was well-documented ahead of the thrilling Feb. 6 NBA trade deadline. And a deal seemingly was near before Golden State ultimately landed fellow star forward Jimmy Butler, as a trade for Durant never saw the light of day due to the 15-time NBA All-Star preferring to avoid a midseason move, for the sake of any new team he would've joined, as he explained Wednesday on Draymond Green's podcast. Warriors owner Joe Lacob on Wednesday also chimed in on the conversation in an appearance on The San Francisco Standard reporter Tim Kawakami's 'The TK Show' podcast. 'Well, I heard that, obviously,' Lacob told Kawakami about Durant declining a Bay Area reunion. 'But Jimmy Butler also said that he didn't want to be part of the Warriors. So, I think you have to take with a grain of salt when you hear something. Now, when you hear it directly from Mr. Durant … that's legit, it's coming from the horse's mouth. 'But there's always usually a motive for these things. Somebody wants to get paid or not paid, somebody wants to influence somebody to trade them [to] a certain place. It doesn't always mean it's black and white. And so, maybe someone like Kevin said – I heard … he didn't want to be traded in the middle of a season. … He decides his own fate. I understand, with respect to him.' Lacob understands Durant's decision and acknowledges that a star of his caliber writes their own story. Maybe the Warriors will make another push for Durant this summer, or maybe they won't. But it's up to Durant at the end of the day. Additionally, Lacob didn't confirm nor deny that Golden State didn't trade for Durant – who doesn't have a no-trade clause, unlike Suns teammate Bradley Beal – because of the former Warrior's declination. 'I don't think I should comment on another team's player any more than what has been speculated out there,' Lacob told Kawakami. 'You can conclude whatever you want.' Do with that what you will. Lacob did confirm, though, that, as many knew, Golden State was all-in on a big-time acquisition at the trade deadline. Butler evidently was and remains him. 'Obviously, we had some very large discussions,' Lacob told Kawakami. 'We at least had discussions to explore a number of players; it's been reported, I don't think inaccurately – it's accurate. And we were trying to do something significant. 'If we're going to do something, let's do something significant. And if we could do it, great. If not, we have to play it out and see what happens this summer.' 'It's easier, I think, generally, to do something in the summer than it is at the trade deadline. It's just more optionality.' The Warriors might again be big-game hunters during the looming offseason. However, those discussions are far away, as Golden State has won six of its first seven games with Butler and is back in contention for another Larry O'Brien Trophy.
