'I was in Alexander Isak's shoes – balaclava-clad men confronted me at 3am'

There's plenty of tension around Alexander Isak's potential move from Newcastle to Liverpool this summer - evoking memories of Wayne Rooney's flirtations with leaving Manchester United Few footballers can relate to Alexander Isak's current situation better than Wayne Rooney. Like Isak, the Manchester United legend once found himself at the centre of his fanbase's fury - leading to a frightening situation involving multiple men in balaclavas. ‌ Back in 2010, Rooney told United he wanted to leave, having grown disillusioned with the club's direction. Whispers of moves to both Manchester City and Chelsea were rife, and the uncertainty surrounding his future was badly affecting his form, having scored just one Premier League goal by New Year's Day. ‌ Such was the outrage in United circles that several angry supporters turned up outside Rooney's house in the middle of the night in an apparent attempt to intimidate him. "We had a group of lads outside my house in balaclavas at 3am in the morning," he recalled, speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show. ‌ "It is scary. Coleen was sat up feeding Kai and she woke me up, we phoned the police and I went down. What they didn't know was that I was going in the next morning to sign a new deal. "I went down to say, 'What are you doing at this time in the morning, it is not right.' I think that they thought them coming to my house made me sign my new deal! "If you have frustration, I think there's banter, and fans will have a go at players on the pitch, but sometimes it goes too far. Turning up at players' houses, I think that is wrong." Rooney's standoff with United was quickly forgotten once he signed fresh terms. For Isak, though, a similar resolution feels far less likely. The 25-year-old Swede looks to have burned bridges at Newcastle by refusing to play as he pushes for a blockbuster move to Liverpool. With the Magpies holding firm on their £150million valuation, Isak has resorted to drastic measures - skipping the club's pre-season tour of Asia and pledging to never represent the club again, even if a move away doesn't materialise. ‌ While Rooney's own flirtation with the exit door ended in reconciliation, the former England captain believes that ship has sailed for Isak, and that a clean break might now suit all parties. "Isak is a top player," he said. "It is very difficult for him to stay at Newcastle - I have seen a lot of things with the club's fans saying he has gone about it the wrong way. ‌ "You don't know what they are saying at board level but you imagine they would want him to stay, because for Newcastle to lose Isak when they are trying to build and try and form a squad to challenge for the league - it is a big loss for them. "The difference now, with all the financial fair play and PSR, for Newcastle, it might benefit them to sell him to free up money, bring more players in and actually make the squad a little bit stronger. "For Isak as well, it is an opportunity to join Liverpool, who have just won the Premier League. It is such a huge opportunity for him." He quickly became the club's youngest-ever goalscorer aged 16 years and 342 days and was named the BBC's Young Sports Personality of the Year. The striker joined Manchester United in 2004 and spent 13 years at Old Trafford. He went on to make 559 appearances for the Red Devils and scored 253 goals. To this day he is still the club's all-time leading goalscorer. Following his spell with United, Rooney returned to Everton for a season. He also spent one-season stints with D.C. United and Derby County at the end of his career. As well as his impressive club career, Rooney is also England's second-highest goalscorer with 53 goals in 120 appearances, behind only Harry Kane. After hanging up his boots, the England icon turned to a career in management. He took charge of Derby County in 2020 and managed to just about save the club from relegation from the Championship at the end of his first season. However, with Derby handed a 21-point deduction the following campaign, he was unable to keep them up again and subsequently left. Then came a 15-month spell in charge of MLS side D.C. United. He failed to impress during his time in Washington and parted ways with the club at the end of the 2023 regular season. Rooney was controversially handed the Birmingham job in October 2023, replacing John Eustace with the club doing well and sixth in the Championship table. However, in 15 games he suffered nine defeats and managed just two wins. He was sacked in January 2024 with Birmingham down in 20th. The club were relegated to League One at the end of the campaign. He returned to management in May with Plymouth Argyle but managed just five wins in 25 games. The United legend now finds himself out of work once again. "And I don't think he really understood football that well. "But what he does understand is, he's a hard worker, we know that." 'I don't think he understood football' - Wayne Rooney hits back at 'unfair' Tom Brady comments questioning work ethic He added: "Listen, I respect Tom Brady massively. Advertisement "He's one of the greatest, if not the greatest athletes of all time and Birmingham do look like they're getting it right now, which is good. "And I think what they have done is got the players out that they needed to get out."

Friday briefing: Wayne Rooney hits back at ‘very unfair' Tom Brady

There has been plenty of movement in the transfer window with Newcastle and Nottingham Forest lining up moves. Wayne Rooney claims Birmingham minority owner Tom Brady's criticism of him during his spell as the club's manager was 'very unfair'. Rooney, sacked by Birmingham in January 2024 after less than three months in charge, said he was 'really disappointed with the comment' on his new podcast, The Wayne Rooney Show, which launches on Friday. NFL great Brady, who became a minority shareholder at Birmingham in August 2023, said he was 'a little worried about our head coach's work ethic' during a documentary after visiting Blues' training ground the following November. Speaking via his new show on the BBC, the ex-Everton and Manchester United striker said: 'I think Tom came in once, which was the day before a game where the days are a little bit lighter anyway, and I don't think he really understood football that well. 'But what he does understand is – he's a hard worker – we know that.' Rooney added: 'Football is not NFL – NFL works for three months a year. Players do need rest as well, so I think he's very unfair, the way he's come out and portrayed that.' Newcastle have agreed a fee for Aston Villa winger Jacob 24-year-old is due to travel to the north east for a medical after a deal in the region of £40million was agreed, the PA news agency understands. The prospective sale of Ramsey, who has made 167 appearances at Villa Park, will represent pure profit for Villa, who are walking a UEFA financial fair play and PSR tightrope and need to sell. Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest have agreed a £30million fee for Manchester City's James McAtee and a club-record £37m deal for Ipswich forward Omari Hutchinson. France Under-21 international Tel is the latest player to be targeted on social media after he missed a spot kick in Wednesday night's UEFA Super League penalty shoot-out defeat to Paris St Germain. A Kick It Out statement read: 'If you're a black player, it would be totally understandable to think, 'Why would I want to take a penalty?' That's the state of the game right now, and the sad fact is, it's nothing new. 'Players are routinely targeted with racism online and want action; we want action, too. Isak would not have done as well without our support: Howe

New Delhi: Ahead of Newcastle United's opening Premier League game against Aston Villa at Villa Park, head coach Eddie Howe has claimed Alexander Isak understands that he would have done as well had it not been for the club where he became a superstar. Newcastle reportedly turned down a bid in the region of 110 million Pounds from defending champions Liverpool but Isak remains determined to leave the club. "There has been no change. All my focus is on Aston Villa tomorrow. Isak's situation has been clear for a while and that will continue to be the case. I've had a great relationship with him, you need that partnership with every player. I have to work really closely with the player for his benefit, to try and improve them. I always want to be there for him. I don't think Isak would have done as well without that, his team mates, the supporters - he recognises that, he's an intelligent person." With the Alexander Isak transfer saga occupying much of the transfer talk in the ongoing window, former England captain Wayne Rooney also weighed in his thoughts on the situation, stating it will be very difficult for him to continue at Newcastle United. "Isak is a top player. It is very difficult for him to stay at Newcastle - I have seen a lot of things with the club's fans saying he has gone about it the wrong way. You don't know what they are saying at board level but you imagine they would want him to stay, because for Newcastle to lose Isak when they are trying to build and try and form a squad to challenge for the league - it is a big loss for them,' said Rooney on his new podcast ' The Wayne Rooney Show'
