Arsenal in talks with Partey over new deal as Jorginho and Sterling depart

LONDON: Arsenal are in talks with Thomas Partey to extend the midfielder's contract, the club said Wednesday, while confirming the departure of a slew of other players including Jorginho and Raheem Sterling. Partey's contract is due to expire on June 30 and Arsenal said 'discussions are on-going.' The Ghana international has been with Arsenal since 2020. Italy midfielder Jorginho, Scotland left back Kieran Tierney, Brazilian goalkeeper Neto and Sterling — at one stage a key player for England — are among those confirmed to be leaving Arsenal. Sterling was only on a season-long loan from Chelsea. Arsenal have just finished second in the Premier League for the third straight season.

Arsenal issue Thomas Partey update as Jorginho and Kieran Tierney depart

Arsenal remain in discussions with Thomas Partey over a new contract but have confirmed the expected exits of Jorginho and Kieran Tierney. Partey's contract is set to expire on 30 June, and the defensive midfielder has been linked with Barcelona and Juventus. The news on Partey's future came in an update shared by the Premier League runners-up thanking the out-of-contract men's and women's players who will be leaving the club at the end of the month. Italy midfielder Jorginho, who is expected to join Brazilian outfit Flamengo, had already confirmed his exit in a farewell video posted to his Instagram last week, while Tierney is returning to former club Celtic. The Scotland left-back, who featured 144 times for Arsenal, told the club website: 'Just thank you for everything from day one. They supported us through the good times and the bad, and they supported me through some hard times as well. 'I think that's what I'm most grateful for, the times where it wasn't so good or so easy for me is when they probably supported me most, so I'm just very grateful and I feel very lucky to have the support from them. 'I feel so lucky that I've played for this club and the love that the supporters have given me has been amazing. I've loved every day here and I've learned so much, I've improved so much and I just feel very lucky.' The announcement also confirmed loanees Raheem Sterling and Neto would return to their respective parent clubs, Chelsea and Bournemouth. Sterling wrote on Instagram: 'Thank you for making my family feel welcome, Arsenal.' Forward Nathan Butler-Oyedeji, who earned a number of call-ups to Mikel Arteta's first-team squad, is among the departing academy players. The Gunners also announced they remain in negotiations with Chloe Kelly, who in January joined on loan from Manchester City – where her contract is set to expire – and was instrumental in helping Renee Slegers' side win the Champions League and finish runners-up in the Women's Super League. 'Discussions are ongoing, and once matters are finalised between all parties, we will communicate in due course,' Arsenal's statement read, in reference to the Partey and Kelly discussions. 'We thank all the players leaving us for their contributions to the club. 'You will always be part of the Arsenal family and we wish you all the best of health and happiness in your futures.' Lina Hurtig, Amanda Ilestedt and Teyah Goldie are also leaving Slegers' squad.

Partey, 31, sees his current deal expire on June 30 but boss Mikel Arteta wants to keep him. The midfielder is claimed to have held talks with La Liga giants Barcelona over a potential free transfer. Partey spent his formative years in Spain and joined Arsenal from Atletico Madrid for £45million in 2020. ‌ This season, the Ghanian played more games than ever for Arsenal. Partey made a total of 52 appearances, topping his previous best tally of 40. ‌ But his future remains uncertain, with Arsenal issuing an update when announcing their retained and released list on Wednesday. Partey is one of two men's team players whose current terms run out at the end of this month. A passage read: "The following players' contracts also expire on June 30, 2025. Discussions are ongoing, and once matters are finalised between all parties, we will communicate in due course: Chloe Kelly, Thomas Partey and Michal Rosiak." "The way he's played, performed, his availability, has been exceptional and he's a really important player for us." In April, Arteta was asked if there'd been any progress in contract talks with the 31-year-old. "Yes, there is progress with all the players," he replied. "I'll leave that to [sporting director] Andrea [Berta] and the club to decide and to talk about." Pushed on whether it's his intention to have Partey in his squad next season, Arteta continued: "The intention is very clear. I'll leave that to Andrea and the club to take a step forward." ‌ Aside from the Ghana international, Arsenal have confirmed the departure of first-team stars Kieran Tierney and Jorginho. Tierney, 27, is set to rejoin former club Celtic while 33-year-old Jorginho has been linked with a move to Flamengo. Loanee Raheem Sterling is confirmed to be returning to Chelsea. Neto will also return to Bounemouth after making just a single appearance. Arsenal's full retained and released list: Nathan Butler-Oyedeji, Reece Clairmont, Khayon Edwards, Jakai Fisher, Romari Forde, Teyah Goldie, Jimi Gower, Jack Henry-Francis, Lina Hurtig, Amanda Ilestedt, Jorginho, Max Kuczynski, Salah-Eddine Oulad M'Hand, Ismail Oulad M'Hand, Neto. Arsenal have confirmed the departure of four first-team stars and provided an update on Thomas Partey 's future in their retained list for 2025-26. There had been question marks over the future of Partey in north London - given that his current deal is set to expire at the end of the month. However, the club have now confirmed that talks are 'ongoing' with the 31-year-old Premier League star. On Wednesday afternoon, the club revealed which men's, women's and youth stars that they would be parting ways with but insisted Partey was among three players who were having deals negotiated. On the club website, they wrote: 'The following players' contracts also expire on June 30, 2025. They continued: 'Ahead of the official Premier League announcement of all men's players who will be out of contract on June 30, we are taking this opportunity to say thank you to those leaving us when their contracts are completed at the end of the month. 'This includes men's players and scholars who have represented the club at first-team, under-21, and under-18 levels, together with members of our women's squad, whose departures have been previously announced'. The full list included: 'Nathan Butler-Oyedeji, Reece Clairmont, Khayon Edwards, Jakai Fisher, Romari Forde, Teyah Goldie, Jimi Gower, Jack Henry-Francis, Lina Hurtig, Amanda Ilestedt, Jorginho, Max Kuczynski, Salah-Eddine Oulad M'Hand, Ismail Oulad M'Hand, Neto, Brian Okonkwo, Elian Quesada-Thorn, Zacariah Shuaib, Raheem Sterling, Kieran Tierney'. Despite Sterling's exit, his son has been signed by Arsenal 's academy to play for the club at under-9 level. In a post on social media, Sterling's partner Paige Milian revealed the couple's first-born son had joined the famous Hale End academy. 'Beyond proud of my first born son Thiago for signing with the Arsenal academy,' she wrote on Instagram. 'The growth, dedication, and hard work you've shown over the past year has been incredible to watch, you've earned this. 'This is just the beginning so keep your feet on the ground, stay humble, and keep grinding, the journey doesn't stop here. Let's go TT.' While his own journey at the club is just beginning, Thiago Sterling has already had the chance to rub shoulders with some of the academy's most famous alumni. In October he served as Bukayo Saka's mascot at the Emirates as Arsenal defeated PSG in a Champions League clash.
