Honour killings a national problem requiring a separate law: Thirumavalavan
Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) leader Thol. Thirumavalavan on Monday said 'honour killings' was not just a State- level problem but a national one. Such killings were committed not only in Tamil Nadu but also in other States including in Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Maharastra, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh. Such killings should not be treated as an ordinary crime but one that required special attention by enacting a separate law at the national level by the ruling BJP-led government at the Centre, Mr. Thirumavalavan said leading a protest demonstration organised by the VCK at Perambalur. The demonstration was held to urge the State government and the Centre to enact a law to prevent honour killings. The VCK had been continuously emphasising the need for a special law to prevent honour killings for several years, he said citing several such crimes reported in various parts of Tamil Nadu. The VCK alone had been condemning such heinous crimes in Tamil Nadu by mobilising the people. 'The bigger parties and the newer ones in Tamil Nadu do not speak in cases of murder of Dalits. Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam leader and cine actor Vijay could not even condemn such killings. AIADMK leader and former Chief Edappadi K. Palaniswami who had been criticising the DMK government did not even meet the family members of the murdered Dalit victim Kavin in Tirunelveli,' he alleged. He claimed the VCK alone had the guts to fight against social injustice. He wondered as to why the AIADMK could not hold a state-wide demonstration on the issue of caste killings. 'Parties want the votes of Dalits but would not speak in support of them', he said. The Left parties had been protesting the cruelty and violence against the Dalits. Similar demonstrations were organised in Tiruchi City and Mayiladuthurai as well.

MGR enabled Brahminism in Dravidian politics: DMK ally party's leader fuels debate
A war of words erupted after Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) leader Thol Thirumavalavan made controversial remarks about former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK founder M G Ramachandran (MGR).Speaking at a memorial function for former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi in Chennai, Thirumavalavan alleged that MGR was responsible for allowing Brahminism to penetrate Dravidian claimed MGR had criticised former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, sowed the seeds of hate politics, and paved the way for a Brahmin woman to become the leader of a Dravidian party. 'Apart from all these criticisms, one good thing that happened due to MGR is that national parties were not allowed to stabilise here,' he AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS) hit back strongly, warning that Thirumavalavan had 'no standard' to speak about MGR.'Tamil Nadu people consider MGR as God. If he criticises such a person, he will vanish from politics,' EPS Thirumavalavan issued a clarification, saying his comments were not meant to insult MGR.'I spoke about MGR in the context of Tamil Nadu politics. I respect both MGR and Jayalalithaa and have openly appreciated her several times. I had no will to insult MGR,' he said, adding that his remarks referred to how 'hate politics spun around' Karunanidhi.- Ends IN THIS STORY#Tamil Nadu

VCK will determine Tamil Nadu's future in 2026, says Thol Thirumavalavan
Dharmapuri: VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan on Saturday night said 2026 would be the year of his party and that it would determine the future of TN. He said the VCK had endured all challenges in TN politics. "Today, we have four MLAs and two MPs, gaining political recognition." Pointing out that he celebrates his birthday every year with a specific theme, Thirumavalavan said, "This year, we are celebrating it under the theme of 'let's protect secularism'. I believe we have instilled fear in our adversaries through our principles. The call for protecting secularism should resonate everywhere." Explaining the reason for aligning with the DMK, Thirumavalavan said, "The weapon crafted by the revolutionary Ambedkar is secularism. Those opposing this are the BJP, RSS, Hindu Munnani and the AIADMK. Our alliance with the DMK, Congress and the Left is meant to uphold secularism and defend the Constitution. The DMK-led alliance is recognized as a secular alliance. When Kalaignar established it, Stalin had named it the Secular Progressive Alliance. Thol Thirumavalavan will disappear from politics if he criticises MGR: EPS
SALEM: general secretary on Saturday said VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan will disappear from the political landscape if he continues to criticise late Tamil Nadu chief minister M G Ramachandran (MGR). Tired of too many ads? go ad free now EPS was reacting to Thirumavalavan's remark at a function in Chennai on Friday that MGR had played a role in bringing Brahminism to the Dravidian movement. "MGR enabled a Brahmin woman ( ) to ascend to the leadership of the Dravidian movement," Thirumavalavan had stated. Palaniswami said Thirumavalavan lacked the credentials to discuss MGR. "MGR is revered as a god by the people of Tamil Nadu. Criticizing someone of that stature will lead to their political disappearance," he said responding to a question by reporters in Salem. EPS emphasized that it was unfeasible to engage in politics based solely on one caste. 'The AIADMK remains a party that transcends caste and religion. Our movement has numerous caste associations and individuals from various religions," he said. "Those who cannot accept this are expressing their anger and hatred through such remarks," he added. It may be noted that Thirumavalavan had also said in the same speech in Chennai that no national party could form a govt in the state after MGR floated a new party (AIADMK). 'More importantly, the BJP could not gain foothold in the state,' he had said.

DMK should ignore opposition to separate law against honour-based crimes from caste outfits: Thirumavalavan
Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi founder Thol. Thirumavalavan, on Wednesday, said the DMK government should ignore the opposition of the caste outfits in the issue of enacting a separate law against honour-based crimes and pave way for a 'democratic revolution'. Mr Thirumavalavan met with Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, along with CPI and CPI (M) state secretaries, R. Mutharasan and P. Shanmugam, on Wednesday. On the other hand, the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee observed a day's fast led by its SC wing leader, M.P. Ranjan Kumar, inside the Sathyamurthy Bhavan. Mr. Thirumavalavan pointed out the Hindu Marriage (Tamil Nadu Amendment) Act, 1967, which legalised self-respect marriages, and the implementation of Mandal Commission's recommendations, providing 27% to backward classes in government jobs and in education, also faced stiff opposition from upper castes and dominant castes. 'These were accepted by the larger society over time. The separate law is not a law in favour of scheduled castes. Honour-based crimes are national phenomena – such crimes are happening across communities and States and even within SCs and OBCs. Even recently, an OBC boy attacked another OBC boy for speaking to a girl from his own caste. It is a law against regressiveness and backwardness. CM Stalin should ignore the opposition of caste outfits as the democratic forces within these communities would welcome it,' he told The Hindu. He explained to Mr Stalin about the need for a separate law to tackle such crimes and give it a special focus just as we have separate laws for crimes against women, Scheduled Castes and so on. 'We have given him several references that reiterate why such a law is needed as recommended by National Commission of Women, Law Commission of India, Supreme Court's directives in Shakti Vahini vs Union Of India case and bills introduced as private member bills in Parliament and also a Bill introduced by CPI-M MLA A. Soundarrajan in 2015 in Tamil Nadu Assembly. Even Rajasthan has introduced a separate law against it. We take pride in calling Tamil Nadu a land of social justice and we talk about Dravidian model. He listened to us patiently. He didn't give us any assurance but we hope CM Stalin would enact a separate law. It is needed today,' he said.
