Wimbledon star doesn't hold back as she comments on tournament's strict dress code

Wimbledon star doesn't hold back as she comments on tournament's strict dress code Elina Svitolina spoke about the dress code at the All England Club as she progressed to the second round of Wimbledon after a straight-sets victory over Anna Bondar Elina Svitolina spoke about the Wimbledon dress code (Image: Hannah Peters, Getty Images ) Wimbledon star Elina Svitolina has expressed her strong admiration for the championship's iconic all-white dress policy. The Ukrainian ace sailed into the second round following a commanding straight sets triumph (6-3, 6-1) over Hungary's Anna Bondar on Monday. Having made it to the Wimbledon semi-finals in 2019 and 2023, the 30-year-old is intent on advancing even further at the prestigious Grand Slam. ‌ A clear fan of the historic tennis competition, Svitolina donned a T-shirt featuring a nod to the classic strawberries and cream after her first round win at the All England Club. While former Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard has previously criticised the strict dress code, which Emma Raducanu was claimed to have broken earlier this year, Svitolina has voiced her fondness for the traditional aesthetic. ‌ When quizzed by The Tennis Channel about her favourite Wimbledon tradition, Svitolina didn't hesitate. "The dress code, I love dressing up in white," she declared. "You know, being so classy. It's iconic. I love my outfit this year and it just looks so perfect, so beautiful. When you look around, everyone is so classy. Yeah, I just really love this tradition." Wimbledon has long-standing all-white clothing rules, dating back to the 1880s when visible sweat stains were deemed unseemly. All competitors are required to wear almost entirely white attire, which has already led to outfit changes at this year's tournament. Article continues below Svitolina is a fan of the all-white dress code (Image:) An exception is granted for female players who can wear dark undershorts as long as they are not longer than their shorts or skirt. According to Wimbledon's official guidelines, the all-white dress code does not permit off-white or cream clothing. A coloured trim around the neckline or sleeves is acceptable, provided it is no wider than one centimetre. Shoes must also be white, including laces and soles, and the same regulations apply to caps, headbands, bandanas, wristbands and socks. ‌ In 2022, the All England Club announced that female players could wear darker undershorts. However, Bouchard, a Wimbledon finalist in 2014, shared her experiences of the stress faced by female players on their period before the rule was implemented. "Unfortunately we cannot plan our own tennis matches, that is something completely out of our control, Bouchard told the Not Alone podcast with Valeria Lipovetsky in 2024. "The tournament decides the schedule and when you play, so there's no chance for that at all. I've definitely experienced really bad period cramps, pain, and I remember having that the day before the US Open in New York. Bouchard spoke about the problems with the previous Wimbledon dress code (Image: GLYN KIRK/AFP via Getty Images ) ‌ "And I was like, 'Thank god this is just a practice day today, because if I had to play my match today it would be really hard.' I did play right away the next day so it wasn't the best but it's just something we have to deal with. We cannot control the schedule so it's just luck. "And I know some of the girls on tour also get a little worried when it comes to Wimbledon because you have to wear white. So it just makes you a little more self-conscious if you're... you know. 'It's tough, but now they've changed the rules where you can wear like a different-coloured undergarment – so your ball shorts under the dress can be a different colour. But that's a super-recent rule." She is set to face Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the next round.

Stefanos Tsitsipas retires in first round due to injury; Valentin Royer advances at Wimbledon 2025

Stefanos Tsitsipas, star tennis player suffered a disappointing exit from the Wimbledon 2025 opener on Monday. In the game played at the All England Lawn Tennis Club in London, he retired during his first-round match against French qualifier Valentin Royer due to a back injury. Royer led 6-3, 6-2 when Tsitsipas withdrew after 74 minutes. He was visibly suffering due to discomfort. The 26-year-old Greek struggled with his movement and serve, landing just 43 percent of his first serves. A medical timeout in the second set offered little relief, forcing Tsitsipas to end his Wimbledon campaign early. He was forced to leave with a 19-13 record for 2025. Notably, last week, Jannik Sinner's coach, Darren Cahill, had pointed out Tsitsipas' back struggles during practice, hinting at the issue's severity. For Valentin Royer, ranked No. 99 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings, this victory was a career highlight. Competing in only his second Grand Slam main-draw match, the 23-year-old Frenchman made the best out of the match against Tsitsipas. Royer, who lost in the first round at Roland Garros last month, showcased composure and aggression in his Wimbledon debut. 'I'm just trying to stay focused and play my game,' Royer said post-match. He will now be geared up to face compatriot Adrian Mannarino in the second round. Coached by former Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic, Tsitsipas became the second men's seed to fall on Day 1, following Daniil Medvedev. His back injury raises concerns about his form, especially after a season of inconsistent results. As Royer celebrates his breakthrough, Tsitsipas faces a recovery period, hoping to return stronger for the hard-court swing. In the United States, matches will be available live on The Tennis Channel and ESPN. The viewers can also watch the live streaming on Fubo. For viewers in India, StarSports Network will broadcast the matches on television. Additionally, live streaming is available on the JioHotstar application.

‘Really shocked to see…': Jim Courier on Djokovic, Sinner and other top 20 stars playing in ATP Tournaments before French Open

With 13 out of the top 20 players in the world playing in the Geneva Open and Hamburg Open between May 17 to May 24 ahead of the French Open, it would mean that the likes of Novak Djovokic and world number one Jannik Sinner will not be travelling to France at least one week in advance. Four-time Grand Slam winner Jim Courier has criticised the top 20 players' move ahead of the French Open, which starts May 25 and finds this decision shocking. 'With someone like Jannik Sinner there is a lot of insurance at play. For Novak Djokovic, he needs the matches because he has not played, and he is going to try and do what he did last year, which is get two or three matches and maybe try and pull the cord with a little bit of match toughness. But I am really shocked honestly, to see some of the names on here,' Courier told The Tennis Channel. While the Hamburg Open will see the participation of eight players out of the top 20 in world rankings, including Sinner, the Geneva Open will see the participation of five players out of the top 20 in world rankings, including Djokovic. Hamburg Open remains an ATP 500 tournament while Geneva Open is an ATP 250 tournament. Courier finds the top players playing in these tournaments days ahead of the French Open as having some 'commercial aspect'. 'Let's set the table, these tournaments can pay appearance fees so some of these players will have accepted a big guarantee, I am talking hundreds of thousands of dollars just to show up and play and they don't have to win a match to get that money, so there is some commercial aspect to this. But the serious players who think they are going to win Roland Garros or challenge for Roland Garros, they do not play these tournaments,' added Courier. The former two-time French Open champion also shared how the new ATP 500 bonus pool could have played a part in players playing the Hamburg Open. 'One thing that is different this year, and this is the only time I have seen this, is that there is an ATP 500 tournament in Hamburg, which has been put into this section. That does not happen before Wimbledon. It does not happen before the US Open. There are (ATP) 250 tournaments around which you just don't see the top players playing. There is a new bonus pool for ATP 500 this year. Six players who play at least four of these ATP 500 tournaments will share $3 million in extra money, so there are substantial financial benefits for players to play who are in that conversation,' added Courier. Courier also warned players not to fall for the easy grab and miss out from ultimate glory. 'So there is a lot that goes into this. But one thing which I know is that there is no amount of appearance money or bonus money that can replicate the kind of money you make if you win Roland Garros. So be careful what you wish for. If you are going for the easy grab, you might miss out on the life-changing generational wealth that sits at the end of these tournaments,' concluded the American.
