Targeted killing? eThekwini Municipality employee gunned down in KwaZulu-Natal
A 51-year-old man believed to be an eThekwini Municipality employee was shot dead in a suspected targeted killing while driving to his residence in Mhlasini, KwaZulu-Natal, on Thursday evening. The incident unfolded shortly before 7pm, when the Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) Operations Centre received multiple calls for assistance after gunmen ambushed a blue Hyundai i10 at the corner of Hazelmere Drive and Quarry Road in Redcliffe. "Verulam police have opened a case of murder and two of attempted murder following the incident in which three people were allegedly attacked while in the vehicle. The motive for the killing is unknown," said police spokesperson, Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo.

Doctor survives Westville shooting en route to work
A Durban doctor survived after being shot multiple times while driving to work in Westville on Friday. Police are investigating a case of attempted murder. A doctor escaped with injuries after he was shot while travelling to work on Friday morning. The doctor, believed to be a gastroenterologist, came under fire while on his way to work in the Westville area. According to KZN police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo, a case of attempted murder has been opened. "This follows an incident in which a 65-year-old man was attacked by unknown men while on his way to work. "He was able to escape but suffered multiple gunshot wounds. The motive of the attack is unknown." In another shooting incident, a man was killed in Avoca, north of Durban, on Thursday. The victim had been exiting his driveway in his vehicle when gunmen travelling in a white Toyota Etios stopped and an armed suspect opened fire on him. The man died on the scene. Police said a hunt was underway for the suspects. IOL News

Watch: Body found at base of Drakensberg waterfall, murder probe launched
The recovery of a man's body from the Thonyelana River, at the base of a 40m waterfall in the Drakensberg, has resulted in a case of murder being opened. The Witness reports that on Wednesday morning, Pietermaritzburg Search and Rescue, Pietermaritzburg K9 Search and Rescue and Ladysmith K9 members were called out to assist the Upper Tugela police. The teams were tasked with the recovery of a body in the Drakensberg area below Cathedral Peak. According to a statement, due to the difficult and inaccessible terrain, arrangements were made by the uTugela District Office for assistance from the Pretoria Air Wing Unit. Members were airlifted to the area pointed out by the person who discovered a body in the Thonyelana River, at the base of a 40m waterfall. The witness said he suspected there was a second victim on a ledge, approximately 30m from the base of the waterfall. Rescue team members were hoisted onto the ledge and conducted a search, discovering clothing on the ledge, but no second victim was found. The body of a 39-year-old Lesotho national was recovered from the river, airlifted to the nearest accessible road and handed over to members of the Department of Health. Police spokesperson Contable Thenjiswa Ngcobo confirmed the rescue had taken place and that a murder investigation had been opened. 'The victim sustained multiple injuries [to his] body,' Ngcobo says. The motive for the killing is yet to be established.
