Thomas Carroll Celebrates Decade-Long Partnership with Tŷ Hafan

Two teams of employees will take on the Welsh Three Peaks challenge as the next big next fundraising event in June. Thomas Carroll, independent insurance, risk, wealth management and insurtech company, is celebrating a 10-year partnership with children's hospice charity Tŷ Hafan, raising £122,150.33 in vital funds since the relationship began. To mark this milestone, Thomas Carroll is the headline sponsor of Tŷ Hafan's Welsh Three Peaks Challenge 2025, taking place on Saturday, 7 June. This single-day adventure spans over 20 miles and involves a total ascent of 9,397 feet, conquering the three highest peaks in Wales – Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), Cadair Idris, and Pen y Fan, which will be a true test of endurance, team spirit, and determination. Two dedicated teams from Thomas Carroll will be taking on the challenge for a second year running, with additional colleagues providing vital on-the-ground support. The firm hopes to raise significant funds for Tŷ Hafan, which has been providing life-changing care and support to children with life-shortening conditions and their families across Wales since 1999. Natalie Sankala, Operations Director at Thomas Carroll, said: 'This challenge is another opportunity for us to step up and give back to a charity that means so much to us. 'This is more than just a hike. It's about pushing ourselves to support a cause that's close to our hearts. Every pound raised goes directly to Tŷ Hafan, helping them continue to provide comfort, care and precious moments to families who need it most. I have volunteered to part in this year's challenge, and look forward to not only raising money for Tŷ Hafan but to spend time with a lovely group of people, whilst taking in the amazing Welsh landscape'. Kelly Dibble, Corporate Fundraising Manager at Tŷ Hafan, said: 'When a child's life will be short, Tŷ Hafan will walk alongside their family every step of the way – through life, death and beyond. We were delighted when Thomas Carroll announced that they would support our flagship Welsh Three Peaks event by being the lead sponsor. 'Thomas Carroll's fantastic fundraising and long-term partnership has contributed hugely in our ambition to reach every family that needs us. The team are truly incredible, and we are extremely grateful to them for their ongoing support and enthusiasm. 'No parent ever imagines that their child's life will be short. Sadly, this is the reality facing thousands of families in Wales. We can't stop this happening, but together we can make sure that no one in Wales lives their child's short life alone.' Members of the public are also invited to join the challenge. Registration is £25 per team, with a fundraising target of £800. To show your support, you can donate to the Thomas Carroll teams on their JustGiving page .

Are you dreaming of a white Easter? When a snowstorm shut RI down on the holiday

The front page of The Providence Sunday Journal on March 29, 1970, told readers that the weather for the day would be fair and cooler. It was Easter Sunday, a holiday that traditionally signals the start of spring but can also deliver weather of all types. This year would bring a surprise. Fifty-five years later, it would also lead a What and Why RI reader to ask about the largest Easter snowfalls. The day after the storm, the front page of The Journal didn't have images of children hunting for Easter eggs or sunrise services. Instead, readers found Providence policemen and a lone truck traveling through a deserted city covered in white. "It's horrible. Whoever dreamed this storm up and picked this time is goofy," Susy Thomas told a Journal reporter as she arrived at T.F. Green Airport to return to Atlanta after spending the holiday in North Kingstown. According to the March 30, 1970, edition of The Journal, a nor'easter traveling up from Arkansas dropped 5 to 10 inches across the state. Its arrival caught everyone off guard, from the weather bureau to public works departments. The storm ended as the most significant 24-hour snowfall of the season, with 7.8 inches falling at the airport. The early-spring storm also resulted in what was essentially a perfect storm of unpreparedness. As many vehicles had already shedded their snow tires, major highways across the state were clogged with abandoned vehicles. Plows had also been removed from many trucks used by DPWs, requiring them to be reattached before the trucks could hit the streets. Reports indicated that plowing and sanding didn't start until 7 p.m., no plows had been seen on Interstate 95 by 8 p.m. and most highways were still considered impassable at 10 p.m. Fortunately, no serious crashes were reported. Additionally, the storm caused air and bus travel to be temporarily suspended that Sunday night, stranding travelers seeking to return home. One family found themselves stuck at the airport after flying in earlier in the day from Hartford, Connecticut, to enjoy a scenic excursion for the holiday. With their flight home canceled, they were hopeful for a bus to take them back to Connecticut, but then heard that it was stuck on I-95. "Not so hot," Thomas Carroll said of his chances of returning home before dawn. The 1970 storm proved to be the largest recorded on the holiday to date. Before that storm, the previous white Easter record was 6 inches on April 4, 1915. Spire establishes two-way optical link between satellites in orbit

Spire Global has established a two-way optical link between two satellites in orbit, marking a significant advancement in satellite communication technology. This milestone paves the way for faster, reliable and secure data transmissions for future space missions. The satellites, which were launched in June 2023, are equipped with Optical Inter-Satellite Link (OISL) payloads. These advanced systems use laser technology to transfer data between satellites almost instantaneously, even when they are up to 5,000 km apart. This innovation has the potential to transform applications such as weather forecasting, global communications, and remote sensing by enhancing data speeds, improving security and reducing transmission delays. John E. Ward, Senior Director of Research & Development at Spire, said: 'Precisely pointing two satellites, across distances equivalent of New York to London, and establishing an inter-satellite optical link is a significant milestone for Spire. This achievement places us among a select group of organizations capable of developing and deploying this advanced technology and overcoming the complexities of aligning satellites separated by thousands of kilometers in Low Earth Orbit. Integrating this technology into our future fleet will enhance resilience, improve security, and reduce latency for critical applications.' Thomas Carroll, Applied Optics Team Lead at Spire, added: 'We have shrunk what is typically a large optical system—the size of a microwave—down to the size of a tissue box. Our OISL payload is the smallest on the market, allowing us to deploy this technology on our small satellites while delivering performance previously achievable only with much larger systems. This breakthrough has the potential to enhance our data and Space Services solutions, especially for applications that require continuous coverage with fast and secure data relay.' The development of the OISL technology was supported by a European Space Agency (ESA) Advanced Research in Telecommunications Services (ARTES) Pioneer Partnership Project, within ESA’s Connectivity and Secure Communications directorate, with funding from the UK Space Agency (UKSA). Clive Edwards, ESA Pioneer Implementation Manager, stated: 'Through our ARTES Pioneer Partnership Project, we have supported Spire in the development of a new OISL capability for their space data service network. This OISL system is set to transform satellite communications, offering enhanced security and efficiency for space-based data transmission.' Following the successful demonstration, Spire will launch three additional LEMUR satellites with OISL technology in 2025, two of which are set to launch via Exolaunch on the Transporter-13 rideshare mission with SpaceX. During the mission, Spire will also launch four additional LEMUR satellites to replenish its fully deployed constellation and enable missions for its Space Services customers. The launch is scheduled for no earlier than March 2025.
