Luca Manghi, David Kelly and Steven Logan will tour as a trio with a new spiritual take on anatomy. Photo / Thomas Hamill 'I've had this idea,'' Steven Logan says, recalling a conversation with composer Claire Scholes. ''I really want to write you a xylophone arrangement of Dem Bones.'' Scholes's music is frequently playful – see, for example her Drag Concerto, which premiered last year with trumpeter Nick Hall dressed as his alter ego, Anita Wigl'it. Scholes's new arrangement of the old spiritual contains some theatricality, too. 'I get to shout and whoop and it's so much fun,' Logan says. Dem Bones is among the pieces Logan is taking on a brief northern tour with flautist Luca Manghi and pianist David Kelly. Orchestral concertgoers will know Logan as principal timpanist for the Auckland Philharmonia (Manghi is associate principal flute). However, as well as playing the full gamut of percussion – and other – instruments, he acts and sings, and he and a few of his orchestral colleagues have an R&B band, which may or may not reflect a childhood growing up in the US southeast: Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky. He didn't grow up in New Jersey but he loves Bruce Springsteen, and has a tattoo of the piano part to The Boss's Thunder Road to prove it. There is no Springsteen on the tour the trio are calling Masterworks for Marimba, Flute, & Piano, but people can expect other musical greats, including Fauré, Bernstein and Mozart, none of whom were noted for their marimba, flute and piano music. '[Mozart's] Fantasia [k.608] was written for organ, and we arranged it to work for the three of us,' Logan says. 'I opened it up in [composition software] Sibelius and I was like, this makes sense. That's obviously a flute line and this is obviously a piano line. That's obviously a marimba line. So, we are playing the notes as they are, but we found cool ways to use our combination of colours to rearrange the piece.' There's a selection of works by local composers, too, this time written to glove-fit the ensemble. Logan is especially excited by Cloud Piercer, a marimba solo written for him by Hannah Kagawa. A student at the University of Canterbury, Kagawa has been learning percussion with Justin DeHart, and is a young composer to keep an eye on. 'Yesterday, I was practising it and I'd got to the point where, okay, I've done the work I need to do. But then for another 45 minutes I kept playing the piece, just because it's beautiful.' The cloud piercer of the title is Aoraki Mt Cook. 'It feels like a love letter to the landscape,' says Logan, who recently became a New Zealand citizen. 'What's more Kiwi than having a Kiwi composer write about the landscape?' Masterworks for Marimba, Flute, & Piano, Christ Church Parish Hall, Russell, Aug 20; St Heliers Church & Community Hall, Auckland, Aug 31; Gallagher Academy Concert Chamber, Hamilton, Sept 10.

Music fans pick 'greatest song ever made' and there's only one winner
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Music lovers from around the globe have united to discuss what they consider to be the greatest song of all time. With countless tracks to select from, a viral post has prompted many to regard a particular rock and roll number as the pinnacle of musical achievement. Legendary classics were cast aside in favour of one specific track that has captured people's attention. And after much deliberation, thousands of music fans declared one anthem by Bruce Springsteen as the "best song ever." The initial X post, by New York-based music writer Jules Zucker, had proposed the Scissor Sisters' 2006 hit I Don't Feel Like Dancin' – which was partly written by Sir Elton John – as the best track ever released. However, this was swiftly dismissed in favour of a track from The Boss's acclaimed album, Born To Run. While Springsteen's compilation boasts numerous masterpieces, fans believe Thunder Road stands not only as the finest from his 1975 release, but as the greatest in musical history. Jules' post said: "Enough about the worst songs ever. Let's talk about the best song ever. For instance, I Don't Feel Like Dancin' by Scissor Sisters." In response, Springsteen superfan Alexis opened the floodgates when she wrote: "Thunder Road has entered the conversation." Music lovers rushed into to deliver their assessment of the song before calling it the ultimate song of all time. One user responded: "This gives me chills because I remember the shows when he performed this and it takes me right back there. Unless you were there, it's hard to understand how good his concerts were." Another agreed, adding: "All things considered this has to be the singularly best Springsteen song but there are certainly arguments that can be made for Jungleland, Born To Run, Badlands, The River, The Promised Land or maybe even Rosalia." A third concurred, writing: "No doubt." However, not everyone was in agreement despite regarding Thunder Road as an all-time classic. One simply fumed: "Oh please..." Meanwhile, another joked: "Not even the best Bruce song with 'Thunder' in the name." A third added: "It's up there, but for me there's better in his catalogue." (Image: Kevin Mazur/WireImage via Getty Images) Some were even proposing alternative tracks, with one citing Bob Dylan's Tangled Up In Blue as the greatest song ever made. Another user asked: "What do you know about The Weight by [Canadian rockers] The Band?" A further suggestion for the greatest song ever made was Fleetwood Mac's The Chain. The song will resonate particularly with motor racing fans of a certain age as its distinctive riff was used as the BBC's theme tune for its Formula 1 coverage between 1978 and 1996, and again between 2009 and 2015. They wrote: "The thing about listening to music is you keep thinking 'maybe one day I'll find a song better than The Chain' but you never find any songs better than The Chain." There was a broad range of other artists put forward by the public, including Lou Reed, The Beatles and Black Country, New Road. Meanwhile, another viral tweet put forward The Beach Boys' God Only Knows as the greatest song of all time – two months after their founding member Brian Wilson died, aged 82. What do you consider to be the greatest song ever made? Let us know in the comments below.

No injuries reported following home fire in Gloucester: Paramedics
An Ottawa Fire Services investigation vehicle at the scene of a fire. (CTV News Ottawa) The Ottawa Paramedic Service says no injuries were reported following a single-family home fire in the neighbourhood of Gloucester in the early hours of Sunday morning. Ottawa Fire Services says firefighters received a call shortly after 2:20 a.m. reporting smoke coming out from the windows of a home in the 4,000 block of Thunder Road. When crews arrived at the scene and saw smoke on all four sides, they asked for additional resources to be dispatched to the scene. They then started extinguishing the fire by initiating a fast attack by advancing a hose line inside the structure. Crews used a water shuttle system to bring water to the scene as there were no hydrants in the area. Firefighters say dangerous conditions forced them to evacuate out of the structure at 2:20 a.m. The fire was declared under control shortly after 3:30 a.m. Firefighters then searched the home for occupants and no one was found inside. Victim Services was called to help the affected residents. A fire truck remains at the scene to monitor for any flareups. The investigation into what led to this fire is ongoing.

Trump hits back at Springsteen: ‘Never liked his music'
President Trump says he isn't bothered if rocker Bruce Springsteen isn't a fan of his, because he was never a fan of 'The Boss,' either. 'Never liked him, never liked his music, or his Radical Left Politics and, importantly, he's not a talented guy — Just a pushy, obnoxious JERK, who fervently supported Crooked Joe Biden, a mentally incompetent FOOL, and our WORST EVER President, who came close to destroying our Country,' Trump wrote in a Truth Social post Friday, after Springsteen criticized Trump during a stop on his tour in Manchester, England, earlier this week. Springsteen, who supported former Vice President Kamala Harris in her bid against Trump last year, including performing at a Georgia campaign rally for Harris in the fall, told the crowd the U.S. is 'currently in the hands of a corrupt, incompetent and treasonous administration.' 'There's some very weird, strange and dangerous s‑‑‑ going on out there right now,' the 'Thunder Road' singer said, ripping the White House for its handling of foreign policy, immigration and free speech, among other issues. He also blasted lawmakers for failing to 'protect the American people from the abuses of an unfit president and a rogue government.' But Trump dismissed the rock legend's concerns and struck back. 'This dried out 'prune' of a rocker (his skin is all atrophied!) ought to KEEP HIS MOUTH SHUT until he gets back into the Country, that's just 'standard fare,'' Trump wrote. 'Then we'll all see how it goes for him!' Fox News host Greg Gutfeld, an ardent supporter of Trump, also tore into Springsteen during Thursday's episode of 'The Five,' calling the musician, who is an Emmy Award away from EGOT status, a derogatory slur that got a different Fox News contributor suspended for using on air a decade ago. In a separate Truth Social post Friday, Trump, who is traveling back to the U.S. from a diplomatic trip to the Middle East, also mocked pop superstar Taylor Swift, another Harris supporter. 'Has anyone noticed that, since I said, 'I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT,' she's no longer 'HOT?' the president mused, referring to a post he wrote days after the singer-songwriter endorsed Harris and urged her fans to register to vote. Swift wrapped up her record-setting 'Eras Tour' in December. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
