Injury-plagued Mount's last England appearance was in the Qatar 2022 quarter-final defeat by France, with a series of problems dogging him since. 4 4 It meant Mount - who started the Euro 2020 final against Italy - was not even in the equation when Gareth Southgate selected his squad for Germany in 2024. But new England boss Tuchel was a huge fan of Mount during their days at Chelsea, which included him playing the crucial pass as the Blues shocked Manchester City to win the Champions League in 2021. And while Mount, 26, accepts he has to secure a place in Manchester United's side to put himself back into World Cup contention, the online conversation with his former club boss has made him start believing. Mount said: 'Thomas called me up. 'He called me and he said that he's calling a lot of players and just wanted to catch up. 'I don't know how many players he probably called, 40 or 50 maybe. Mount agreed that Tuchel's appointment as Southgate's successor had been a genuine boost for him after two years of toil and frustration. The Cobham product's hopes of making a mark at United after his £55m move went south with injuries restricting him to just 13 Prem starts in his first two seasons in red. But United boss Ruben Amorim has paid a number of glowing tributes, describing him as 'a player who does everything right - so he will always have the support of everyone at the club' and suggesting: 'Even five minutes of Mason Mount is perfect.' Now he has managers who will publicly rate him for both club and country - with Mount's personal relationship with the German a strong one. Mount added: 'I played quite a bit under him. Celebs at Wimbledon: Dave Grohl, Olivia Rodrigo headline A-listers in crowds
Dave Grohl led the A-list celebrities braving the rain on day three of Wimbledon. The Foo Fighters frontman, 56, looked the part in his glistening suit as he walked through the All England Club gates alongside wife Jordyn Blum. Last year, the rock star admitted to fathering a love-child with another woman as he was accused of having 'a 15-year affair with a porn goddess'. But he and wife Jordyn were all smiles as they made their way to Centre Court for the day's action. And it was case of music greats past and present in attendance as play on the outside courts was delayed by the bad weather. That is because Olivia Rodrigo was also invited to the tennis as a guest of the club, just three days after headlining the final night of Glastonbury, while Sir Cliff Richard was back once more. And there was plenty of stars from the sporting world, too. Current England manager Thomas Tuchel headed to SW19 for the first time since taking on the job from Sir Gareth Southgate - who was at Wimbledon on Monday. Another of Tuchel's Three Lions predecessors, Roy Hodgson, also headed to South-West London on Wednesday alongside wife Sheila. Graeme Le Saux earned 36 England caps - plus a fair few more in Soccer Aid. He also boasts membership at the All England Club and proudly wore his badge upon arrival this morning. Diver Tom Daley — used to the water — proved he is just as capable at turning out a fashionable number as he is at twisting and turning into the pool. Golfer Tommy Fleetwood opted for a shimmering grey suit and tie paired with grey loafers. Actor Dominic Cooper defied his 47 years by dazzling in a brilliant sky-blue suit. And wrestler John Cena could be seen after all as he arrived with wife Shay Shariatzadeh. Despite the wet weather in Wimbledon, the celebs can expect another bumper day from their seats in the Royal Box on Centre Court. The day's order of play started with world No1 Aryna Sabalenka vs Marie Bouzkova followed by Brit student Ollie Tarvet against defending champion Carlos Alcaraz. And the third match on Centre saw two Grand Slam champions pitted against each other in round two as 2021 US Open queen Emma Raducanu faced 2023 Wimbledon winner Marketa Vondrousova. The Sun BECKHAM, BLANCHETT, REBEL WILSON LEAD STARS AT WIMBLEDON ON DAY ONE David Beckham made a mad 4,000-mile dash back from the Club World Cup to join the celebrities on the first day of Wimbledon. The former England captain watched his Inter Miami side get dumped out of the tournament by his former employers PSG on Sunday night. The 4-0 victory for PSG kicked off at 5pm local time at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia – or 10pm UK time. But despite the match finishing just 13-and-a-half hours before play got underway on Centre Court, Beckham hot-footed it across the Atlantic to be joined by his mum Sandra. And he even posed for a selfie 12 hours after full-time in Atlanta with Wimbledon 2004 champion Maria Sharapova, who was one of the first big-name arrivals. The Russian has been a regular at the All England Club since her retirement and once again made the most of her membership to watch the tennis. So before things got underway on the court, Sharapova and a suited-and-booted Beckham posed for a brilliant selfie for their combined 92million followers. Sharapova – decked out in a denim skirt and navy polo in the record-breaking sweltering heat – wrote: 'Let the (Wimbledon) games begin.' It has been a busy few days for Becks – set to get a knighthood – who underwent secret surgery on his wrist. He wore a sling and had heavy strapping on the joint at the Club World Cup last night. But he had no sling when he took his seat in the Royal Box for the start of Carlos Alcaraz vs Fabio Fognini – but had swapped his dark suit for a cream one. Beckham sat next to former England boss Sir Gareth Southgate – fresh from his knighthood – was also among the VIPs taking in the Day One action. And it was not just footballers in the house. Former cricket star Stuart Broad was in attendance with partner and ex-The Saturdays singer Mollie King. Actors Eddie Redmayne and Jason Isaacs plus singers Cliff Richard and Ronan Keating were in the Royal Box, too. Sam Thompson of Made In Chelsea and I'm A Celebrity fame also made the short journey from West London to South-West London. Oliver Proudlock and Emma Louise Connolly, Laura Whitmore, Isla Fisher and Rochelle and Marvin Humes were also among first-day attendees. – The Sun Read related topics: Wimbledon Tennis Nick Kyrgios has slammed a move from Jannik Sinner to reunite with the fitness coach he sacked in 2024 after it was revealed that the Italian had tested positive for doping. Why Lionesses' Euro's victory will help end England men's trophy quest: Gareth Southgate's sports psychologist reveals key to women's success - and has a brutal message for their critics
England's men's football team could learn lessons from the Lionesses if they are to win their first major trophy since 1966 next year, Sir Gareth Southgate 's favourite sports psychologist told MailOnline today. Michael Caulfield, a long-time friend and confidante of the former England manager, believes the women's triumph could be a 'turning point' for Thomas Tuchel 's men. He also believes that the Three Lions' German manager and the FA should also take note of the Lionesses' 'joy' at representing their country. 'If the men's team triumph [next summer], I genuinely believe the Lionesses dramatic win in Basel will prove to be a huge turning point, as they have a won a tournament away from home, and everyone in the men's set up will subconsciously note that too. This win was so important for both teams', Mr Caulfield told MailOnline. He added: 'I hope everyone at the FA realises that the more you allow people to be themselves, be likeable, be proud of who you are and what you stand for, then people come with you'. Mr Caulfield also has a strong message for 'cynical' critics of the victorious women. 'We should simply be saying 'thank you' and joining in the celebrations. If you don't like women's football, or seeing women triumph, inspiring countless young girls to take up football... then don't watch it, or comment on it, you won't be missed, but you might be missing out', he said. The Prime Minister's official spokesman has said this afternoon that the men's football team 'should absolutely take a lesson' from the Lionesses on how to win tournaments. He added: 'Yes, it can't be as fast and as furious as the men's game, in the same way that the Kenyan female athlete, Faith Kipyegon, couldn't break the four minute mile recently, but that does not stop last night's triumph from being joyous'. It came as Beth Mead's father Richard had a message for critics, tweeting today: 'To all the snipers out there criticising women's football, guess what my daughter is a double European champion, how many people can say that, well done lionesses'. Mr Caulfield, who works for Brentford in the Premier League, is one of the country's top sports psychologists with over 30 years experience. He was first employed by Southgate when he was manager at Middlesbrough in 2006 and they have remained close. Millions celebrated as the Lionesses won back-to-back European Championships, with a women's World Cup final in between. The men have gone close to winning both those titles in recent years but never made the final step. Mr Caulfield said: 'What can the Three Lions learn from The Lionesses? Well, Sir Gareth Southgate started it, I hope everyone at the FA realises, that the more you allow people to be themselves, be likeable, be proud of who you are and what you stand for, then people come with you, and for those who simply want to moan, well, you can never win an argument with a cynic, so don't try'. The team are flying into Britain this afternoon ahead of a reception at Downing Street hosted by Angela Rayner with PM Sir Keir Starmer in Scotland meeting Donald Trump. Despite the success of the Lionesses, some continue to compare the men's and women's games unfavourably. Mr Caulfield says he 'cannot understand' it. 'Comparison is the thief of all joy and never has that lovely old phrase been more apt following the joyous and determined triumph by the most admirable and likeable of teams, The Lionesses. 'The whole evening and tournament were joyous, the drama was joyous, Chloe Kelly was joyous, the backstories are joyous, the never say die attitude was joyous, the commentaries were joyous, the reaction is joyous, and they haven't even made it to Buckingham Palace yet. 'For the life of me, I cannot understand the need or point of comparing the Lionesses to The Three Lions, and if you don't like women's football, or seeing women triumph, inspiring countless young girls to take up football, therefore taking exercise, getting off their phones, being part of a club, team, community and improving every aspect of their life, then don't watch it, or comment on it, you won't be missed, but you might be missing out'. He added that the Lionesses are 'uniting people from all walks of life in the process, and giving us all a break for the daily worries we all face in our own lives. We should simply be saying 'thank you' and joining in the celebrations'.
