Perth's best steak joints for any occasion

Perth They call themselves 'casual fine dining', which isn't a bad description for this excellent steakhouse tucked away in the middle of the buzzing Pirate Life brewery. Not only is their steak among the best in town, the other dishes on the menu do not let the side down — the smoked eggplant is pretty good, for a vegetable. A great spot for a buzzy night out. Best for: a night out with a group of friends. Perth 6Head. Credit: Supplied / TheWest With a sophisticated fit-out and a prime spot on Elizabeth Quay, this may be a top spot for the big end of town to do business over dinner, but for those who just want to eat top-notch steak, it's a go-to. It's pricey, but some things have to be. Best for: that important business lunch. Rib eye at Rockpool Bar & Grill. Credit: Instagram / RegionalHUB We love the intimate, low lighting, sleek fit-out and excellent service at this staple of Perth's fine-dining scene. Their woodfire grill turns out some of the best steaks in town, but they also don't slouch in the seafood department if you have dining companions who are more that way inclined. Best for: a romantic anniversary dinner. Perth Sentinel Bar & Grill. Credit: Supplied This gorgeous restaurant in the heart of the CBD makes us feel like we've taken a quick trip to New York — with the advantage of having grain-fed Aussie beef on the menu. The Chateaubriant for two people for $185 with 580g of beef, fried brussels sprouts with nduja crumb, maple carrots and almonds, Hasselback potatoes and an incredible red wine jus with pepper and brandy sauce is an excellent choice for a date to remember. Best for: a sophisticated celebration dinner. South Perth Nextdoor, South Perth. Credit: Lauren Sandle / TheWest Nextdoor? Next door to what? A butcher of course! This steak restaurant has a strong following thanks to their meaty offerings cooked on their parrilla grill over jarrah hardwood. Each steak is served with their excellent fire-roasted chimichurri. Best for: a date to really impress.

Cracking sale: Iconic Indiana Jones prop sells for $800k

One of the most famous props in cinema history that was previously owned by Princess Diana sold at auction yesterday during a week of fat cats splashing ridiculous cash on nostalgic items. The headline sale was the iconic bullwhip that was strapped to Harrison Ford's waist in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, with one bidder snapping it up for a staggering $809,000. A hefty price tag to become the newest owner of the whip, which was used during the Holy Grail trials that Ford's character goes through at the climax of 1989's Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. The whip has a royal background, with Ford giving it to Prince Charles, who then gifted it to Princess Diana. The princess passed it over it to the current anonymous owner, who is now much richer after selling it at the Summer Entertainment Auction being held all week by Heritage Auctions. Ruby slippers worn by Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz. Credit: TheWest 'The bull whip is the iconic symbol of an iconic character of cinema history, Indiana Jones, and has been a highlight of this auction,' Heritage executive vice-president Joe Maddalena said. The auction of famous movie props have been going for the past week, with the biggest sale coming on Wednesday after the Rosebud sled from Citizen Kane went for a staggering $22.6 million, making it one of the priciest props in movie history. Heritage said the nearly $US15 million bid for the Rosebud sled puts it second only to the near $50 million that Judy Garland's ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz fetched in December. If your pockets are feeling heavy, there are still plenty of items up for sale including Macaulay Culkin's knit snow cap from Home Alone, a Kurt Russell revolver from Wyatt Earp, a pair of Hattori Hanzo prop swords from Kill Bill Vol. 1 and a first edition set of Harry Potter novels signed by JK Rowling. -with AP

Harry Potter star cops driving ban

Star actress Emma Watson has had her license revoked after speeding in her university town, Oxford. The Harry Potter alum was caught driving at 61km/h in a 50km/h zone, and the BBC reported that Judge Arvind Sharma deducted three points from her license at the hearing on Wednesday. Watson had already lost nine points for other driving offences, and so when she lost the last three, she received an automatic six-month suspension of her license and was ordered to pay a fine of $2156. She did not attend the brief five minute hearing at High Wycombe Magistrates' Court. The actress, well known for her breakout role as Hermione Granger in the eight Harry Potter films, is now a student and has been studying a master's degree in creative writing at Oxford since 2023. She has also appeared in popular stand-a-lone films including The Perks of Being a Wallflower, The Circle, Beauty and the Beast and The Bling Ring. Her most recent film credit was for her role as Meg in Greta Gerwig's 2019 adaption of Little Women, starring alongside Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh, Meryl Streep, Laura Dern and Timothee Chalamet. A new television adaption of the Harry Potter book series in currently in production with HBO. Arabella Stanton has been cast as Hermione, alongside Dominic McLaughlin as Harry and Alastair Stout as Ron. Watson distanced herself from the Harry Potter franchise after a public feud with JK Rowling over transgender rights in 2020. JK Rowling posted a controversial tweet in 2020, which began a long history of advocating against transgender rights Credit: TheWest Rowling posted a tweet in 2020 about an article titled 'Creating a more equal post-Covid-19 world for people who menstruate' which said ''people who menstruate.' The tweet sparked backlash, and the author eventually published a 3600 word essay detailing her worries about 'new trans activism' and what she labelled 'the explosion in young women wishing to transition and also about the increasing numbers who seem to be detransitioning'. Following this, Watson spoke out in support of transgender people in a tweet where she said they 'deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned or told they aren't who they say they are'. Since then, Watson has not taken part in Harry Potter related media, save for her appearance in the reunion special 'Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts', which notably did not feature JK Rowling. Peter Falconio's parents speak out on death of son's killer

The parents of Peter Falconio say they still 'hold out hope' they will find their son despite his killer taking his secret of where his body is hidden to his grave. Bradley John Murdoch, 67, succumbed to throat cancer on Tuesday after being moved from jail in June to a hospital in Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. Murdoch was serving a life sentence for the murder of Mr Falconio, 28, and the assault and attempted kidnapping of his girlfriend Joanne Lees, now 51, on the Stuart Highway near Barrow Creek in July 2001. In a statement to 7NEWS on Wednesday, Mr Falconio's parents Luciano and Joan Falconio said: 'Upon hearing that Bradley John Murdoch had died our first feeling was of relief, it's like a weight that's been lifted.' 'The awful thing is our family's future with Peter was cruelly taken away. 'Today we instead focus on the three children we have left and our grandchildren.' The grieving parents added: 'We didn't have much faith, but we were hoping Bradley John Murdoch would reveal where Peter was before he died.' Peter Falconio and Joanne Lees. 'Finally, we wish to express our profound thanks to the Northern Territory Police for the support and continuing efforts to investigate our son's murder.' Falconio was travelling with his girlfriend Joanne Lees in a Kombi van along the Sturt Highway, north of Barrow Creek between Darwin and Alice Springs, when another car stopped alongside them and motioned to them to pull over. Murdoch then tried to kidnap Ms Lees, pulling her out of the van and binding her wrists with cable ties before forcing her in the back of his vehicle. While Murdoch went back to his vehicle, Ms Lees managed to escape and hid in the bushes for several hours before she flagged down another driver. Murdoch was found guilty of murder in December 2005, and was sentenced to life in jail with a non-parole period of 28 years. He maintained his innocence throughout the trial and tried to overturn the convictions on two occasions, but both were unsuccessful. In a statement released on Wednesday morning, NT Police said they remained committed to 'resolving this final piece of the investigation'. 'It is deeply regrettable that Murdoch has died without, as far as we are aware, ever disclosing the location of Peter Falconio's remains,' the statement said. 'His silence has denied the Falconio family the closure they have so long deserved. 'Our thoughts are with the Falconio family in the United Kingdom, whose grief continues. 'We continue to appeal to anyone who may have information that could lead us to Peter Falconio's remains to come forward, no matter how small the detail may seem.'

G Flip announces global Dream Ride Tour, returning to Australia and Perth next year

G Flip is set to return to Australia with a series of shows next year following the release of their most evolved and personal album yet. The Aussie drummer, singer, songwriter and producer will tour the country on a global Dream Ride Tour in support of the star's third studio album to be released on September 5. G, 31, will bring their explosive live show to fans in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide before wrapping up in Perth at the Fremantle Arts Centre on March 14. Joining the Melbourne-born-LA-based artist on the road is Canadian girl band The Beaches who went viral in 2023 with their single Blame Brett. The Toronto outfit now have a new single out called Touch Myself and a new album called No Hard Feelings set for release in August. Opening each Aussie show is rising star Ayesha Madon — known for playing Amerie in Netflix series Heartbreak High — who is taking the industry by storm from radio airwaves and streaming to magazine covers and Logie nominations. The tour comes after G Flip, born Georgia Flipo, refreshed their image — which included a hair transformation — and announced a bold evolution of their sound from indie pop to 1980s textures. The new record promises bigger feels but still stays rooted in G Flip's big pop hooks and confessional songwriting. G Flip was most recently in WA in November last year where they played at Spilt Milk House Party in Kings Park. In 2023, G told The West: 'I think Perth is one of the most beautiful places in Australia and every time I go over there it seems to be some kind of music or festival vibe.' 'The weather is beautiful and the vibes are high.' Tickets go on sale Monday, July 21 at 1pm via . Fans can sign up for early access to the Frontier Touring presale, which starts on Thursday at 12pm.
